Pumpherston Golf Club is situated in the village of Pumpherston on the

outskirts of Livingston in West Lothian.

Founded in 1895, it was originally a nine-hole layout, but was extended to 18 holes in 2002 with the project receiving worldwide acclaim for creating a truly ‘green’ golf course.

The new course designed by Graeme Webster quickly became recognised as one the best in the region. It contains numerous water features throughout the 6,000-yard par-70 layout and the greens are constructed to USGA standard.

Our course offers a true test for golfers of all abilities and we are within easy reach of both Glasgow and Edinburgh airports and the major motorway networks in Scotland.

Play an invigorating round of golf and relax with a refreshing drink and a bite to eat in our spacious and modern clubhouse with views out over the Pentland Hills.

We offer several practice areas including driving range, short game improvement area, practice bunkers and a large USGA-spec putting green to sharpen your game prior to playing. To make your day more enjoyable, we also offer buggy and trolley hire.

Founded in 1895, golf at Pumpherston was originally played

over nine holes in an area named Harrysmuir.

In 1908, James Caldwell officially opened a new nine holes where the club remained for over 20 years. The club joined the Linlithgowshire Golf Association during this spell, where it has remained a strong competitive member ever since.

In 1931 the club made another move where this time it would stay for over 70 years, forming a formidable reputation for delivering quality golfers whilst being an incredibly sociable club.

2002 was the completion of an incredible transformation. With the assistance of BP and the Sportscotland Lottery Fund, the Pumpherston Oilworks were replaced with a stunning new 18-hole golf course, practice facility and spacious clubhouse.

The innovative technology employed in transforming the oilworks site into an 18-hole course has received numerous environmental awards including the National Environmental Excellence Award and the pan-European Committed to Green standard.

As it now stands, the course is a wonderful 6,000-yard par-70 layout and boasts many holes which have doglegs, water hazards and panoramic views over the Almond Valley towards the Pentland Hills. The current course record sits at 63, which was achieved by Paul Drake in June 2012.

“you’ve got to hit it pretty straight, it’s not a wide open golf course,” richard says. “There’s lots of shapely holes – there are very few straight ones – so for the better player, being able to shape your shots is an advantage.

“For the higher handicapper or novice player, being able to keep the ball in play –

shorter but straighter – is an advantage. We have many water features, we’ve got a little bit of rough and it is primarily tree-lined.

“If you are a long hitter, then a driver is not often required.

“It’s easy walking, shapely, panoramic and challenging. There’s an array of different challenges from tight tee shots to tough greens surrounded by water.

“The greens are built to USGA specifications, and are generally firm and flat, there are some undulations but nothing too extreme.

They are usually protected by greenside bunkers or water hazards, so accurate approach play is important to keeping a good score.

“yes it’s a challenge, but it’s a challenge that you will enjoy and one that is definitely fair.”

Hole 2 - Pomferstoun, 414 yards, par 4

This wonderful golf hole is lined with trees and boasts fairway bunkers, greenside bunkers and a daunting water hazard. It provides a real test for all levels of golfer and a par 4 - or even a bogey 5 - is a fantastic result.An accurate tee shot of 210 yards leaves a similar length second shot, which must avoid a

watery hazard short left and a sandy trap on the right. The green sheds balls off to the left and has a generous slope from back to front. Good and bad golfing memories are created here every time you tee off and play hole number 2; Pomferstoun. Even taking more shots than you would care to here will only leave you wanting to come back for more and determined to better your score next time round.

Hole - 13 The Saughs, 143 yards, par 3

“Willows which by water stand, Ease us to the Summerland.”

Hole 13’s name comes from the beautiful mature willow trees, which used to tower behind the green. The trees have fallen foul to recent storms, however their name lives on and the beauty of the little par 3 remains timeless. New willows have been planted and future

generations will once again enjoy a splendid backdrop to this little beauty.

