By Tanya Randall “I’m still in disbelief,” said multiple Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualier and newly crowned San Antonio Rodeo Champion Barrel Racer Angie Meadors. “It was awesome.” The victory at the San Antonio Rodeo, held Feb. 9-25 at the AT&T Center, was worth $18,340, and it moved her to 5th in the WPRA World Standings. Unlike other rodeos, San Antonio was held in a bracket-style format with each of the 50 contestants run- ning in three-run sets. The four high-money earners in each set advanced to a two-run seminals, with the top four advancing the lucrative nals. The purse was guaranteed at $131,000 and contes- tants paid no entry fees. On nals’ night, Meadors was walking down the tunnel to get ready for her run when she found out that her boyfriend Kolin VonAhn won the team roping. “The night was already set,” she said upon learning of VonAhn’s the victory. “I just want to go make a solid run and try to get a check. I wasn’t even thinking about winning. I was just thinking about getting done and being able to go celebrate with him.” Although Bugs made what Meadors said was his worst rst barrel of the rodeo, the duo clocked a 13.87 to win the $12,445 rst-place check in the nals. Bugs’ owners Trip DuPerier and his daughter Callie, the 2010 WPRA Junior World Champion, were on hand for the victory. It was the rst time that the DuPeriers had ever met Meadors in person. “I was so happy I nally got to meet them,” said Meadors, who is sponsored by Formula 707, Purina, Cowgirl Tuff and MGM Grand. “I nally got to put a face with the voice on the phone. That was the rst time he’d ever watched me run Bugs in person, and I win their hometown rodeo. It was really cool too because Jana Bean was also running another horse of his, so he had two horses in the Finals.” Initially, Meadors had planned to run Mulberry Canyon Moon, because the mare had more experience in buildings than Bugs. However, the decision was made to take Mulberry to the reproductive center to get her embryo obligations fullled and out of the way. “I really didn’t know how Bugs would work,” said Meadors. “I ran (Frenchmans) Jester my rst run at San Antonio and ran Bugs the rest of the time. That pen worked really well for him. He got better and better with every run.” Meadors was also entered at San Angelo, a three-hour hike to the west, at the same time. She made her rst two runs at San Antonio and then headed to San Angelo for barrel slack rst thing in the morning. She returned to San Antonio that evening for her nal run in her set. “I was making the short at San Angelo, but somebody bumped me out the last day,” she said. “It was kind of a blessing. By Tanya Randall WPRA Rookie Reiney Hatch had a lot to celebrate on the long road home to Ukiah, Calif., from the La Fiesta de los Vaqueros in Tucson, Ariz. The 19-year-old college sophomore left the storied event, held Feb. 18-26, with rodeo championship worth $7,740. “It was a really good weekend,” said Hatch, who made the all night drive home to be back in time for Monday morning classes at Mendocino College. She’s a business management major and hopes to get her real estate licenses as well. In Tucson, Hatch rode her 9-year-old gelding Sizzle To The Touch, whom she bought out of Louisiana as a 4-year-old. “My fi rst run, I was a little nervous,” she said. “A lot of times in a big pen he’ll really get to running too hard. Sometimes I’ll get too much of a hold of him and he’ll run by a barrel, but I rode him just like I should. That run gave me a lot of confi dence. “On my second run, his fi rst two barrels were nice and I got behind him on the third barrel and he bowed out on me.”Before the short go, Hatch had a momentary panic when she discovered Sizzle missing a shoe. Luckily, she was able to get it replaced just in time. “That made me a little nervous,” said Hatch, who is sponsored by Morinda Care. “In the short go, he was running really hard for me with the crowd and noise. He turned his fi rst and second better than any of his other runs. I got behind him on the third and he bowed out a couple of steps on the backside. It really cost us, but we still placed.” The victory has Hatch contemplating a run for WPRA Rookie of the Year, and with the spring run coming to her backyard, she may just have a chance. The 2010 California High School Rodeo As-sociation Champion Barrel Racer fi lled two permits last year, so she could buy her card to be eligible for this season’s rookie titles.Hatch grew up in a non-horse household, but her neighbors’ horses

proved too tempting. “I started out riding English,” she said. “When I was 8, we moved to a different barn and I started running barrels and roping.”Veteran California barrel racer Cathy Vallerga has helped Hatch along the way. “She’s helped me since I was 12,” Hatch said. “She trained my fi rst barrel horse for me and I’ve been riding with her since then.”Vallerga also helped Hatch fi nish out Sizzle.

