National Families Week A Great Success

National Families Week Event Puckapunyal – 18th May 2017

We had a great turn out by families with approximately 130 participating. The primary school staff had their fund raising supplies down pat which

ran like clock work, with plenty of tasty food hitting the spot. DCO provided a humongous cake to celebrate the National Families

Week occasion. The cake went down well with the families and some returned for

seconds. There were glow sticks for all the kids upon entry and tickets for the door

prizes, along with the free sticker, note pads, balloons and colouring in activity from Families Australia.

The photo station was a big hit with families and kids alike.Families had a great time dancing with their children to the disco beats

and flashing lights.Families left with rosy cheeks from a lot of dancing, full tummies and

smiles. Thanks to all who participated and volunteers for their time, effort and

energy.

Snippets from the Base Information CircularA reminder about Pet Ownership in the PMA

For those living on base, a quick reminder that pets such as cats and dogs must be registered with Mitchell Shire. Whilst it is very tempting to let your well-behaved pet pooch wander off leash, you can only do so in your yard or the designated off-leash area, east of Shell Green cricket ground (oval 5).

When you are in this area, be mindful that it not just for dogs, so maintain control of your dog and be aware of other people enjoying the space.

Please also remember that Vic road rules apply in the base, so you can’t just walk along the road. You need to the footpaths or off-road grassed/dirt areas whilst walking, not the roads.

Remember not to wander into the restricted operational areas of the base, which were mentioned in the previous Boomerang (Mont St Quentin Road; Blamey Road (at intersection with Bardia Blvd); Blamey Road (at intersection with Passchendaele Pde) and Malaya Road (Westerly direction from Married Quarters to Morobe Rd). PAAB Grant apps close 30 June

The Puckapunyal Area Amenities Board (PAAB) is accepting grant applications from community groups and associations in the PMA that will enhance the quality of life of the PMA community.

Disposal of MQ Green WasteMQ residents are reminded to

dispose of green waste at the green waste site, not on vacant blocks or over your back fence.

The base green waste site is at the corner of Mont St Quentin and Salamaua Roads (adjacent to JLU(V)-P).

It can be accessed Mon – Fri 0900 –1600 h (including public holidays), and Sat – Sun 1200 – 1600 h. Parking vehicles in the MQ

Readers are reminded that vehicles within the PMA have to be parked in areas specifically set aside for such a purpose (ie the side of the road, your driveway, etc). Nobody is permitted to park on grassed areas such as the vacant blocks and nature strips throughout the married quarter.

If you have friends or family coming over to visit on the weekend or school holidays, make sure they do the right thing too.

Vet Verbal's - Pet Arthritis

One in five dogs suffer from pain and disability caused by arthritis, with the majority of dogs going undiagnosed and untreated due to the pet owner’s innocent lack of understanding.

The key is to ensure early diagnosis and treatment so that you and your pets are prepared to cope with the arrival of winter and a drop in temperature – when the signs of arthritis are more obvious and the pain intensifies.

You are best placed to identify the early stages of arthritis as you and your family know your dog’s personality and can recognise subtle changes to his or her “normal” physical ability.

Signs that a dog may be suffering from arthritis include:

• Reluctance to walk or play• Limping

• Stiffness of joints in the morning or after sleep

• Licking or biting of joints• Difficulty in rising from a resting

position• Difficulty in climbing stairs• Change in personality – less happy,

sometimes aggressive or irritableOnce a thorough check of the dog is

undertaken, we can take a comprehensive approach to managing arthritis.

The management program may include –• Weight loss, • Exercise and enhanced mobility,• Nutritional supplements

(glucosamine), • Injections to block ongoing joint

destruction and anti-inflammatories for pain relief.

• Providing soft bedding away from draughts is also necessary.

If you think your dog may be suffering from arthritis, please make an appointment (insert phone number) to come and see us at Seymour Central Vets for a check-up or mention it at your next visit.

Avoid using human arthritis medications as dogs don’t always tolerate human drugs and side effects can occur

ENJOY YOUR PETS!!

So Much on Offer at DaylesfordDaylesford is a spa town located in the

foothills of the Great Dividing Range, within the Shire of Hepburn, Victoria, Australia, approximately 115 kilometres north-west of Melbourne

Daylesford and Hepburn Springs have many things to do, see and explore, are very well known and visited often because of the mineral springs that anyone can freely drink and bottle anytime.

The mineral springs were discovered over one hundred and fifty years ago and they are just as popular now as they were then.

Below are just a few things to take in on your trip and this is just the tip of the iceberg as there is so much to do and experience for couples and families. There is plenty of accommodation to suit all budgets, so why not make a weekend of it.

