2018 TERM 3 WEEK 10
CATHOLIC LIFE AND MISSION…
This Sunday we continue to read from the Gospel of Mark (MK 9:38-43, 45, 47-48). In the
Gospel reading, the disciple John questions Jesus about an unknown person who was driving out demons in Jesus’ name. John’s question may have been motivated by jealousy as he and
the other disciples have previously compared themselves to others who seem to have
greater healing power.
The disciples observed that the unknown person invoked Jesus’ name and was successful in his healing efforts. This unknown healer recognised the power of Jesus’ name, yet he was
not a follower of Jesus. In his reply to his disciples, Jesus acknowledges that deeds of faith can precede the words of faith. He also teaches that the disciples should not be reluctant to
share Jesus’ healing powers with others.
The second part of Gospel contains a strong message for those who share the responsibility of nurturing faith. It reminds us that faith is a lifelong journey toward God. We don’t always
get it all or even get it right. But we pray for the grace to acknowledge and build upon even the smallest signs of faith, in ourselves and in others. There are plenty of obstacles that
might prevent the growth of faith. Let us pray that we are not contributing to the obstacles that might hinder another person’s faith in Jesus.

PLENARY COUNCIL 2020
Together, we are on a journey of listening to God by listening to one another. All people are invited to
engage in Listening and Dialogue encounters - which are an open and inclusive experience of listening,
dialogue and discernment about the future of the Catholic Church in Australia.
WHAT DO YOU THINK GOD IS ASKING OF US IN AUSTRALIA AT THIS TIME?
Everyone's experience of faith and the Church is unique and it is important that the Plenary Council hear
responses from as many people as possible. Your voice is important. Speak boldly and with passion, listen
with an open and humble heart. With faith and guided by God's Holy Spirit, we journey together, toward
the future.
Please don't miss the opportunity to be heard and to voice your opinions.
Please contact Mrs Stephanie Fatone ([email protected]) or Mrs Amanda Dillon
([email protected]) if you are interested to find out more.

DEBATING NEWS!
On Tuesday 25th September, the SJB debating team completed in their 4th debate. The debate topic
was “Should the Government Censor the Internet?” We had the challenge of arguing that the
Government shouldn’t censor the internet. The team all worked extremely hard to prepare their
debate, giving up numerous break times. In debating, the hardest challenge is rebutting but the SJB
rebuttals were excellent. They were strong, well thought out and they executed them
effectively. This debate results were the closest we had experienced; with only 1 point
difference. Although we didn’t win this debate, the students are to be commended on their
dedication and professionalism.
Throughout the year, Lian, Marco, Will, Charlie and Ellie have all committed their time and effort
into researching, preparing and practising their debates. They consistently represented the school
with pride and should be congratulated for their efforts and commitment. Well done!

Year 3 and 4 Soccer/Netball Gala Day
On Tuesday the 18th September the Year 3 and 4 teachers had the privilege of accompanying the Year 3 and 4 students
to the Gala Day at Baker Park, Wyong. We were blessed with excellent weather and it was great to see the children
given the opportunity to play anywhere between 5 and 7 games throughout the day. It was especially pleasing to see some
try a game that they had not previously played. During the day the children demonstrated good behaviour and competed
fairly with many teams having quite successful days.
Thanks must also go to the various parent helpers who helped manage teams and also to those who gave up their time to
support the children. Well done SJB.

It’s been a busy term for Year 3 with 2 excursions! Earlier this term, year 3 went to Sydney to take part in The Rocks Walking Tour as part of History and Geography units.
We got to see how people used to live in the past and how the area has changed over time. We also visited the Ken Done Art Gallery and enjoyed seeing the artworks up close of one of
Australia’s most well known artists.
This week, we walked to our Church and had a “behind the scenes” tour and found out lots of interesting information and history about not only this Church, but our Parish. We also enjoyed walking around and seeing different parts of Woy Woy, including the different services and facilities that we have so we can use this in Geography to compare
to a location in the country. Thank you to the teachers and parents who attended on both these excursions and to Mary from the Parish who shared her love of our Church with us.
LIBRARY CORNER
Recently in Library, Fernando displayed his Bookworm house, made to celebrate Book Week. Thanks Fernando – what a great
idea for a Book Week competition next year.
Overdue books
Some students have library books that are overdue - some very overdue. These books need to be
returned as quickly as possible. Notices for overdue books were sent out this week. If a book has
been lost we do appreciate a contribution toward replacing it (usually $10). If the book is new or cost
more, the replacement cost would be higher. Please understand that every effort is made to ensure
the overdue notices are correct.
If however, you believe a book has been returned, please contact me as soon as possible
so that your child’s borrowing can continue. Thanks so much for your assistance with this.
Why is it so important to keep reading to our children as long as possible?
An article by Margaret Merga (from Murdoch University) outlines why we should keep reading to our
kids, even after they are able to read independently. Well worth a read!
One way to begin sharing books with your child is to start with your own favourite books. Remember
to read throughout the holiday break to avoid the ‘reading slide’. Years 3-6 are allowed to borrow
Library books over the break.

this local business.
Thank you to everyone who volunteers to assist in the canteen. You are very much
appreciated. If you would like to become a volunteer please let me know by either
emailing the school ([email protected]) or come in and say “hello” after 8.30am.
Fridays are particularly busy so any help given will be welcomed – even if your assistance
is only for an hour or two, say at 9am and 1pm.
