CoMES PULSE From the Vice Chancellor’s desk This is a moment of glory for College of Management and Economics Studies (CoMES) getting the IACBE accreditation for its MBA programs in O&G and LSCM. I congratulate the college and the entire team that has relentlessly worked towards the achievement. This is also the proof of outcome orientation in CoMES, and for producing industry- ready professionals. Besides outcome orientation and collaborations, MOUs and partnerships are vital now for educa- tional institutions and I see CoMES already surging ahead in these initiatives under the leadership of Dr. D.N. Pandey, CoMES and ably supported by the Associate Deans. The new leadership at CoMES has certainly given the expected stability and governance to the college. The research seminar series has started off well and the frequency of guest lectures and the visits of the corporate professionals have brought in a fresh breadth of vibrancy to the college. Another notable development is that students at CoMES are now looking forward to foreign internships. Four of our students would be going to Dubai for their paid summer internships- I am sure it would give our students valuable exposure. Earlier, I had expressed through this newsletter my desire to see management students taking part in national competitions and bringing laurels to the col- lege. I am quite happy to learn that already some students of CoMES have taken part in prestigious national competitions and some having won those competitions. We should continue to frequent our strides in that direction. I congratulate team Pulse for featuring all these inspiring achievements through this newsletter. Indeed, it goes a long way in motivating the students to strive for more excellence. This brings us to yet another successful end of an academic season with 80%+ placements and we will continue to support each of our students at place- ments. Congratulations all round and the very best wishes. Director’s message

College of Management and Economics Studies (CoMES), UPES has acquired a unique identity amongst the

schools of Management for strong domain focused business programs since its inception. The College actively

promotes collaborations with industry and academic institutions. Research seminar series on Thursdays has

created a strong platform for academicians across the globe to showcase their research in progress. MDPs,

seminars and guest lectures have seen the industry professionals partic-

ipate in the industry-academia collaborative projects and sharing of

ideas thereby paving the way for students in learning the ropes in the

world of business. All the departments at CoMES have relentlessly

worked hard to achieve this, I applaud and congratulate all for their

efforts. While I know that, this wave of initiatives would continue and

perhaps even get stronger in the coming months, I must say that our

students shall gain as the end benefit of all our efforts. Of course, they

are the torchbearers of our ideas and actions. Faculty at CoMES in-

tensely believes in quality outcomes and ensures that our students re-

main at the focus of all college activities. In fact, this has created an ecosystem that eventually leads to the

gamut of activities for enhancing holistic personality of our students. Such an ecosystem not only gives our stu-

dents a flavor of corporate culture and wings of innovation but also lets them celebrate diversity and team-

work. No wonder, therefore when we see our students take rapid strides with the best of the corporate names

and some even plunging into their own start-ups. Pulse team featured some of the inspiring start-up stories of

CoMES earlier and I see a few more in this newsletter as well. I take this opportunity to thank our Vice Chan-

cellor Dr. Shrihari Honwad, Chancellor Dr. S.J Chopra, CEO and President Mr. Utpal Ghosh for all the energy

and support in driving the success of the college. I am quite happy to note that CoMES - Pulse has compre-

hensively covered the vibrant landscape of college activities and achievements in all its issues. In fact, this

newsletter is one of a kind that integrates all the departmental activities of CoMES and presents to its readers

the philosophy and spirit of college in an engaging and inspiring manner. I congratulate all the students and

faculty of team Pulse who have been consistently achieving this of late. I am sure our readers would enjoy the

kaleidoscopic glimpses of CoMES, UPES through this newsletter.

stakeholders of academics in

CoMES to become a strong

and future-ready change agent through academic

research. The constant challenge of the business

world as well as the society expects us to upgrade

our knowledge and directed efforts for academic

excellence. CoMES launched “Research seminar

researchers share their research work with acade-

micians fortnightly. The FDP on “Analysis with R” &

faculty members, scholars & students. Forth-

coming events planned are Workshops on

“Academic Writing”, “Research Guidance”

and “Proposal Writing” & conferences –

Eminent Visitors to Campus

Bhumika Palni from Pulse interviews Dr. Parag Diwan, , Founder Vice-Chancellor, UPES .

