GENERAL PROTECTION & COVERAGE PRINCIPLES

1 . On snap, first block your responsibility then cover after the ball is punted.

2. Discipline in your blocking technique is vital ... man or zone.

3. Maintain your poise vs. teams that move around a lot or employ short

. jerky type movements in attempt to draw you offsides.

4. You must respond instinctively to the personal protectors calls ..... knowand understand them .

.

5. Never follow a teammate downfield when covering. Fan to the openlane and maintain 5 yard horizontal spacing from adjacent man. Run thruyour p r o p ~ r landmark.

6. Maintain outside-in leverage on the ball .... keep the ball on your insideshoulder.

7. FORCERS ... don't let ball carrier split you or bounce outside of you;CONTAIN .... you are the widest men on the field; smell out reverses andgadgets;

8. Place your helmet on the ball .... especially the 2nd and 3rd tacklers ....create turnovers

9. Avoid contact with the return man if he signals for a fair catch. Forcers, sprint past return man (1 st) turn back to goal line inside the 10 yard line. The 2nd forcer face-up and everyone keep coming .... anticipate a muffedball.

10. Stay with the ball to properly DOWN IT .... Never touch it and walk away ..

stay with the ball until the whistle blows.

11. Forcers can catch a punted ball (inside the 10 yard line) if the return manis not in position to field the punt.

12. Covering punts is hustle and desire to make the hit .... BE a 100%'er.

13. "PETER .... PETER" .... poor punt; locate the ball and avoid illegaltouching; let the ball roll towards opponents goal line.

14. Personal Protector .... yell direction, and if necessary, type of Punt toyour coverage team.

15. Communication and Technique are the two necessary ingredients inperfect punt protection.

16. When covering punts vs. a fair catch signal speed up .... do not becomecomplacent .... good things can happen to us vs. a fair catch signal.

PUNT COVERAGE LANES •

Discipline in proper lane distribution is vital to our success in punt coverage.

Each memberof

the coverage team will have an assigned landmark on the fieldto run thru. Our coverage philosophy is to first run thru your landmark and thenconverge on the ball.

1. Know and understand punt protection and coverage principles(previously stated).

2. Run thru your landmark ... converge on the ball carrier by running thruthe near leg of the returner.

3. CAN NOT over run the bali carrier.

4. Gang tackle ... 2nd and 3rd tacklers go for the ball.

5. Directional Calls ... "RED" = Right'White" = Middle"Blue" = Left

6. FORCERS ........... Our ends will be our forcers and therefore, will haveno lane responsibility; go directly to the ball. Don'tallow the ball to split you or bounce outside of you.Attack from outside-in. Make tackle thru near leg of

the returner.

7. LANE .. ...... .......... Interior men will have lane responsibility; know andapply coverage principles (previously state); specificlane landmarks are to follow.

8. CONTAIN........... The upbacks will generally have contain

9 . SAFETY ..... .. .... .

responsibilities although we have the flexibility tochange-up; contai(l men are the widest menhorizontally on the football field; don't allow an

opponent outside of you and squeeze in on thecoverage; always alert for kickout blocks, reverses,

and gadgets. '

The punter will have the safety responsibility.Move smartly downfield at a pace so that you canmake the tackle as the carrier pops thru an opening ,never in the open field. Keep you r head on a swiveland look for crack blocks .

TAKING A SAFETY

There may be a situation in a game when a deliberate safety may work to ouradvantage. This decision will come from the bench or, situation dictates, during

a mishandled snap.

1. Must avoid the catastrophe .. .. Le., fumble in the end zone; blocked

punt forT.D.

2. CALL IS 'TAKE A SAFETY - NO PUNT' (Automatic tight formation)

3.

Block solid and don't cover.

PUNTER: A) Heels inside the end line but no deeper than

..

15 yards from the center.B) Totally concentrate on catching the ball. ....

watch it all the way.

C) Tightly secure the ball into your arms.D) Smartly move to far corner of endzone ....

waste as much time as possible .... step out of

bounds.E) If the ball is dropped, fall on it. DO NOT attempt

to pick it up and run with it.

F) Vs. a wild type snap ... let it go; do not attempt tosave the ball.

G) Incorporate Tight Punt Formation.H) RED: Ruri to right corner ... BLUE: Run to Left

Corner.

TIGHT PUNT

Situations may arise when we want our forcers to align tight in order to maximizeour protection. We will incorporate a Tight Punt Formation when our Punter isaligned in our endzone, vs. an eleven man rush (Victory Punt) and when taking aSafety.

Page 13: Punt Team Tampa

off the ball as possible and yet maintain a legal formation.5. FORCERS may have to incorporate double bump blocking technique

vs. an inside and outside rusher.
