1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Europe and the former Soviet Union have long histories in mining and a great variety in the scale of and opportunity in, the mining sectors in each country. This report incorporates survey responses from decision-makers across 23 countries, which have been grouped into five different regions: Western Europe; Southern Europe; Eastern Europe; Scandinavia and the former Soviet Union.

The largest region is the former Soviet Union, which is dominated by Russia, ahead of the Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Russia is a global leader in several products including diamonds, nickel, copper, coal, gold, tin and bauxite. Ukraine is rich in ferrous minerals with iron ore and manganese dominating mineral production and is also a large producer of coal and ilmenite. In Kazakhstan the main commodities include coal, copper, gold, iron ore, silver, uranium and zinc. Armenia is the only other country included in our survey from this region.

Within Western Europe we cover the UK, Germany, France and Spain, which collectively have 142 operating mines, according to the Mining Intelligence Center, with the largest share of these in the UK (78), followed by Spain (42), then Germany (25).

Within Scandinavia we include responses from companies in Sweden, Finland and Norway. Sweden has Europe’s largest mining industry, rich with base metals, gold and iron ore, and very large operating copper mines and zinc mines. Finland is one of Europe’s largest producers in gold, nickel, chromite, copper and zinc, with a number of mining projects in the development phase. Norway has a significant industrial minerals industry with stone, graphite, olivine and calcite, and also produces substantial levels of coal.

In Southern Europe, Turkey is best known for being a strong producer of coal and base metals. The majority of Turkey’s operating mines produce iron ore, coal, copper, gold and zinc. Greece has a number of operational mines, which mainly produce coal. Other operations in the region produces gold, lead, nickel, silver and zinc. Other countries covered in our survey were Cyprus and Macedonia.

Lastly, Eastern Europe contains some mineral rich nations represented in the survey by Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Albania and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Poland is one of Europe’s top coal and copper producers, with the majority of its operating mines producing coal. Other projects in the region cover silver, zinc, lead and nickel. Romania and Slovakia are large producers of coal, with the majority of the operating mines producing the commodity. There are a large number of exploration projects currently underway, looking at deposits of gold, lead, copper, uranium and zinc.

Between November 2014 and January 2015, Timetric surveyed general managers, mine managers, procurement managers and other decision makers involved in European mining operations, including those in the former Soviet Union. The survey primarily assessed heavy mobile equipment, although respondents were also asked about their practices and preferences in areas such as mining software, technology and maintenance.

Overall patterns in the data revealed:

Customer priorities in supplier selection are product quality and availability of parts

Results from the survey conducted found that respondents rated ‘product quality/reliability’ as the most important factor, followed by ‘availability of replacement parts’. The third-most-important factor for respondents was ‘on-time delivery and installation of equipment’.

‘Lowest price’ and ‘breadth of supplier’s range’ were the lowest-rated factors in terms of importance.

Figure 1: Average Ratings for Key Factors When Choosing an Equipment Supplier – Highest- and Lowest-Rated Criteria, 2014/15

Suppliers perform well, but customers have lower levels of satisfaction in key areas

Respondents were asked to rate the performance of their current largest supplier for each factor: from one for very dissatisfied to 10 for very satisfied. Suppliers rated relatively well overall, particularly in terms of ‘product quality and reliability’, ‘complete service solution (lifecycle management)’ and ‘operator's feedback on operating comforts’.

Comparing the key factors in choosing a supplier (importance) against the actual performance (satisfaction) – based on the respondent’s current main supplier – the survey showed that the areas where supplier performance exceeded their importance rating were areas that they considered of lesser importance. When looking at the top four factors, performance ratings were lower than importance ratings, although were still relatively high.

Respondents were also asked to nominate leading suppliers according to equipment type. Within the heavy mobile equipment market, Caterpillar and Komatsu dominated opinion. Sandvik and Atlas Copco were the leading suppliers in the drilling market. For crushing, grinding and processing equipment requirements, Metso rated the highest amongst the respondents followed by Sandvik.

