Pulau Perhentian is made up of two islands, Pulau Perhentian Besar (Big PerhentianIsland) and Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian Island), separated by a narrowstrait. The Perhentian islands are known for teir hypnotizing azure waters framed bywhite sand and a whole lot of praise from previous visitors.

Youll come to Pulau Perhentians for the same reason youll visit any other beachparadise, except this one wont cost you a bomb. Accommodation options arenumerous and cater to the ones on a shoestring as well as those who want to live alittle like a king; for the latter group, perhaps it will cost a bomb. Activities on theisland are mainly snorkelling, diving, trekking and anything else to do with that invitingdiamond of a sea.

Each of the two islands have somehow carved out a personality of their own.

Perhentian Kecil (pronouched kuh-chil) has more of a party atmosphere than itsneighbour, Besar. And while the view from the main beach is somewhat marred byspeedboats and sea taxis docked at the shore, the simultaneously energetic yet laid-back vibe of Kecil is infectious. Chalets and rooms here are slightly cheaper. Peoplewho choose to stay on Little Perhentian think along the lines of, Im young, Im poor,I wanna relax but I also wanna party.

If youre up for a bit of unwinding, head to Perhentian Besar (pronounced buh-sahr)instead. The options for sleeping are slightly more upscale and resorts there evenhave a spa to loosen up those knots. The best beach on this island is the one in frontof the secluded Perhentian Island Resort. It is not uncommon to see budgeteerstaking advantage of this free beauty by commuting from their respective places ofaccommodation, up a long flight of stairs, across a bridge and down again just tospend a day frolicking in the perfect cyan-turquoise waters here.

Prices for the rooms on each island are dependent on the high and low peakseasons so choose the time to visit wisely if you want to get the most value out ofyour money. The island remains open to visitors almost all year round. BetweenFebruary and October, the monsoon season is away. In December, ferry servicesfrom Kuala Besut jetty will cease. As you can deduce, monsoon season is betweenNovember to January and possibly February.

Like mainland Malaysia, food is cheap and delicious. Be aware that on PerhentianBesar, the only options for eating are resorts restaurants but there is no rule thatsays you can only dine at your own.

It is important to note that the island does not have electricity for most of theafternoon until early evening. Some restaurants, resorts and chalets have their owngenerator and can keep the power going for the whole day, its best to check whenmaking your booking if you require constant electricity.

A speedboat from Kuala Besut jetty is the only way of reaching either island and

going from one to the other is possible with the help of sea taxis.

All in all, Pulau Perhentian presents a great opportunity to savour island life in itsgorgeous backdrop. Its not surprising to find out tha t visitors who can, will stay longerthan they intended.

By the way, the correct pronounciation is per-huhn-tee-ahn - not per-henshen. And

the correct spelling is Perhentian, not 'Perinthian' as we've seen else where.

The two Perhentian Islands are rated as some of the most beautiful islands in theworlda virtual paradise for snorkelling and diving in crystal -clear water or just forlazing on one of the white sandy beaches waiting for the coconuts to drop Pulau Perhentian is located in the South China Sea 25 km from the coast ofKuala Besut. It consists of two islands, Pulau Perhentian Besar and Pulau

Perhentian Kecil. Both islands are surrounded by beautiful palm-fringed sandybeaches andcrystal-clear turquoise-blue sea.

All manner of aquatic life is visible both near and far from the beach such asturtles, sharks, coral and thousands of tropical fish. The interior is covered byungle with a wide variety of species. You can watch monitor lizards, monkeys,geckos, flying squirrels, butterflies and many other types - sometimes right in frontof your chalet. There are no roads and not many paths, so the islands are mainlypeaceful and untouched - so far.Tourism is relatively new to these islands, in fact, the past five years have seenrapid increases in tourism numbers and there are now many new rooms andservices to accommodate guests. Perhentian is fast developing, possibly too fast.But there is still not enough accommodation on public holidays, long weekendsand in the main season July/August. Therefore you should book your room assoon as possible.

Perhentian BesarPerhentian Besar is the bigger one of the two islands(Besar means big in Malay, kecil means small). Theaccommodation is distributed over three very nicebeaches. The Teluk Pauh in the north in front of thePerhentian Island Resort, the main beach with most ofthe resorts at the west coast and Teluk Dalam on theisland's south-east coast.

The best beach on the islands is Teluk Pauh, a beautiful half-moon bay with whitepowdery sand and water as clear as in a

swimming pool. There are good coral around the points on either side. Here you

can snorkel with some turtles, black tip reef sharks and hundreds of reef fish.
