See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land. Solomon (Song of Songs 2:11-12)

Little Bird Song Kindergarten Sabbath School Kate Douglas Wiggin

Up, up in the sky, the little birds fly; Down, down in the nest the little birds rest, With a wing on the left, and a wing on the right, We’ll let the dear birdies rest all the long night.

The round sun comes up, the dew floats away; Good morning, bright sunshine! The little birds say. How gay are the flow’rs, how green is the wood, Our Heavenly Father, how kind and how good!

CONGREGATIONAL CALL TO WORSHIP Terra Beata

This Is My Father’s World

This is my Father’s world, And to my listening ears, All nature sings, and round me rings The music of the spheres.

This is my Father’s world; I rest me in the thought Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas; His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world, The birds their carols raise; The morning light, the lily white, Declare their Maker’s praise.

This is my Father’s world; He shines in all that’s fair. In the rustling grass I hear Him pass; He speaks to me everywhere.

INVOCATION Fashioned for Joy David Wood A Gaelic Prayer

Reader As the hand is made for holding and the eye for seeing, You have fashioned me for joy.

All Share with me the vision that shall find it everywhere:

Reader In the wild violet’s beauty; All In the lark’s melody;

Reader In the face of a steadfast person; All In a child’s smile;

Reader In a mother’s love; All In the purity of Jesus.

HYMN OF PRAISE All Creatures of Our God and King Lasst uns erfreuen

All creatures of our God and King, Lift up your voice with us and sing: Allelulia! Alleluia!

O burning sun with golden beam And silver moon with softer gleam: Oh, praise Him! Oh, praise Him! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

O rushing wind and breezes soft, O clouds that ride the winds aloft: Oh, praise Him! Alleluia!

O rising morn, in praise rejoice, O lights of evening, find a voice. Oh, praise Him! Oh, praise Him! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

O flowing waters, pure and clear, Make music for your Lord to hear. Oh, praise Him! Alleluia!

O fire so masterful and bright, Providing us with warmth and light, Oh, praise Him! Oh, praise Him! Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!

ON EAGLE’S WINGS “On Eagle’s Wings” was composed by Michael Joncas in 1979 after Vatican Council II, when the Catholic Church began using vernacular hymns at Mass. Its words are based on Psalm 91. It quickly proved to be quite popular as a contemplative song in Catholic as well as at Protestant services and is now sung in churches of many denominations. Jan Michael Joncas (born 1951) is a priest, liturgical theologian, and composer of contemporary Catholic music. He received an MA in liturgy from the University of Notre Dame in 1978 and went on to study at the Pontifical Liturgical Institute in Rome. He was ordained in 1980, and teaches at the University of St. Thomas (St. Paul, Minnesota) and at the University of Notre Dame.

ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL Cecil Frances Alexander (do you get the idea that perhaps her father really wanted a son?) was the wife of an Anglican minister, and always taught a Sunday School class in the churches where he served. She was concerned children could not understand sections of the Apostle’s Creed, and so wrote a hymn to illustrate each article. This one represents the section: “I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.” But she sets each category with simple examples to explain God’s creative work, and how each example praises Him. The tune ROYAL OAK is a composition of Martin Shaw. It was developed from an English traditional melody, based on the restoration of Charles II to the throne, May 29, 1660. It recalls the fact that Charles II was hidden in an oak tree after his defeat at the battle of Worcester.

NOT ONE SPARROW IS FORGOTTEN This is a Shaker hymn, here harmonized by William Hawley. The Shaker communities were organized by founder Mother Ann Lee. These communities (there were nineteen of them) were established with the concept of “hands to work and hearts to God.” Founded in England, they emigrated to the United States in 1774. They believed in a rather monastic way of life, but other sections of the 19th century found some of their practices shocking. They believed in community ownership, pacifism, dancing in worship, equality of the sexes, celibacy, and simple living. They developed technologies of craftmanship, integrity, and reliability. Shakers cared for the poor and used resources and profit for social good. This lovely hymn tells us God’s care is continual, and His mercy is everlasting.

Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Jesus (Luke 12:24)

of the living God. The hymn tune PROVIDENCE is found in Walker’s Southern Harmony(1835), a collection of hymn tunes from Appalachia. It, along with the Sacred Harp, was the most successful of the tune books of the period.