This wee gem of a hole may only play 143 yards, however the green sits on an angle and is guarded by some greenside bunkers, a small pond and a meandering stream. The surrounding woodlands shelter and encourage the wind to swirl around, making the tee shot harder than it should be.

Hole 16 - The Cooler, 255 yards, par 4

“Does fortune favour the golfing brave, or end in a splash and a watery grave?”

The 16th hole is truly a memorable golf hole. At only 250 yards, this par 4 is a tantalising birdie opportunity. most visitors are lured in by the first glance, but look a little closer and you’ll soon have second thoughts.

The green mushrooms out into a natural pond with the entrance only eight yards wide. Whilst the approach shot is generally a short distance, the narrow entrance and large expanse of water all add to the excitement and almost always change the dynamics of the golf shot.

Hole 16 also provides a wonderful opportunity to see some of our glorious wildlife. See our wildlife page later in this brochure for more details about our feathery friends.


The 16th is a wonderful drivable par 4 with the green surrounded by water. Drive it if you dare.

The PGA Professional at Pumpherston Golf Club is richard

Fyvie, who joined the club in 2002 when it opened as an 18-hole course. He was formerly the golf professional at Swanston Golf Club in Edinburgh.

richard is keen to pass his golfing knowledge on to others and has been at the forefront of the national coaching initiative, Clubgolf, from delivering an initial pilot project through to becoming a lead coach and tutor.

As part of the PGA and Clubgolf team richard has ensured children are now experiencing the game of golf and has personally delivered an award-winning campaign at Kirkwall Golf Club.

He also coaches the Dundas Parks Junior Golf Team and for three years has been a county coach for the Lothians’ Golf Association.

When he is not giving lessons, richard can be found along with the rest of his team in the Professional Shop, which caters for all your golfing needs.

richard is a TGI Partner and has accounts with all major brands including Titleist, Taylormade, Callaway and Ping. As a TGI member he has an extensive network of professionals and companies from which to source the latest products and these can usually be seen in the Pro Shop throughout the season.

Richard Fyvie is our PGA Professional and his coaching methods

have helped improve the games of golfers at Pumpherston, The Lothians and beyond. His understanding of clients’ needs and straightforward methods used to engage enjoyment; understanding and learning have ensured richard’s coaching is a sought-after commodity.

During his time at Pumpherston he has been asked to deliver coaching modules for a PGA Pilot scheme “introducing adults to the game of golf.”

Whether you are a talented player who needs a quick swing fix before a competition, an inconsistent player in search of a more repeatable technique or a beginner wanting to learn some sound fundamentals, the Professional and his team are here to help seven days a week.

Numerous lesson options and packages are available to suit you game and your budget. Lessons generally last 40 minutes, with discounts applicable if a block of lessons are pre-booked.

Any part of your golf game can be worked on and improved and video analysis can be provided. This can help you visualise more easily the moves needed to achieve a successful golf swing.

TUITION


We have wonderful practice facilities all located next to the

clubhouse. At 280 yards, the range is suitable to practice most clubs in the bag and boasts many different targets and greens. These are measured which offers you the chance to make your practice session as realistic as you want it to be. members bring their own balls and can play from artificial mats or from the turf.

richard Fyvie provides individual and group clinics here and the facility has been used by Clubgolf as a pilot scheme for the now successful national junior program.

The smart golfer knows that working on perfecting shots from 100 yards in is the quickest way to lower one’s handicap. The short game area has a green built to USGA specifications, several targets and two bunkers.

We also boast a large USGA-spec practice putting green, which is situated next to the clubhouse and first tee.

PrACTICE FACILITIES


Pumpherston is renowned as a friendly club with a wide and

varied membership. There are many established groups ready to welcome you who play on a regular basis throughout the week and weekends so you will never be short of having someone to play with.

Our men’s, ladies, seniors and junior sections offer a full competition fixtures schedule aimed at players of all standards. We also run several friendly events and a varied social calendar.