On-time delivery and a company’s account managers have a significant impact on the selection process

Respondents were asked about how their current supplier differentiated themselves from their competitors during the selection process. The most frequent differentiating factors were in relation to a company’s logistical reputation and knowledge of the company representatives, with ‘better track record/expectations of delivery on time’ being cited by 82% of respondents. It indicates the importance respondents have placed on reputation and the ability to deliver goods/services on time.

This was followed by ‘demonstrated their product was superior’, ‘better understanding of your needs’ (81% for both) and ‘better timing of contact’ (80%). This indicates the importance that company representatives can have in the generation of new business and in maintaining successful relationships with clients.

The least frequent differentiating factor was ‘better price’ with only 57% voting ‘yes’. The second- and third-least differentiating factors were ‘better payment terms’ and ‘gave more benefits for same/lower price’. While costs are a constant issue for many mining companies, results from the survey show that initial costs for equipment are not major differentiating factors.

Customers are happy with their current supplier but are open to change

In trying to understand the potential for switching manufacturers, respondents were asked if they would choose a different supplier, given the choice again, and whether they intend to switch suppliers in the next five years. It was noted that there is a strong belief amongst respondents that their choice of supplier was the correct one, with 84% of respondents agreeing they would choose the same supplier if they had the choice again. However, when asked if they would switch to a different supplier within five years, 31% expect to change.

Product quality/reliability is the most identified area for improvement

The top three areas identified for improvement by respondents are ‘product quality/reliability’, ‘ability to support cost reduction/minimization’ and ‘after sales service’. These factors can be attributed to the downturn in the mining industry. Focus has shifted to reducing operating costs and improving equipment utilization. Supporting cost reduction is an area in which most companies are underperforming.

CUSTOMER PRIORITIES IN SUPPLIER SELECTION

2 CUSTOMER PRIORITIES IN SUPPLIER SELECTION

2.1 Introduction

This section identifies the priorities of buyers and decision-makers when purchasing heavy mobile mining equipment, by comparing 16 different factors covering pricing, products, company and services. In covering a range of respondents from different mine types, regions, commodities and roles – including procurement and mine management – variations across the market have been identified.

2.2 Key Factors when Choosing a Supplier

Respondents were asked to rate the importance of key criteria when choosing an equipment supplier on a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 was of very minor importance and 10 was critical. The key findings were:

• ‘Product quality and reliability’ was clearly the highest-rated factor, followed by the ‘availability of replacement parts’ and ‘on-time delivery and installation’. These factors have consistently been rated highly in Timetric surveys by miners in other regions, such as Australia, Asia and Africa.

• ‘Company reputation and past experience’ also rated very highly amongst respondents. Together with ‘operator’s feedback on operating comforts’, these rounded out the top five factors.

• ‘Lowest price’ was rated least important, a few places below ‘lowest total life costs’. This shows that the complete lifetime cost of a machine is considered more important than the initial outlay required. Utilization rates of equipment are critical, so producers prefer to pay a premium for reliable equipment than risk that reliability for a lower price.

• ‘Breadth of supplier’s product range’ was rated as having a low importance (second to ‘lowest price’), due to specific requirements in mining equipment. Whilst suppliers such as Komatsu and Caterpillar can provide the majority of equipment as they have a sufficient product range to satisfy specific equipment requirements, customers generally do not place a significant emphasis on this.

2.3 Key Factors when Choosing a Supplier – By Mine Type

Variations were discerned based on different respondent characteristics, such as the commodity mined, the type of mining and its location. When comparing respondents from underground and surface mining operations many factors had similar ratings across surface and underground respondents. The main differences occurred where underground respondents gave higher ratings than their surface counterparts for ‘breadth of supplier’s product range’, ‘product matching to needs and level of customization available’ and ‘product training available’. These factors are in line with the specialized mining equipment required in underground operations.

