Pulse of the Profession® 2020

Research Highlights by Region and IndustryThe new decade is ushering in a world full of complex issues, and organizational leaders need to reimagine not just the nature of work, but how it gets done. Individual projects are no longer viewed as separate yet adjacent to operations, but as how work gets accomplished and problems get solved. It’s the leaders who can mobilize the right team members to help the company move faster and achieve results who will thrive in The Project Economy.

At a time of extraordinary change, success requires having people with the skills and mindset to deliver big, bold projects. Yet the 2020 Pulse of the Profession® revealed that organizations are struggling to deliver. Organizations that undervalue project management as a strategic competency for driving change report an average of 67 percent more of their projects failing outright.

Executive leaders who want to stay ahead of the curve are rebuilding their organizations to make agility and creativity part of the organizational DNA and prioritizing building a culture that is receptive to change. To achieve success, organizations will need even more empowered project leaders with the skills and attitude to take the lead on change. Organizations must continue to mature their value delivery capabilities so that project leaders are equipped with the knowledge to apply any approach to needed to get work done.

Future FocusRethink the way work gets done by taking these steps:

1. Get nimble: Organizations that can fail fast and pivot to what’s next arebest positioned for the future.

2. Invest in technology—and people: Disruptive technologies like AI andmachine learning are only as smart as the people behind them. Executivesand project leaders must have the training, processes and talent to getthe job done right.

3. Don’t be limited by title or functional area: With so much change,executives are increasingly turning to project leaders to help them turnideas into reality. Today’s project managers must have a mix of technical,leadership, business and digital skills to deliver results and advocate forthe customer. In The Project Economy, project managers will need to breakdown silos between an organization’s function areas to leadmultidisciplinary teams of people.

Conducted since 2006, Pulse of the Profession® is the premier global survey of project management practitioners. Pulse follows the major

trends for project management now and in the future. It features original market research that reports feedback and insights from project, program and portfolio managers, along with an analysis of third-party data.

The 2020 edition of the Pulse highlights feedback and insights from 3,060 project professionals, 358 senior executives and 554 directors of project management from a range of industries, including information technology (IT), financial services, government, manufacturing, energy, construction, healthcare and telecom. Respondents span the globe including North America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations), China, India, and Latin America and the Caribbean.