We have many different membership categories, designed to optimise your availability and use of the club, including full membership, which allows for unlimited golf subject to course availability, and five-day membership for those who wish to play off-peak.

To become a member you will be required to complete an application form. These are available from the Club Office or Professional Shop.

Members at Pumpherston enjoy a full program of golfing events

throughout the year. We host a large number of club competitions and also participate in team events on a local and national scale.

The club has a strong men’s section and has regular winners in tournaments run by the Lothians and Linlithgowshire Golf Associations respectively.

We have a hectic internal schedule, which sees a gents’ and ladies’ competition take place most weekends. This creates a busy and vibrant atmosphere both on the course and in the clubhouse at weekends. Tales of woe and moments of joy can often be heard in the bar whilst enjoying post match refreshments!

We host a pairs competition and two singles competitions throughout the year and many of the weekend competitions count towards the Club Order of merit.

The club’s competitive edge has a positive impact on our reputation as we have multiple winners flying the flag well beyond our boundaries.

Successful Pumpherston golfers include Paul Drake, who holds our course record with a superb 63. Paul played Open Qualifying with 2005 US Open winner michael Campbell and won the Lothians Amateur Golf Championship in 2012.

He has also played with USPGA champion and Pumpherston Life member, Steve Elkington.

‘Elk’ pops into Pumpherston for a game or social visit whenever he can, generally when the Open Championship brings his schedule to Scotland. He has a great affiliation with the club and its members and this was highlighted during his last visit when he laid on a wonderful clinic for our Junior members.

Our Ladies section has grown from strength to strength over the last 10 years, and they have a vibrant section, which plays competitive medals and competitions. The Ladies also run nine-hole fun events, which are generally followed with a wee glass of something enjoyable. recent years have seen the section embark on away trips with some wonderful times being had both on and off the course.

We are pleased that many of our staff and colleagues play regularly and always enjoy the course, clubhouse and hospitality.

JUNIOrS

Our junior section has been hugely successful in recent times and the

club takes great pride in its crop of talented young golfers.

Pumpherston has traditionally been blessed with a strong junior membership and over the years has carried out a great deal of work to welcome more boys and girls into the club. In recognition of these efforts, the club was awarded the Scottish Golf Union’s Junior Charter – an accolade given to the most “junior friendly” golf clubs in Scotland.

The designers of our new course incorporated the needs of junior members from the outset, creating a junior lounge within the new clubhouse and developing a junior practice area complete with pitching and bunker facilities and a putting green.

This junior-friendly philosophy has continued, and the number of junior members have continued to grow. The emphasis at Pumpherston is based on games for learning, with particular emphasis on having fun. It is all about skill acquisition through being set challenges, rather than merely being taught what to do.

Juniors are separated into three sections - beginner, intermediate and advanced - based on ability rather than age or sex, meaning that they learn alongside players with a similar level of skill and there are no boundaries put in the way of the most talented.

Competitions are run throughout the year, there is regular individual and group coaching enabling all levels to progress and learn the building blocks of sound technique, understanding of the rules and appreciation of others through course etiquette that is required for a lifetime of good golf.

The group has its own junior convenor and committee and all fund-raising goes into a dedicated junior fund, so the section can be self sufficient to a large degree.

Extensive use is made of social media, with Facebook and Twitter being an excellent method of communication for keeping in contact with the juniors and letting them know what is happening at the club.

The approach appears to be working. Back-to-back victories for our youngsters in the Linlithgowshire

Summer League in 2011 and 2012 have seen the club reap the rewards of increased funding and support.

Juniors from the club claimed two county titles in 2012, while a team from Pumpherston earned national recognition by qualifying to represent Scotland in the prestigious home international team tournament in Spain.