The Convent:Nestled on the crest of Wombat Hill Botanical

Gardens, over-looking Daylesford. A feast for the senses, the gallery is more than a three level haven of fine art in an historic 19th century mansion. With its decadent retail areas, Mediterranean restaurant, relaxing Altar bar and lounge, restored chapel, nuns museum, all surrounded by six acres of stunning gardens.

The Boathouse Cafe and RestaurantLocated on the banks of our iconic Lake Daylesford

and with exquisite water views from any vantage point, the Boathouse Restaurant offers a sophisticated venue for breakfast and lunch, 7 days a week. You can take in the beautiful views from our warm and cosy indoor dining area for winter catch ups and our outdoor deck and seating area during the warmer months, it's the perfect place for a glass of wine or a meal with family and friends.

Wombat Hill Botanical GardensThe Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens are an

outstanding and enchanting place to visit anytime of the day or year. The gardens are built on top of an extinct volcano known as Wombat Hill which can be seen from most locations in Daylesford. The scenic driveway was originally built for the 'horse and cart' and of course 'now days' it is used by cars, the original rotunda was used as a bandstand for regular entertainment.

Daylesford Day SpaIn an area renowned for its mineral water springs, spas

and health treatments, Daylesford Day Spa stands out from the crowd.

Centrally located in a converted heritage building, Daylesford Day Spa creates a nature-based experience for every client. Offering a range of therapies including Jurlique Facials, Aromatherapy Spas, Body Wraps, and a wide variety of Massages.

DFA and Education Assistance Scheme

Families of Australia (DFA) is aministerially-appointed group of

volunteers that represents the viewsof Defence families. Its aim is to

inform Government and Defence onthe needs of the family.

Our goal is to ensure quality oflife for all Defence families by

providing a recognised forum fortheir views and by reporting, makingrecommendations and influencing

policy that directly affects families. Inturn, this enhances the capability of

the Australian Defence Force.

Defence families can contact theirlocal DFA delegate to represent

them regarding an issue concerningfamily matters.

Education Assistance Scheme (EAS)(Tutoring Support)

Due to the posting cycle many children from Defence families face changes of schools and/or school systems. Education assistance is available to assist families to deal with educational problems that may arise in the 18 months following the move.

In your new locality, assistance with extra tuition costs can be made available to primary and secondary school students.

The extra tuition has to be provided by a properly licensed or recognised education service provider/tutor.

The school principal must certify on the application form that the tutoring is required. It is suggested that you allow the children to settle into their new school and wait for teachers to make assessments before applying for EAS.

For information please ring the Defence family Helpline 1800 624 608.

Other forms of Education Assistance are available for year 9-12 students and tertiary students who need to remain in the old locality for educational continuity.

This information is also available on the DCO web site at www.defence.gov.au/dco.

If you have any queries or need advice on other educational matters please contact the Regional Education Liaison Officer (REDLO), through the Defence Family Helpline.

Quick and Easy Dinner

Ingredients2 tbsp olive oil1 onion, diced500g minced beef4 cloves garlic, crushed1 tbsp Italian herbs1/2 tsp salt1/2 tsp pepper, freshly ground1 tin (410g) crushed tomatoes1 bottle (690g) passata (Italian cooking sauce)3 cups (750ml) water8 dried lasagne sheets, broken into pieces250g cottage cheese250g shredded mozarellabasil leaves (to garnish)parmesan cheese, grated (to serve)

MethodIn a large frying pan, heat olive oil

over a medium heat and fry onions until translucent.

Add minced beef to the pan and break up well with a wooden spoon until browned.

Add garlic, herbs, salt and pepper, crushed tomatoes, passata and water. Stir well and bring to the boil. Add lasagne and stir well, cover and cook over a medium heat for 20 minutes, stirring every few minutes to ensure that the lasagne does not stick together.

Spoon cottage cheese into the pan and gently stir. Heap piles of mozarella on top of the mixture, cover and remove from heat. Leave to sit for 5 minutes or until melted. Top with fresh basil leaves and serve with grated parmesan cheese.

NOTES:You can use pork and veal

mince instead of beef mince for authentic Italian flavours.

The lasagne sheets really want to stick together in this recipe. Make sure that you keep an eye on them while they are cooking and seperate them with a spoon. This recipe was created by Jennifer Cheung for Kidspot

One-pan lasagneIf you really love lasagne but don't want to wait hours and have a sink full of dishes then

this recipe is for you. It has all the delicious flavours of lasagne but this recipe is quick and easy! Just the thing for the school holidays when the kids are hungry and you don't want to spend all day in the kintchen.
