SAIL is our way of talking about the process of being disci- ples who make disciples. It is a snap- shot of the spiritual journey to which God is calling each person in this world – a journey that we want to be all about at BPUMC. Let’s take a look at each of these four stages on the journey. SEEK JESUS – Scripture tells us a rela- onship with Jesus is the most im- portant thing a person can find. In to- day’s world, fewer and fewer people who are seeking Jesus will come through our church doors on their own; they need a personal connecon with a Chrisan who can help them find the One they are looking for. SAIL means we are building those connecon op- portunies into the life of our church and will always be finding new and au- thenc ways to help non-Chrisans seek Jesus. ACTIVATE YOUR FAITH On the journey of faith, the goal is to move from seekers to believers, from people who are exploring faith to people who claim faith in God through Jesus Christ. Once we take this step of pung our lives in God’s hands, we begin to grow. That’s what this step of SAIL is all about: learning to live as a follower of Jesus. We are developing a menu of acvies to help you grow into a well-rounded follower of Jesus Christ, creang a clear pathway that anyone who wants to grow can follow. This pathway will help Joy in the Journey, Bill & Kristen you put in place the foundaon stones of faith, such as learning to read and under- stand the Bible, finding your spiritual giſts, establishing a habit of personal worship, learning to give, and telling your faith sto- ry. INVEST IN GOD’S MISSION At some point in Jesus’ ministry, he invited people to move from the crowd into the core. “Come follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people” (Mahew 4:19 NIV). This step of SAIL involves be- coming apprences of Jesus and learning to do what he did: to make disciples. This is done in life-on-life relaonships, with mature Chrisans taking newer ones alongside them to learn praccal ways to help others grow into fully devoted fol- lowers of Jesus. We are gathering mul- ple, flexible curricula to facilitate this. LOVE COMPLETELY What is the goal of our faith? Jesus said it’s to love God and love our neighbors. Our goal is love! There is no beer way to love God and people than to do what Jesus sent us out to do in Mahew 28: “Therefore go and make disciples of all naons, bapzing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have com- manded you.” (vv. 19-20, NIV). As Pastor Mike Breen has said, “If you make disci- ples, you will always get the church. But if you try to build the church, you will rarely get disciples.” SAIL means we will be a church focused on being disciples who make disciples. WHAT IS SAIL ALL ABOUT?

This fall we have been taking a fresh look at what God is leading us to be and to do as a church. SAIL is our way of talking about the process of being disci-ples who make disciples. It is a snap-shot of the spiritual journey to which God is calling each person in this world – a journey that we want to be all about at BPUMC. Let’s take a look at each of these four stages on the journey.

SEEK JESUS – Scripture tells us a rela-

tionship with Jesus is the most im-portant thing a person can find. In to-day’s world, fewer and fewer people who are seeking Jesus will come through our church doors on their own; they need a personal connection with a Christian who can help them find the One they are looking for. SAIL means we are building those connection op-portunities into the life of our church and will always be finding new and au-thentic ways to help non-Christians seek Jesus.

ACTIVATE YOUR FAITH – On the

journey of faith, the goal is to move from seekers to believers, from people who are exploring faith to people who claim faith in God through Jesus Christ. Once we take this step of putting our lives in God’s hands, we begin to grow. That’s what this step of SAIL is all about: learning to live as a follower of Jesus. We are developing a menu of activities to help you grow into a well-rounded follower of Jesus Christ, creating a clear pathway that anyone who wants to grow can follow. This pathway will help

Joy in the Journey, Bill & Kristen

you put in place the foundation stones of faith, such as learning to read and under-stand the Bible, finding your spiritual gifts, establishing a habit of personal worship, learning to give, and telling your faith sto-ry.