Q. How do you feel about coming back to UPES and about the transition in UPES?

Well, how I feel about coming back to UPES, this is actually an emotional question. Seeing an idea in your

mind and then seeing it grow into such a big university is actually

what makes me emotional. From ideation state it has grown into

so many colleges working successfully.

Q. What opportunities do you see for UPES to play on national and

international stage?

On national level, the focus should be on economic policies such

as Niti Ayog and Think-Tank. On International level, students as well

as teachers should participate more in international competitions,

as it’s a wonderful experience and gives a bigger platform to

grow.

Q. Your valuable message to students?

You are living in a VUCA world, a world full of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity. The world

keeps changing fast. You can’t live like a mediocre. You have to excel in at least one field of your choice.

Participate!

Q. Since you were the VC when PULSE started, any message for team Pulse?

I wanted to see the latest edition of PULSE as to how much it has grown since then and what all changes

have come. Usually magazines end up, but I want Pulse to grow, grow a lot and keep growing.

Dr. H. Trivedi, Professor and Chair – Faculty of Communications,

Flame University Pune, visited CoMES, UPES on 10th April 2017. He

gave a lecture on Digital marketing and interacted with MBA and

BBA students of CoMES. On his key note address Dr. Trivedi em-

phasized on the digitization that is happening in the industry and

the adaption to the change. He motivated students to work hard

and think big and participate more and more in the external

competitions and events.

The CoMES Clubs are integral part of growth and development of the students on our campus. There are do-

main and non- domain clubs that organize various activities targeted to provide a platform for the students to

grow in all dimensions of effective business manager. Different clubs are also a

source of creative expression. The students have come up with creative and ingen-

ious activities. Participation in activities outside the campus is yet another important

role that the clubs play. Though participation itself comes with reward of experience

and learning, we are proud of the fact that our students have won various prestigious

awards this semester. The students manage clubs and faculty play the role of men-

tors. We have nine non- domain and four domain clubs on campus. Though all the

clubs operate under the leadership of faculty mentors, the unifying vision for the club

activities is to improve the overall employability of our students and groom our stu-

dents for challenges. The club activities is where the rubber meets the road. The stu-

dents exhibit the skills of organizing, directing, execution, conflict management, com-

munication, reporting, analysis, and a host of other managerial skills. Many of these skills form the course con-

tent of our syllabus. Having a platform to practice makes our buddying managers so much tuned to the world

Oil is precious and is limited in nature. A step and awareness to conserve oil is

one of the most crucial steps in need of the day.

To implement this cause, a WALKATHON was organized by Department of Oil

and Gas (UPES) in association with HPCL under HPCL’s social awareness cam-

paign “SAKSHAM”.

The event included oath ceremony to promote PCRA, followed by the speeches

of Associate Dean Dr. S.K Pokhriyal and Mr G.H.V Rao (Regional Manager – Re-

tail, HPCL) emphasizing the importance of Oil Conservation.

The WALKATHON was flagged off by Dr. S.K Pokhriyal, Dr. Mandira Aggarwal and

Mr G.H.V Rao. Over 200 students, staff of Oil and Gas Department and Regional

Students’ Start-up

What is the difference between college and school?

