What are the different types of
punctuation?
PunctuationThere are many different types of punctuation which assists us with our writing, we are going to look at six common types, can you
think what they are?
A Capital LetterA capital letter is used for:
•The beginning of a sentence,•The name of a person or
place,•The letter I in written
speech.
A Full Stop•A full stop is used at the
end of a sentence to show the sentence has finished. It also allows a person to take a breath before continuing with the text.
A CommaCommas are used when:•A reader should take a
pause,•To separate a list of things for example: bread, butter,
apples.
An ApostropheAn apostrophe can be used in two
ways:• To show something belongs to someone for example ‘The girl’s
shoe.’• To show two words which have joined
together but have some letters missing e.g. ‘they are= they’re.’
An Exclamation Mark
•An exclamation mark is used to show a command ‘STOP!’ and to show surprise ‘Goodness gracious me!’
A Question Mark• A question mark is used to
show a person is asking a direct question. For example, “Are you going home at 3:15 today?”
