Welcome everyone to the Matamata Domain for the start of another season. This year we turn 85, which is a milestone worth celebrating. We’ll do so throughout the year.

I’d like to wish the players and coaching staff from both Swifts WaiBOP league teams all the best for the coming season. The 1st team did it tough during the first half of 2014 but came good over the closing stages. We’re persevering with a young squad this season and if the improvements continue at the rate they did last year I think we’ll do well. Pushing our reserves into the WaiBOP Championship should aid with this development. Many of our 2014 U-17s now have the chance to play senior mens football at a challenging level and that will help massively with our overall goal of increasing quality and improving depth.

Today we welcome near neighbours Cambridge in both the WaiBOP Premiership and, earlier, the WaiBOP Championship. There’s probably no better way to kick off the Premiership season than with a derby against the league favourites. The fact we have a Swifts v Cambridge double header just increases the fun.

There’s a lot to like about the way the Cambridge club is run. We’ve both suffered relegation from the NRFL in recent years - not a nice thing to have to deal with - but Cambridge used that as a trigger to rebuild and I expect they’ll be back there pretty soon.

Through my involvement with WaiBOP United I have seen first hand how things run at our near neighbours. It’s impressive and it’s no accident Cambridge now loom as hot favourites to win the WaiBOP Premiership. While the scale of our two clubs are quite different, there’s a lot of off-field stuff they do that we should learn from and implement here.

I would also like to use this column to welcome Waikato Stud on board as our new 1st team naming rights sponsor. Mark and the team have been long-term supporters of the club and we thank them for increasing their investment. Hopefully wearing the name of the country’s leading thoroughbred stud on the front of our shirts will signal a return to form for the Swifts.