Figure 9 outlines average ratings for all key factors when choosing an equipment supplier by region. Product quality/reliability’ scored the highest rating factor overall and the highest factor for four of the five regions. The exception was Eastern Europe where the equal highest rating factors were ‘operator’s feedback on operator comforts’ and ‘on-time delivery and installation of equipment’.

‘Product matching to needs’ had a much higher importance rating for respondents within Eastern Europe, in comparison to those respondents in Scandinavia which gave a rating more than 1.5 points lower than those from Eastern Europe. Eastern European respondents also placed a much higher importance on the ‘opportunity to develop long-term partnerships’.

Scandinavian respondents, whilst least concerned with price, rated total life costs relatively high, with this factor also relatively high amongst respondents from the former Soviet Union.

2.5 Key Factors when Choosing a Supplier – By Commodity

This section analyses variations in responses by commodity groups, according to the following four groups:

• Base Metals • Precious Metals • Coal • Iron Ore

Figure 10 and Figure 11 below outlines the key factors for each of the four commodity groups in the survey. Whilst there are some factors that are important across all four commodities, some are specific to a single commodity.

Three of the four highest-rated factors for coal respondents are supported by the nature of extracting coal. For example, ‘average total operating hours of equipment’ is an important factor for coal respondents, and this is due to the use of continuous mining machinery deployed in coal mines. ‘Company reputation and past experiences’ was rated the same as total operating equipment hours. ‘Product matching to needs and level of customization’ was also rated highly due to the nature of the equipment required to extract coal. Equipment will need to be tailored to suit the mining specific technique used on site and for certain underground environments.

Both iron ore and coal respondents placed high importance on ‘average total operating hours of equipment’ which also connects with the other important factors nominated, ‘local/on-site service and repair capabilities of the OEM’ and ‘complete service solution (lifecycle management)’. This outlines the importance these respondents placed on maximizing equipment utilization by focusing on the supplier’s capabilities to service and repair equipment on site.

2.6 Key Factors when Choosing a Supplier – By Company Size

There are four company size categories within this survey based on the revenue of the respondents’ companies. These categories are outlined below:

• Below US$100 million • Between US$100 million and US$1 billion • Between US$1-10 billion • Above US$10 billion

Once respondents were divided between their respective company sizes, the top five factors from Figure 7 featured again throughout the top factors for each company size segment. Figure 12 shows six factors with the greatest variations in importance across the different company size categories.

The largest companies earning above US$10 billion gave lower ratings of importance across four of the six factors but rated ‘energy efficiency’ as the highest factor of importance. This factor did not rate highly with the other company segments. For the companies earning between US$100 million to US$1 billion, ‘operator’s feedback on operating comforts’ featured in their top factors yet did not feature amongst other company segments.

2.7 Summary

When choosing a supplier, buyers focus on quality, reliability, matching equipment to specific needs, and the ability to provide parts in a timely manner. Other attributes that respondents rate highly include the supplier’s ability to provide servicing and repairs either locally or on-site. Maintenance and service costs were also mentioned.

Smaller companies in the survey were more focused on factors relating to parts and services. In contrast, the largest companies place significant importance on services provided, such as repairs, installation and lifecycle management. The largest companies also rated ‘energy efficiency’ higher, which can support cost reduction with an increasing impact as fleet sizes increase.

3 SUPPLIER PERFORMANCE AND KEY SUCCESS FACTORS

3.1 Introduction

This section identifies how well suppliers performed in terms of meeting customer needs. Supplier performance is analyzed according to customer satisfaction, using the same criteria as in Chapter 2. Caterpillar, Atlas Copco and Sandvik were identified as the main suppliers of heavy mobile equipment by 74% of the respondents. The remaining suppliers fall into the ‘Other’ category, consisting of 14 different companies that include Joy Global, Volvo and Komatsu. The three companies are analyzed based on their performance ratings for each criterion versus the relative importance for respondents.