A 12th pass student like me, inquisitive to see that kind

of lifestyle often wondered? And I just say one word-

“EXPOSURE”. Hi! My name is Suyash Jain, student of

BBA, Retail Management, UPES, Dehradun. Every stu-

dent cannot be judged on

a single parameter. Every

kid is born with its own area

of interest and talent. We

cannot judge them on a

standard parameter, be-

cause Sachin Tendulkar

could be a big time failure

in acting, but we know,

what he has achieved in his

own area of interest. To-

day’s schools have also re-

alized this fact and boost

students in taking part in extra-curricular activity, but

the horizons of it are very much limited. I am an aver-

age student of management stream, belonging from

a business background. I have always heard at home

that in real life, it’s experience which all it matters, and

so is my approach towards life. I love participating in

competitions and workshops, whether it’s of my direct

or indirect interest, because I feel this whole world is

inter connected and live experience of others with

personal experience of once own, is all what makes

difference. Every journey has its own obstacles, so as

this one. In spite being inquisitive, I missed out compe-

titions. In management we are taught to manage

things in the most effective and efficient manner. So I

came up with an idea of doing something, in which

students like me do not face problem, in knowing

about the competitions going around them. Encour-

age them to participate, organize, and explore them-

selves. Being a management student I faced a lot

problem in executing the plan, that’s the difference

between an idea and approach. One of my friend

Raghav Agarwal as co-founder joined me and we

are able to make a good working team of students.

Not associating from a

technical background

and with lack of funds for

hiring CTO (Chief Tech-

nical Officer) for the exe-

cution my idea, my deter-

mination lead me do it on

my own. Hence today

after a complete year of

proper survey and hard

work, I am ready to

launch before you my

website InstaKhoJ. It is an

online portal where you can explore the different

competitions, going within the Dehradun. Know the

summary of the competitions/workshops and take

part in it. For people trying to enter the organizing

world can even publicize their event, and even ap-

proach for consultation help. A one stop site, to tackle

with all your problems and inquisitives regarding com-

petitions, because as I said college is all about expo-

sure. In upcoming future the portal will be ready to

solve various students related issues in Dehradun.

INSTAnt approach for all your queries, so stop the end-

less KHOJ, at which you are every time.

As it is said that every problem has its solution within it,

and so has this one.

Students’ Start-up

It was a Sunday morning, of March 2016, as usual, I was

having a cup of coffee at my rented accommodation

along with my brother Prince. While reading a newspa-

per article, he asked “If Bata had already designed

chappal, then why Liberty came into the market?”

and we started discussing the complications in the un-

organized service indus-

try and the non-

availability of the com-

mon platform for such

services over the Inter-

net.

After brainstorming, we

ended up setting a vi-

sion that we have to

create a single platform

where various services

can be rendered to the

people.

We knew that the idea was potent, and somehow it

was making us restless and insomniac. Then we decid-

ed to share this concept from classroom to board-

room.

I must say that we received a lot of appreciation for

the same especially from our Mentors Dr. Sunil Barthwal

(H.O.D, Marketing Dept.) and Dr. Deepankar

Chokroborty (H.O.D Decision Sciences) and my class

fellows and friends. Our Mentors extended their support

to create a framework for the business model and thus

the EasyGhaat was formed.

After the formation of ‘EasyGhaat’, we had various

brainstorming sessions with the team which included

Manav, Jatin, Soumya, Kriti, Harshit, my Prince and I for

developing business structure and the viable services

which we could deliver. We decided to embark our

journey with Laundry and Dry Cleaning service, howev-

er, obtaining the re-

sources was a de-

manding challenge,

however Thanks to the

in house resources

which we had such as

IT, Operational effi-

ciency and the pas-

sion to move forward.

We contacted several

people and received

our first order which

was of Rs.865. We

were absolutely pleased, although we didn't have any

vendors available at that time hence we completed

the task on our own.

We also managed to connect several vendors with

EasyGhaat. Although the journey wasn't easy but

somehow we managed to find better solutions.

To promote Brand awareness and acquire consumer

engagement we formulate strategy and met with an-

other Digital marketing expert Abhay and also engage

two valuable interns Dia & Shovan from BBA (DM).

