Pupil and parent learning sheetWeek beginning: 4th May 2020
This week's work for Year 5 Maths involves rounding and ordering decimals. It then moves on to investigating percentages and looking at the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages (FDP).
By the end of the week you should be able to:
1. Round decimals2. Order and compare decimals3. Understand percentages4. Understand percentages as fractions and decimals5. Bank Holiday, so no lesson today!
All the information and links to the resources you need are in this presentation (you do not need to print anything off).
There are four lessons for this week, so you can do a different lesson each day. Do not worry if you don’t finish everything –all that matters is that you try your best. All of the White Rose resources have the answers on the website, so you can use these to check how you have done. If some of the work is too tricky, we have also included some BBC Bitesize and Mathswatch activities to complete for each day instead, alongside x-table practice on TT Rockstars.
Remember, if you have any questions you can contact us at [email protected] and we will reply to you as quickly as we can.Enjoy!

Once you understand the video, have a go at the activity. To do this, click the link here. You can write the answers in your books
When you’ve done as much as you can, check the answers by clicking here.If you are finding it difficult there is an example on the next page
If you are finding it difficult, let's look at an example
Let's see which whole number 7.7 is closest to.
First, let's place it on the number line
7.7 is 0.3 away from 8 and it is 0.7 away from 7.So it must round to 8.
7.7
7.7 rounded to nearest whole number is 8
0.7 0.3
This place value chart might help you with some of the questions if you’re unsure
If you found these tricky or couldn’t access them or have finished and want something else to do…that’s fine! Please have a go at these:

Putting a zero at the end of a decimal doesn’t change the value, but it can make it easier to comparee.g. 0.4 is the same as 0.400.3 is the same as 0.30

Maths lesson 5
Today is a Bank Holiday celebrating the 75th anniversary of VE Day, so there is no Maths lesson today!
VE Day - or 'Victory in Europe Day' - marks the day towards the end of World War Two (WW2) when fighting against Nazi Germany in Europe came to an end.On 8 May 1945, Prime Minister Winston Churchill made an announcement on the radio at 3pm that the war in Europe had come to an end, following Germany's surrender the day before. As you can imagine, people in Britain were very happy about this and held huge celebrations!