Ratings were only taken for a respondents’ main heavy equipment supplier. Respondents also identified who they felt were the leading manufacturers and brands for a range of different mining equipment.

This section also outlines which factors were differentiators for the decision makers when selecting the current main supplier, thereby highlighting where suppliers were able to set themselves apart from the competition and what was most significant in them winning the contract.

3.2 Overall Supplier Performance

This section analyzes the differences between the importance respondents assigned to particular criteria when choosing an equipment supplier, as well as their satisfaction with their current primary equipment supplier. Figure 13 amalgamates all responses, comparing the average in terms of both importance and supplier performance.

• Respondents were generally satisfied with their suppliers across most factors, rating each factor between 6 (moderate satisfaction) and 8 (high level of satisfaction). Satisfaction ratings were not always in line with the importance of each factor, however; that is to say, where importance was highest, the level of satisfaction was often relatively low when compared with other factors. In contrast, there were factors where satisfaction was high, but the factor was relatively unimportant, such as the ‘breadth of product range’.

• For two of the most highly-rated factors – ‘product quality/reliability’ and ‘availability of spare parts’ – there is a gap between average performance and rated importance. As seen throughout the survey, improvement is needed in these areas. ‘Product quality/reliability’ commonly had the greatest disparity between importance and performance.

• The performance/importance variation was much higher for ‘lowest price’ and ‘breadth of product range’ however these factors were the two lowest rated factors in terms of importance. Suppliers consistently performed better for these two factors than the ratings of importance given by the respondents.

3.3 Satisfaction Ratings by Region

Figure 14 compares satisfaction ratings by region, illustrating those respondents from Eastern Europe to be the most satisfied with their main suppliers. Their suppliers were rated the highest in 7 of the 16 factors.

Suppliers in the former Soviet Union received the lowest ratings of performance in 7 of the 16 factors, with Scandinavian suppliers receiving the lowest ratings in 6 factors. These low ratings provide opportunities for new suppliers to capitalize on weaknesses such as in maintenance and service costs, product training or lowest total life and potentially take market share.

3.6 Leading Manufacturers by Equipment Type

Respondents were asked to nominate the two leading manufacturers (first and second) for different types of mining equipment, regardless of their own main supplier. The results indicate the businesses considered the leading manufacturers for each type of equipment.

• Caterpillar dominated the following heavy equipment categories: trucks, excavators, loaders, dozers and shovels, followed by Komatsu. Volvo, Hitachi, Sandvik and Atlas Copco were the other-mentioned manufacturers, with Komatsu particularly prominent in the loaders market.

• Atlas Copco and Sandvik were most frequently nominated as the two leading suppliers in the drills market. Atlas Copco had the highest number of respondents placing them as the leading company with Sandvik having the highest number of respondents who nominated them as the second leading company. Tamrock featured in this category even though it was acquired by Sandvik in 1997.

• P&H was mentioned for excavators and shovels. P&H is a subsidiary of Joy Global Inc, but Joy Global did not feature in this section of the survey.

3.7 How Suppliers Differentiated Themselves

In order to understand what may have persuaded decision makers to choose their main supplier over other options, they were asked in what areas their main supplier differentiated themselves from the rest of the market during the selection process. Respondents were asked to consider a series of factors, selecting those where the supplier clearly differentiated themselves during the purchasing process. It is important to note that where the respondent said ‘no’ it does not mean it was not a factor in their choice, just that it was not a differentiating factor when choosing this supplier against others being considered.

• This section illustrates the importance of the manufacturers’ logistics systems, and the representatives they employ, with 82% of respondents citing ‘better track record/expectations of delivery on time’, followed by 81% citing ‘demonstrated their product was superior’ and ‘better understanding of your needs’, and 80% choosing ‘better timing of contact’ as the top differentiating factors when selecting their current main supplier.