INVEST IN GOD’S MISSION – At some

point in Jesus’ ministry, he invited people to move from the crowd into the core. “Come follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people” (Matthew 4:19 NIV). This step of SAIL involves be-coming apprentices of Jesus and learning to do what he did: to make disciples. This is done in life-on-life relationships, with mature Christians taking newer ones alongside them to learn practical ways to help others grow into fully devoted fol-lowers of Jesus. We are gathering multi-ple, flexible curricula to facilitate this.

LOVE COMPLETELY – What is the goal

of our faith? Jesus said it’s to love God and love our neighbors. Our goal is love! There is no better way to love God and people than to do what Jesus sent us out to do in Matthew 28: “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have com-manded you.” (vv. 19-20, NIV). As Pastor Mike Breen has said, “If you make disci-ples, you will always get the church. But if you try to build the church, you will rarely get disciples.” SAIL means we will be a church focused on being disciples who make disciples.

ROUTE 56 Recap of events- Sept. 26th Campfire / Hayride at the Smith’s house.

What an amazing fall night we had!!! With almost 35 Fifth and Sixth graders there, we almost didn’t have enough room on the hay wagon. Not to mention that we had to feel some horrible feeling goop… It started as a calm hay ride but ended a little wild….

A special thank you to Greg Swan at Ready About Sailing for the loan of the beautiful Laser Pico sailboat that was in our Gallery during the during the 5 week SAIL vision casting for BPUMC.

Ready About is located on Jones and Gifford Ave. in Celeron.

November Birthdays

Dearest friends in Christ:

As a wise & gifted Christian sister, Ann VosKamp, often reminds, “God is always good & I am always loved.”

We have been deeply touched by our faith community - for your prayers, amazing gifts; and meals, abundant and delicious.

Your visits and flowers have bright-ened many otherwise gloomy mo-ments.

Your faithfulness to love others brings glory to God every day. We are grateful to be blessed be-yond measure.

Bill & Lynne Peterson

What an amazing response !!

The over 300 books collected for children in Cambodia was greatly appreciated. They are packed and ready to go next week, and will bring so much delight to so many children.

When I return in late Novem-ber, I will share many photos of the children receiving the books.

Many thanks, Sue Evans Missions Commission

MISSION & OUTREACH

Hope is like a road

in the country; there was

never a road, but when

many people walk on it,

the road comes into existence.

Lin Yutang

Charlie Hodges Coordinator of Mission & Outreach

A construction team was able to return to the

Tonawanda Indian Reservation on Columbus

Day to complete repairs to the old part (1870)

of the Baptist Church. This project was under-

taken through a relationship formed with the

United Methodist Church in Akron NY near the

reservation. We look forward to the possibility

of returning.

Thank you to everyone who provided pies for

the United Christian Advocacy Network

(UCAN) lunch in October. Suzanne Allen and

Chuck Pagan attended to serve the pies. Thank

you to Mike Quimby for providing music and a

personal testimony about a God of second

chances. Larry Nelson also attended to explore

ways UCAN might tie into the prison ministry

he and his wife Laura are involved with.

BPUMC was able to help sponsor a visit from

former NFL quarterback Jeff Kemp on Satur-

day Oct 18th. Jeff currently works with Family

Life Ministries out of Little Rock Arkansas (not

affiliated with Family Life Radio. Please visit

FamilyLife.com) Jeff shared at 5 venues during

the day his powerful message of investing in

relationships versus simply being a consumer.

BPUMC is once again helping to sponsor a din-

ner for Chautauqua County First Responders

(paid and volunteer) at Chautauqua Suites on

Saturday November 8th presented by the local

Fellowship of Christian Police Officers. Follow-

ing a really nice dinner, attendees will hear

from Lt. Craig Duck, president of the Interna-

tional Fellowship of Christian Firefighters as he

shares how his faith has impacted his career.

Please pray for all the local first responders

who will be attending and encourage any vol-

unteer firefighters and police officers you

might know to make reservations and attend.

Information is at each firehouse and police

station. Be sure to thank them for the service

they provide and the sacrifices they make.