CREATIVE GOD, YOU SPREAD THE EARTH Text to come

GOD OF THE SPARROW, GOD OF THE WHALE Jaroslav Vajda is a son of a Lutheran pastor of Slovak descent. He began translating classical Slovak poetry as a young man. He received much acclaim for this work, and it has been praised and published in the United States and Europe. He did not start writing hymns until much later in his life, but has gone on to write and translate more than 200 to date. He has published many hymns, books, translations, and articles and has served on hymnal committees, particularly in the Lutheran church. This hymn tells us of the adoration of all nature and how, by their very presence, each one praises God.

HIS EYE IS ON THE SPARROW The author of this hymn, Civilla Martin, was visiting a friend who was so physically weakened that she was bedridden. Yet her friend seemed never to be discouraged. She commented to Civilla that it was impossible to feel depressed when God cared even for the lowly sparrow; and loved her as His child. Civilla marveled at this. Upon arriving home,

she quickly wrote down the first draft of this gospel song, which has been an inspiration for many. We owe our thanks to Charles H. Gabriel for this tune. He told his mother that one day he would write a song. His mother replied she would rather he write a song to help someone than see him president of the United States. Gabriel went on to write many successful gospel song tunes and was associated with the evangelist Billy Sunday for many years. This tune has also been made famous through the singing of Ethel Waters at the Billy Graham Crusades.

FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH Falliott Sandford Pierpoint wrote this text in 1864 for a Communion service. He taught classics at Somersetshire College. He lived in Bath, England, where he enjoyed taking long walks. One spring evening he noted the beautiful primroses and violets blooming and meditated on these many gifts of God. He published three volumes of poems and wrote other hymns.

John Rutter, composer of the tune, was born in London in 1945 and studied music at Clare College, Cambridge. His compositions embrace choral, orchestral, and instrumental music, and he has co-edited various choral anthologies including four Carols for Choirs volumes with Sir David Willcocks and the Oxford Choral Classics series. From 1975-9 he was Director of Music at Clare College, and in 1981 formed his own choir, the Cambridge Singers, as a professional chamber choir dedicated primarily to recording. He now divides his time between composition and conducting, and has guest-conducted or lectured at many concert halls, universities, churches, music festivals, and conferences in Europe, Scandinavia, and North America.

TODAY’S HYMNS

THE CARE THE EAGLE GIVES HER YOUNG Jessie Seymour Irvine was the daughter of a parish minister in Scotland. Her most famous hymn tune is CRIMOND, written when she was in her teens. It may have been an exercise for an organ class she was taking. It is usually paired with the metrical arrangement of Psalm 23, but makes a new pairing with the hymn text written by R. Deane Postlewaite. Mr. Postlewaite is a contemporary hymn writer, and we can all enjoy the pairing of his text with the lovely tune of CRIMOND.

LITTLE BIRD SONG We are indebted to Kate Douglas Wiggin for both the tune and the text of this song. Mrs. Wiggin’s emphasis was early childhood education. She realized the importance of it long before it was the norm for learning, setting up the first free kindergarten on Silver Street in San Francisco and later founding the California Kindergarten Training School. Her main emphasis was books and songs with direct expression on preparing young children for later learning experiences. Her best-known book was entitled Kindergarten Chimes and was dedicated “to hundreds of little children who have clustered around my knee … to echo rhymes … of their childhood days.”

My personal introduction to this song occurred when I was in Cradle Roll and a young visitor asked to sing “The Dog Song.” The leaders could find no such music, so asked the child to sing it. The child began singing “Pup, Pup in the sky” and the name of the “Dog Song” was solved.

THIS IS MY FATHER’S WORLD It seemed that Maltbie Babcock had everything: looks, brains, charisma, and money. It was a surprise to everyone that he chose to become a pastor. After training at Auburn Theological Seminary, he began his ministry at a Presbyterian church in Lockport, New York. It was a beautiful area, and Babcock loved to run. He would tell his secretary: “I’m going out to see my father’s world” before he would began his run. During this pastorate he wrote this hymn. A later congregation presented him with a generous gift of a trip to the Holy Land. Sadly, he fell ill in Naples, Italy, and died there at the age of 42. The tune TERRA BEATA (Blessed Land) is a traditional English melody, arranged by Franklin Sheppard and first appeared in his hymnal Allelujah in 1915.

ALL CREATURES OF OUR GOD AND KING Francis of Assisi wrote this hymn/poem near the end of his life in 1225. It was called Song of Brother Sun, and speaks to his love of nature. This text was not discovered until 1919, when William Draper decided to use it for a children’s festival in Leeds, England. The tune LASST UNS ERFREUEN first appeared in Germany in 1623, written by Peter von Brachel. It was later harmonized by Ralph Vaughan Williams and included in the English Hymnal of 1906.

