Pulse•By Devin Nguyen•Mr. Leingang •Fourth Pr. Science
Problem
•How does different type of music effect someone's pulse?
Hypthoesis
•As I change the type of music then the person pulse will change because of each music has there own beat and rhythm.
Materials
•CD•CD player•Headphones•One Person•And A Timer
Variables
•MV: Different type of music•CV: Time of music played
and one person through entire experiment •RV: The Number Of Pulses
Procedure• Step one: Setup see diagram• Step two: Put headphones on person and
play music• Step three: Wait for one minute• Step four: Take headphones off and measure
pulse by putting two fingers on the wrist • Step five: Change music• Step six: Repeat 2-5 again for 10 times• Step seven: Repeat steps 2-5 for ten times
with different music

BackgroundMy science project is what type of music effects your pulse. Pulse is the
throbbing of arteries. There are five main arteries to measure pulse at. The first artery where you can measure pulse is at the neck. The artery that measures the pulse by the neck is called the carotid artery. The second artery is called the popliteal artery, its is measure behind the knee. The third artery is the radial artery you measure the pulse from the wrist. The four artery you measure pulse is brachial artery and you measure the pulse at the elbow. The final artery where you measure pulse is the posterior tibial artery you measure the pulse at the ankle joint. Those are the five main arteries where you measure pulse is at.
Music is a art form of sounds organized in time. Music has six common elements. There is pitch and pitch is the property of sound measured by frequency. The second element is melody, melody is a linear successions of musical tones. The third element is harmony, harmony is the uses of different pitches. The four element is rhythm and rhythm is any movement or flow symmetry. The fifth element in music is tempo, tempo is the speed of a given piece. The sixth and last element in music is meter, meter is the measuring of rhythmic units.
ConclusionI thought that if we change the type of music then the soft rock would have the highest pulse rate. Our results showed that I was right the pulse of soft rock was higher then the pulse of R&B and J-Pop/K-Pop. The average pulse rate when listening to R&B is 58.4. The average rate of listening to J-Pop/K-Pop is 59.4. The average pulse rate when listening to soft rock is 60.6. The difference of soft rock and R&B is 02.2. The difference of soft rock and J-Pop/K-Pop is 01.2. The information proves that my hypothesis is right because the type of music gave different pulse rates when listening to the music.
Abstract
My data could have been different if I use the same music. I did this experiement because I like music. I learn that the faster and the more beats there are the higher the pulse rate is. I would do this project again because it was easy and fun.