• As Figure 26 demonstrates, most respondents felt that their current suppliers differentiated themselves in most factors, with more than 70% of respondents nominating their supplier differentiated themselves in eight of the 12 factors.

• Suppliers were less likely to differentiate themselves in terms of cost. The three lowest differentiating factors were all cost related, including ‘gave more benefits for same/lower price’, ‘better payment terms’ and the lowest was for ‘better price’.

• Suppliers with reputations for high prices were less likely to differentiate themselves on ‘price’, with Caterpillar, for example, having a lower average share of respondents nominating ‘better price’ as a factor.

4.3 Customer Ratings of Main Supplier Relative to Peer Group

On a scale of one to 10, with one being far inferior, five being on par and 10 being far superior, respondents were asked to rate their main supplier relative to other mining equipment suppliers in their market. This question aims to gauge buyers’ views on how the manufacturer they chose compares to other options available, and where buyers feel there are still better options. Figure 31 groups responses given to the three suppliers, Caterpillar, Atlas Copco and Sandvik and groups responses according to one and two being ‘far inferior’, three and four being ‘inferior’, five being ‘on par’, six to eight being ‘superior’ and nine and 10 being ‘far superior’.

• The three main suppliers, Caterpillar, Atlas Copco and Sandvik, were all rated as either ‘far superior’ or ‘superior’ by more than 80% of respondents.

• Caterpillar had the highest share, of the three main suppliers, of respondents considering them to be ‘far superior’. While Sandvik had the highest share of respondents who considered them either ‘far superior’ or ‘superior’.

4.4 Anticipated Switching Within the Next Five Years

Respondents were asked if they anticipate switching suppliers within the next five years. This is a typical lifecycle for the majority of mining equipment, since companies tend to depreciate equipment over five years, at that point making the decision to rebuild, replace or upgrade.

• Respondents were somewhat divided on whether they would switch suppliers within the next five years. There is a slight inclination to remain with their current suppliers, with 40% of respondents probably or definitely not switching, compared with 31% probably or definitely switching.

Attitudes across the different regions on switching to a different supplier within the next five years show miners in Southern Europe most likely to switch, with 56% of respondents anticipating a move.

It is interesting to note that Southern European respondents listed ‘lead time/speed to deliver and install equipment’ and ‘on-time delivery and installation of equipment’ in the top five important factors when choosing a supplier. However, there were significant disparities when performance ratings were compared. This shows some dissatisfaction with the performance of their current supplier/manufacturers, contributing to the large share of respondents planning to make a switch. Satisfaction ratings across the factors for choosing a supplier are outlined in Figure 14.

4.5 Key Areas for Product and Service Improvement

In this section, respondents were asked to rank, in order, the top three areas where suppliers of heavy equipment need to improve. Figure 34 displays the results, showing the total number of selections by ranking.

• Overall, ‘product quality and reliability’ was by far the most frequently chosen area for improvement. Product quality and reliability is the most important factor when choosing a supplier and, although the leading suppliers were all rated highly for the quality of their products, there remains room for improvement as they each received ratings of performance lower than the associated ratings of importance.

• The ‘ability to support cost reduction/minimization’ was selected as one of the top three areas for improvement by just under half of respondents. The decline in commodity prices over the last two years has driven a greater focus on cost reduction across all aspects of mine-site operations.

• ‘After-sales service’ was ranked third. • ‘Punctuality/on-time delivery’, ‘local/on-site service/repair capabilities’ and ‘product training’ all ranked

lowest in voting combinations.

Figure 34: Areas for Improvement for Equipment Suppliers, 2014/15

Source: Timetric Mining Equipment, Technology and Services Survey, H2 2014 and H1 2015 © Timetric

Respondents were also asked if they wished to add further commentary on areas for improvement. Respondents were concerned with the energy efficiency ratings of the equipment, the ability of data capture and also the lack automation of some equipment.