On Saturday November 1 BPUMC will have a

table at the Community Helping Hands Annu-

al Emporium at the Gateway Center on Water

St. in Jamestown. It is basically a “flea market”

atmosphere. Our hope is to provide a gener-

ous bag of fresh fruit and vegetables at a re-

duced price along with a “Knowing God Per-

sonally” booklet for folks attending. Please

contact Charlie Hodges if you might be able to

help at the table any time from 10am -2pm

that day.

We are currently looking into the possibility of

a return trip to Haiti on March 28 - April 4,

2015 which is our spring school break. We are

limited to just 20 people so please watch for

any informational meetings and/or contact

Charlie Hodges [email protected] or 969

6407.

We are also looking into the possibility of a

reading partner/mentoring type program for

the children at the Bemus Point Elementary

School. Please contact Charlie Hodges if you

feel led to participate. Details to follow.

Four hundred “Blizzard Boxes” will once again

be packed for Meals on Wheels following each

worship service on Sunday November 9th.

Please allow a little extra time after worship to

help with this project.

When you're grieving the death of a family member or friend, or if you are experiencing the pain of separation or divorce, you may dread the holiday season. Thoughts of social gatherings and family traditions and obligations may leave you anxious and overwhelmed. Your sadness can seem unbearable. You may wish you could skip these next two months and go straight to the routine of the next year -- but you can't. What can you do to lessen your stress and loneliness?

"Surviving the Holidays" is a helpful, encouraging seminar for people facing the holidays after significant loss. The seminar will have two sessions meeting simultaneously: GriefShare for those grieving the death of a loved one, and DivorceCare for those experiencing separation or divorce. It will be held on Sunday, November 16, beginning at 12:15 at BPUMC. A light lunch will be provided and there is no charge.

Both the GriefShare and the DivorceCare sessions feature practice suggestions and reassurance through video inter-views with counselors, relationship experts, and other people who have experienced the holidays during grief or marital breakup. Topics to be discussed include "Why the Holidays Are Tough," "What to Expect," "How to Pre-pare," "How to Manage Relationships and Holiday Socials," and "Using the Holidays to help You Heal."

Those who attend will receive a free book providing additional insights and practical ideas for holiday survival. For more information, call Mary Ahlstrom at 386-3401 or e-mail [email protected].

THE SEARCH IS ON!

Seeking: Women’s voices to serve once a month in the choir at the 11:00 AM traditional service. If you have any information to help us in this investigation, please call our church hotline (386-3401) or see Carolyn Barnes, BPUMC choir director.

Even though it was a blur, October was a great month of ministry to our teens here at BPUMC! The Maple Grove Impact Groups, which is a Christian Club recognized by the school, began to meet. They have had an exciting start with well over 60 teens partici-pating the first couple weeks. We know God will use them to encourage youth in their faith and to draw many to Christ on the school campus.

We also had an extremely successful Fall Camp Out. We had close to 60 students stay for 2 nights at Camp Mission Mead-ows! Mission Meadows is a fantastic facility and our sessions in the Chapel were awesome. We also grew as a group work-ing through the low ropes challenge courses, and lots of fun was had in the gym as well. Both Worship bands, LoveQuest and +One lead in worship and our speaker was Edinboro's Chi-Alpha Missionary, Nichole Schreiber, whom did a fantastic job. We know every youth that was there was touched by God's presence.

Looking ahead to this month we have some fun Wednesdays planned: Laser Tag Night on the 5th., and Team Pizza Bake Off on the 12th. LoveQuest has been asked to lead worship for two Regional Fall Gatherings, one in Albany and the second in Rochester. Any students interested in attending the Rochester Gathering please sign up at the Youth Check In Table AND REGISTER online at https://unyumc-reg.brtapp.com/FallGatheringWest2014.

November is the month of Thanksgiving! Steph and I are so happy to be here at BPUMC and in our new home. We have had a truly blessed year and are extremely thankful to our new church family for making us feel welcomed, loved and at home. May you be remind-ed of all of the LORD’s blessings in your life this month.
