Assett are proud to be the Australian Mid Continent distributors for SMI Evaporators.

SMI® Evaporators manage water in industrial environments and produce water evaporation rates beyond traditional approaches such as misting heads and irrigation systems. They are used to expand the capacity or extend the life of current water treatment facilities (such as tailing dams, evaporation and cooling ponds or irrigation fields). Other times, new facilities are designed to maximize the accelerated evaporation rates achieved using our systems. They remove significant amounts of excess and un-wanted water economically yet environmentally friendly way. From providing one evaporator to full systems solutions, SMI has the experience and expertise to meet your needs.

SMI has two main categories of products for evaporation:

WATER FRACTURING - water is fractured through a high speed fan and propelled into the air

WATER ATOMIZATION - air is compressed via a fan through a tapered barrel and propels controlled-size water dropletscreated via nozzles

WATER FRACTURING PRODUCTSThis family of products is best used for the following conditions:

Smaller area required for evaporation and wet/dry drift containment

Neutral, Low (<4) or high (>13) pH water can be evaporated with the appropriatemodel

High solids or large particulateLower water pressure systems (<120 psi)

WATER ATOMIZATION PRODUCTS Our product line for water fracturing is the SMI® Polecat Evaporators.

This family of products is best used for the following conditions:

Larger area for evaporation and wet or dry drift

Neutral pH (>4 and <12)

Lower dissolved solids content and smaller to no particles*

Higher water pressure systems (100 to 400 psi)* automatic flush filters designed for high particle or dissolved solids can be utilized

Laser Alignment &

Assett Mechanical Engineering

Although synonymous throughout industry for excellence in pump selection, sales and repairs, Assett Mechanical Engineering have been laser aligning pumping equipment with state of the art, intrinsically

safe, Pruftechnik Rotalign Pro Ex equipment for many years. A more recent addition to the stable is the all new Rotalign Ultra with

Bore alignment capability and bracketing. Quick to adapt to new technology, we recognised the heightened accuracy that laser alignment would allow us to achieve, the time savings this would equate to and the benefits to our customers.

The enclosed information is an overview of our equipment and the capabilities of that equipment in the hands of our trained service

technicians.

Poor alignment

Poorly aligned shafts are responsible for many machine problems: Tests have shown that incorrect alignment is the cause for around 50% of machine breakdowns. Poor alignment or a misalignment is the name given if the centrelines of two shafts don’t run in the same axis.

Poor Alignment means :

Rise in machine vibrations Increased Bearing Wear Greater wear of sealing elements Excessive wear of the coupling Higher energy consumption.

Proper shaft alignment is worth it!

Lower levels of vibration mean less mechanical wear and better product quality. Less strain on the roll bearings and therefore longer service life. Decreased wear of the clutch. Reduced wear of the sealing elements, less impurities and less discharge of lubricant. Less energy useage. Longer machine running time – less repair overheads – less costs. Remedy through condition-oriented maintenance.

Poor machine alignment can be avoided within the framework of condition-oriented or preventive maintenance.

Conventional alignment methods such as feeler gages or straight edges certainly function simply and quickly, but don’t provide the necessary accuracy for modern machines. Dial gages achieve the nec-essary accuracy, but –even for experts– the process itself is tricky and time consuming. The resulting downtime, production loss and repair result in high costs. Precise alignment of shafts not only saves money, but also pays in the long term with trouble-free machine operation.

Shaft alignment is crucial to production reliability.

How does shaft alignment lead to premature failure of rotat-ing equipment ? When two machines are positioned such that their rotational axes are not collinear during operation, destructive forces and vibration arise which place shafts, couplings, bearings and foundations under additional load. The bearings and couplings are then the first elements to be damaged by excessive loading and permanent shaft defor-mation and material fatigue can develop as well. Indeed, experience has confirmed that over half of all rotating equipment failures occur due to shaft misalignment.

“ Who needs to bother with such high accuracy ? Modern flexible couplings can take a beating ! ”

This refrain is often heard when the idea of laser-optical alignment is first broached. In terms of operating reliability though, this argument can be a fatal one, for the alignment tolerances issued by coupling manufacturers are based pri-marily on those of the machines to be coupled, in other words, even a flexible coupling if misaligned transmits misa-lignment forces from one machine to the other and subjects seals, bearings, shafts and mountings to additional loading.

What happens when alignment is not accurate enough?

Misalignment leads to excessive loading of machines, the consequences of which may be manifest as machine vibra-tion. Abnormal or excessive loading of machines lead to in-creased loading of bearings, seals and shafts and therefore to a reduction in their useful operating life: even flexible couplings conduct misalignment forces from the shafts to these components.

Coupling alignment tolerances are invariably a guide to the ability of the coupling to withstand misalignment not neces-sarily the ability of ancillary equipment to withstand misa-lignment.

Modern mechanical seals for example require accurate in-stallation and accurate shaft alignment. The diagram illus-trates how even small amounts of misalignment allows con-tamination to enter a seal leading to premature wear. (Typically the cost of modern cartridge seal replacement can be as much as 60% of the original pump purchase price).

Misalignment increases coupling load

Infrared thermography makes the increase in coupling load due to misalignment readily apparent: the hotter the ma-chine element, the brighter it appears on the thermogram.

The thermograms shown here were taken on a typical pro-cess pump/motor aggregate which was aligned via typical dial indicator methods (at right), then using OPTALIGN® (at left). Not only can the flexible element of the coupling itself be seen to heat up, but the machines them selves also de-velop considerably elevated temperatures.

This effectively answers the often-raised question, 'Why bother with precision alignment when a flexible coupling is installed?' Even though the flexible coupling itself may well be able to withstand the effects of shaft misalignment, it still places the machines under additional loading forces, leading to premature wear (or even failure) of bearings and seals.

THE NEED FOR LASER SERVICES The need and value of precision laser alignment is simple: Proper alignment of your equipment im-proves production efficiency. Period! All production equipment must be precisely aligned in order to deliver accurate, quality parts - and to minimize wear and tear on your machinery. With time, the effects of heat, vibration, foundation movement, and routine repair work will inevitably cause even properly positioned machinery to become misaligned. Thus, periodic corrective alignment be-comes a necessity.

THE HIGH COST OF TECHNOLOGY Today's state-of-the-art laser alignment equipment is very sophisticated, and those who know how to properly use it - and decipher its results - are few and far between. The cost of bringing both the equipment and technical staff on board is cost prohibitive for most companies, even though such services are critical to their bottom line.

THE IDEAL SOLUTION

The most effective solution to this dilemma is to hire a company that utilizes the most advanced equipment and the most experienced laser technicians to perform its precision alignment services. Assett Mechanical Engineering is that company.