THE LONE, WILD BIRD This lovely text was written by Henry McFayden (1877-1964). It was his entry to a national hymn-writing festival he found advertised in a magazine. He forgot about submitting it until he was informed he had won third prize! The text is a summation of Psalm 139:2-4, and reminds us we are never out of the sight or mind

I realized that If I had to choose, I would rather have birds than airplanes. Charles Lindbergh

SCRIPTURE LESSON Job 38:4-11, 36; 39:13, 26-29 (New Jerusalem Bible) Kirk Rue, Carolyn Lacy

“Where were you when I laid the earth's foundations? Tell me, since you are so well-informed!

“Who decided its dimensions, do you know? Or who stretched the measuring line across it?

“What supports its pillars at their bases? Who laid its cornerstone to the joyful concert of the morning stars and unanimous acclaim of the sons of God?

“Who pent up the sea behind closed doors when it leapt tumultuous from the womb, when I wrapped it in a robe of mist and made black clouds its swaddling bands;

when I cut out the place I had decreed for it and imposed gates and a bolt?

“‘Come so far,’ I said, ‘and no further; here your proud waves must break!’

“Who endowed the ibis with wisdom and gave the cock his intelligence?

“Can the wing of the ostrich be compared with the plumage of the stork or falcon?

“Is it your wisdom that sets the hawk flying when he spreads his wings to travel south?

“Does the eagle soar at your command to make her eyrie in the heights?

“She spends her nights among the crags with a needle of rock as her fortress, from which she watches for prey, fixing it with her far-ranging eye.”

CHORAL CALL TO PRAYER For the Beauty of the Earth John Rutter

For the beauty of the earth, For the beauty of the skies, For the love which from our birth Over and around us lies.

Lord of all, to thee we raise This our joyful hymn of praise.

For the beauty of each hour Of the day and of the night, Hill and vale, and tree and flower, Sun and moon and stars of light:

Lord of all, to thee we raise This our joyful hymn of praise.

For the joy of human love, Brother, sister, parent, child, Friends on earth, and friends above, For all gentle thoughts and mild.

Lord of all to thee we raise This our joyful hymn of praise.

When thou seest an eagle, thou seest a portion of genius; lift up thy head! William Blake

CONGREGATIONAL HYMN All Things Bright and Beautiful Royal Oak Stanza 1 to be sung as refrain after stanzas 2 and 3

1. All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all.

2. Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings; He made their glowing colors, He made their tiny wings.

3. He gave us eyes to see them, And lips that we might tell How great is God Almighty, Who has made all things well.

There is nothing in which the birds differ more from man than the way in which they can build and yet leave a landscape as it was before. Robert Lynd

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand.

You who dwell in the shelter of the Lord, who abide in His shadow for life, say to the Lord: “My refuge, my Rock in whom I trust!”

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand.

The snare of the fowler will never capture you, and famine will bring you no fear: under His wings your refuge, His faithfulness your shield.

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn,

make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand.

You need not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day; though thousands fall about you, near you it shall not come.

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand.

For to His angels He’s given a command to guard you in all of your ways; upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.

And He will raise you up on eagle’s wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand.

Recessional: Not One Sparrow Is Forgotten “Not one of them is forgotten before God.” Luke 12:6

Not one sparrow is forgotten, E’en the raven God will feed;

And the lily of the valley From His bounty hath its need.

Then shall I not trust Thee, Father. In Thy mercy have a share?

And through faith and prayer, my Mother, Merit Thy protecting care?

For each perfect gift of thine To our race so freely given Graces human and divine, Flow’rs of earth and buds of heav’n:

Lord of all, to thee we raise This our joyful hymn of praise.

CHORAL RESPONSE

READING Mountain Brook with Rushing Waters Carolyn Lacy

Mountain brook with rushing waters, eagle perched in lofty tree, flowering hillside in the springtime, white-tailed deer alert and free! Beauty, beauty all around us! Jubilate! Sing for joy! Help us, God, preserve earth’s splendor for tomorrow’s world to see.

Keep us faithful in the struggle to conserve earth’s threatened store As we fight to save the forest, clean the stream, protect the shore. God and humans work together. Jubilate! Sing for joy! Partners working till as stewards we can say, “Earth’s good!” once more.

ANTHEM On Eagle’s Wings Setting by Douglas E. Wagner Psalm 91

I once had a sparrow alight upon my shoulder for a moment, while I was hoeing in a village garden, and I felt that I was more distinguished by that circumstance that I should have been by any epaulet I could have worn. Thoreau