Student exchange program with foreign universities

Seven students from MBA-IB, BBA-FT, and MA Economics (with specialization in Energy Economics)

got confirmation from their respective foreign universities under Students’ Exchange Program. The de-

tails are as follows:

MBA-IB: (01) student – University of Alberta, Canada

(03) students- University of Maribor, Slovenia

BBA-FT: (02) students- University of Maribor, Slovenia

MA Economics: (01) student- University of Maribor, Slovenia

My journey at UPES till now has been like a roller coaster ride. Here, I have had

times which has made me work hard but there are also times when I have been

relieved with the fun and enjoyment. As I joined this university I was very much

impressed by the Personality Enhancement Program (PEP) classes organized by the college as it is

very necessary for a student to learn basics of business before turning into managers. Gradually,

as the semester started, I observed the faculty here is not just a guide for us but acts as a mentor

for us. The college not only focuses on our mental growth but also focuses on our participation

towards co-curricular fields such as dance, drama, art, etc. Furthermore, the university hosts a fest

named URJA every year which is a perfect platform for us to showcase our talent. I would just

conclude my six months journey here at UPES by saying that UPES is not just a university which fo-

cusses on our academic growth but also the one which aims at creating perfect humans.

High Performer in JOB writes to CoMES Mentors………………….

Dear Mentors

"A Teacher takes a hand, opens a mind and touches a Heart"

This quote is very true in my life. I am really happy to inform you that I have been selected in my com-

pany "Tieto Corporation" as one of the lucky members to be part of the "Tieto Leadership Forum" to be

held in Finland. I am the youngest member and selected because Iam listed as the "Young Talent".I

strongly believe in my heart that the reason for this is my Mentors. The lessons I have learned and the

training that I have received from all of you is the reason for my Success.

I would like to thank:

Dr. Pokhriyal and Dr. Geo: Thanks for selecting me as a Class Representative and supporting me to

manage a class of students who are from different parts of the country and who have worked in differ-

ent companies. I am doing a similar work here and I feel it was a good training.Thank you also for the

Excellent Oil and Gas Domain training. I now realize the value of each class and wish if I could have

listened better.

Dr. Sheetal Khanka: Negotiation Skills was one of the best subjects I have ever learned in my life and

importantly it was the way you teach the subject. It now helps me to manage my clients well and

eventually get what we need. It has also helped me in my personal life.

Dr. Sunil Barthwal: It was because of you that I had won QUEST 2016, which was a research paper com-

petition in our company, and I was again the Youngest. I learned that no matter how well your re-

search or product is, its not complete without Marketing it well.

Dr. Ankur Mittal: What i have learned from you is Patience and Humbleness. No matter how the class

was you always took the extra effort to teach us and make us understand complicated topics of your

subject.

Dr. Tarun Dhingra: Your subject was an eye-opener and the way you took the class was amazing. I al-

ways think of ways to have a competitive advantage in every action. It helped me to analyze the Busi-

ness of my clients better and in the future, I wish to suggest ways for them to improve.

Finally, I would like to Thank UPES for having such amazing Mentors who are a key element for Forge

COMES

TOP RECRUITERS

Editorial I congratulate Pulse team for yet another brilliant issue of CoMES Pulse. I am

particularly happy to see that students have included the startup and innova-

tions page as a regular feature in the newsletter. However, in terms of gener-

ating more content for this section it means a huge responsibility for the entire

college fraternity. I am quite sure we will live up to this challenge. Frequency

of the events, guest lectures and seminars covered in the newsletter have

risen which is indicative of the overall zeal and enthusiasm at CoMES. The stu-

dents and faculty achievements, which seem to swell up every time with the

new issue of the newsletter reflects the same excitement.

Our Director, Dr. D.N.Pandey upholds grooming students in terms of diversity

and gender sensitization for overall personality development. ‘CoMES Pulse’

acknowledges the same belief and have equal representation of girls in its editorial team and the prac-

tice would continue for future editions of the newsletter as well. Finally, I would like to congratulate and

welcome our new batch of students for joining CoMES and encourage them to join this forum for show-

casing their talents and achievements to the world. Contributions to the newsletter in the form of write-