In Figure 35, the results are broken down into the five main regions: Eastern Europe, Western Europe, Southern Europe, the former Soviet Union and Scandinavia.

• There are some clear similarities between respondents in Eastern, Western and Southern Europe, and Scandinavia. ‘Product quality/reliability’ features as the top factor in each of the four regions, with ‘ability to support cost reduction’ ranked second.

• Respondents from the former Soviet Union outlined different areas for improvement. As with the other regions, ‘product quality/reliability’ received the highest number of votes as the top area for improvement, however it was only equal third in terms of total votes. ‘Ability to support cost reduction’ and ‘after-sales service’ received the highest number of votes for areas of improvement.

When the results were broken down based on commodity, a similar pattern emerged throughout. ‘Product quality/reliability’ was consistently the top area for improvement. There was also seen to be a clear need to improve support for cost reduction amongst most commodity groups, although this rated relatively low for respondents producing iron ore.

5 ACTION POINTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

During the current downturn in mining around the world, suppliers will need to improve their performance across a range of factors in order to succeed in retaining and expanding their market share. Many of the suppliers that feature heavily throughout the survey are well established in the industry and are unlikely to lose a significant share of the market, however, opportunities in Europe and the former Soviet Union have arisen in areas in which customers have outlined a lack of satisfaction with their supplier.

• Whilst the large suppliers performed well in terms of product quality and reliability, respondents still feel improvements can be made in these areas. Demonstrating that their product was superior was a key areas of differentiation across the region and it is vital companies are able to provide high quality equipment if they are to succeed in this market.

• The ability to support cost reductions was outlined as very important to customers, particularly those in the former Soviet Union. Suppliers of heavy equipment should support customers to achieve cost savings whether through improved utilization, diagnostics monitoring, personnel training or energy efficiency.

• Another issue that suppliers need to address is inventory and after sales service. The availability of parts and after sales service featured amongst the main areas in need of improvement by suppliers.

Current and prospective suppliers can also improve their performance in Europe and FSU by paying particular attention to customer relationships.

• Apart from product quality and the ability to support cost minimization, companies in the survey outlined that improvements are needed in ‘after sales services’, ‘knowledge and capability of local sales representatives’ and ‘ability to provide lifecycle management’. These issues can be addressed by hiring the correct people with the right skill sets, or by improving the training provided to current employees. Suppliers can also provide the right equipment and tools to their employees, in order to improve the lifecycle management services they offer to mining companies.

7.1 Survey Background

Between November 2014 and January 2015, Timetric surveyed general managers, mine managers, procurement managers and other decision makers involved in European mining operations. The survey was conducted principally via telephone interviews, with a small number of email responses. The aim of the survey was to delve into the mining equipment, technology and services sector, and examine a range of issues such as the performance of equipment suppliers, maintenance, parts, technology and patterns.

Each respondent was asked up to 40 questions and sub-questions, with certain questions specifically for equipment purchasers.

The following sections provide a breakdown of the responses given and details the equipment provided by the main suppliers.

7.2 Analysis of the Survey Sample

• The former Soviet Union, Scandinavia and Western Europe had equally the largest shares of respondents, each accounting for 25% of the total pool.

• Some 40% of respondents were based in surface mining operations, 37% in underground and the remaining 23% at combined surface and underground mines.

7.3 Equipment Sourced from Main Supplier

Respondents were asked to list all types of equipment obtained from their previously nominated main supplier. This question was open-ended, and respondents were neither prompted nor asked to choose from a designated list of equipment.

• Over 50% of respondents nominated trucks as the main equipment sourced from their main supplier, with loaders, excavators and drills rounding up the top four. These shows the reliance respondents have on their equipment manufacturers as they use machinery considered the backbone of many mining operations.

• The results also indicate that the bulk of a mine site’s mining equipment consists of trucks, loaders, excavators and drills, with one excavator/loader able to serve multiple trucks.