It was a wonderful achievement for the team who in 2013 will be the first ever to represent Linlithgowshire in the competition.Success breeds success and the club is confident that since creating a development pathway, the future looks good for our up-and-coming golfers, who are the lifeblood of our sport.

We are a fairly relaxed club, but we do ask visitors to respect our rules and standard golfing etiquette to ensure their visit runs smoothly.

Although handicap certificates are not mandatory, we do prefer golfers to be of a sufficient standard for them to be able

to enjoy their round and for them not to inconvenience other players when out on the course.

The Seniors mixed OpenThis recent addition was introduced due to the popularity of both our Ladies Open and Seniors Open. It is a midweek open tournament and played in a greensomes format. members and visitors enjoy a relaxed game of golf and mix with couples from other golf clubs. This is one of our busiest catering days, which support the strong social aspect of this enjoyable golf event.

The mixed OpenThis greensomes open event is played at

the weekend and golfing couples compete for The BP Trophy.

The Seniors Texas Scramble OpenThis team event began in 2009 and has become an instant hit. It has a full entry each year and is played in teams of three. Each player must use four drives, which always keeps everyone on the toes. Once again this team event extends beyond the course and a wonderful clubhouse atmosphere can always be found on the day.

The Junior OpenThis event is separated into different categories and designed to support our future golfers.The winner is the competitor with the lowest nett score on the day and they are awarded The BP Trophy. It is open to both Boys and Girls with minimal restrictions. This popular competition is often selected as one of the qualifying events for the Lothians’ Golf Association Order of merit

You can always be sure of a warm and friendly welcome in the cosy

and comfortable clubhouse. It really is a lovely setting and from the feature bow window upstairs there are spectacular views out over our picturesque course, over the Almond Valley and beyond to the Pentland Hills.

The clubhouse, opened in 2002, offers our members spacious accommodation, with lounge and bar areas, a separate dining room and dedicated changing rooms for members and visitors.

Pop in before your round for a quick coffee and stay with us after you have signed your card to catch up with friends or colleagues. The leading topic of discussion will be finding the earliest free date in your diary when you can come back and enjoy again the golfing challenge that Pumpherston has to offer!

We are fully licensed with a selection of draught and bottled beers and also have a selection of fine wines, together with an extensive range of refreshing soft drinks.

Catering is available on a daily basis throughout the year, however, opening hours are seasonal, and can be dictated by the weather. Pumpherston Golf Club is located about two miles east of Livingston

in West Lothian and easily accessed via the m8 and m9 motorways as well as the A71 or A89.

For those with SatNav, our postcode is EH53 0LQ.

Directions

From the NorthHead east on m9, leaving the motorway at junction 2, taking the A89 for Broxburn. Take the first exit at the roundabout and remain on the A89. Upon reaching the next junction/traffic lights, turn left and follow signs for Almondale Country Park. After 1 mile, turn right onto Drumshoreland road

and follow signs for Pumpherston. The golf club will be on your left-hand side and the entrance is signposted.

From the East and WestHead towards Livingston on the m8 motorway. Leave at junction 3, taking the exit signposted Livingston rd/A899. After just under a mile, take the exit toward Eliburn/Ladywell/Livingston (North). After 200 yards take the first exit at the roundabout on to Houstoun rd. remain on this road for just under a mile, turning right on to Uphall Station rd/B8046 and after 300 yards take the 3rd left on to Drumshoreland road. The entrance to the club will be on the right.

From the SouthPumpherston can be accessed via route 75 off the A71 if travelling from the east of Dedridge, or if coming from the south west, leave the A71 at Dedridge, taking the 2nd exit for Calder Park road (B8046). remain on this road, which becomes the B7015, for about a mile and a half before turning left on to the B8046 again. After 1.3 miles turn right on to Drumshoreland road and you will come to the club on your right.

Public TransportThe nearest railway station is Uphall, which is just over a mile or a five-minute taxi ride away. Frequent services run from here to Edinburgh. Journey time is around 17 minutes.