James Commander had the gelding loping the pattern when Hatch saw Sizzle advertised on the internet and had to have him. Hatch will continue to rodeo as long as she can make it back for her college classes. So far, her professors have been really great to work with, she said. “I had my math professor when I was in high school,” she said. “She’s followed me the whole time. She even had on her Facebook page how I did. I thought that was really cool.”Former Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifi er Fallon Taylor also had a really cool experience in Tucson. She fi nished second in the average with a horse that was fi rst getting broke to ride during last year’s rodeo! Flos Heiress (“Baby Flo”) is one of two full sisters that Taylor is currently campaigning. Both are by World Champion sire Dr Nick Bar and out of Taylor’s NFR star Flowers And Money, by On The Money Red. Baby Flo is a 6-year-old and Flos Nicknack (“Nick-nack”) is 8. “She’s been pretty incredible,” Taylor said of Baby Flo. “I’m kind of partial to her because she is the youngest one.”The second-place fi nish was worth $5,628 of the $41,673 total purse. The La Fiesta de los Vaqueros committee generously added $19,350. Taylor, who has a barrel horse training and brokering business in Whitesboro, Texas, had no choice but to turn to her two mares while her stallion Nicks Huachuca (“Chuck”) recovered from a near-fatal injury. After the Odessa, Texas, rodeo in 2011, Chuck pulled the hard hoof capsule completely off his foot after catching his shoe on a wire fence. “We’re on the downhill side of his recovery,” said Taylor, who is sponsored by Fame N Kane blinged apparel and accessories. “His foot has grown back and he’s gained a lot of weight because everything isn’t being metabolized to go to the foot anymore. He’s doing really good, but there were a lot times I had to ask myself is

he really going to be okay or am I doing this for me?”Since she was entered in rodeos, Nicknack got thrown into the fray and Baby Flo had to learn a lot in a hurry. “Both are equally nice,” she said. “Baby Flo really likes the big outdoor pens. I’m going to the California rodeos with her because I think she will really like it. I want to keep her loving it.”In the big pen in Tucson, Baby Flo had her fi rst experience with deep, heavy footing during the fi rst round. She and Taylor were more than a half-second back with an 18.0. They got a performance for their second run and a little better footing helped them place in the round. “I don’t know how I made it back to the short round,” said Taylor. “She was running with everything she had and we won the short. I didn’t think it was possible to come from that far back to get second. I was very grateful though.”

Taylor plans on running Nicknack at the Texas rodeos in March and saving Baby Flo for California.“She’s never done anything but her job,” she said of Baby Flo. “She’s never done anything wrong. It is always touch and go though, because you’re always wondering if this is too much too fast.”

We actually raised him as well, Danny Kingins owned him, and he was out of the Plenty Tiny mare that our ranch (Plenty Tiny Ranch) is named after. Pink started out a lit-tle bit slow but the last couple months she has really put it together. We didn’t have her entered in the slot race in OKC, but she won 3rd in the 2nd go of the Juvenile. She has been really consistent, has a good temperment and is pretty easy to ride for a 4 year old. She has tied up on us twice so we switched feed, but other than that she had been pretty easy. She has probably earned around 28-30k so far this year. After that it will slow down a while until the fall when the Jud Little Futurity kicks off the fall futurities. We usually give them a few months in the summer to rest while we get the 3 year olds for the next year ready. We start exhibitioning the 3 year olds after Ft. Smith. THE RUNDOWN: TALMADGE GREENHORSE: I Know I Can 2 “I Know”Gray Gelding, 4 Years Old, 15.1 hands, 1050 lbs.HORSE HISTORY: Victory Farms bred him and raised him and I bought him at Kinder last year (2011). In July of 2011, Gerald & Paula Williams bought him from me. He is really still fi guring out what his style is. Although he had only been on the clock once before, he placed at OKC. Then he barely caught a barrel to win the Double J Futurity (I Know did end up running the fastest time of the futurity). Overall, he has been to OKC, the Southern Rebel Futurity, Double J Futurity, LG Pro Classic, and the Southeastern Arena Futurity. He has pulled a check everywhere except in Kinder (LG Pro Classic). Going into Kinder I thought maybe I Know I Can 2 need a little more pocket, but that just threw him off. I have ridden quite a few On The Money Red’s and they like to run a little straighter and with less pocket so I went back to that this weekend and he won it. He is a really, really easy laid back horse with lots of personality. The fi rst barrel he has his own deal on, but on the

second two barrels you could just hold the saddle horn and ride. It’s so easy for him, you don’t really feel like your running that fast of times, he just does it so easy. He has won between 7-8k so far his futurity year. NOTE: His dam, De Streaker, is also the dam of one of the all-time leading barrel futurity horse’s and multiple NFR round winner, Mulberry Canyon Moon. BIT: Twisted Wire O Ring Snaffl e

After they get older you can’t fi x them so just keep them fl at. WHAT QUALITIES DO ALL GOOD FUTURITY HORSES POSEESS? What I always try to do with the different bloodlines is to let them run the style they want so they can be successful. I have won money with On The Money Red horses, Dash Ta Fame’s, Rare Jet’s and other blood-lines. Each bloodline has a style that seems to fi t them. I always try to watch other people and note what the bloodlines are. It helps me see what style each horses prefers so that I’m prepared when I have one with a similar pedigree. The biggest key behind my success is that it is easier to change my style to fi t the colts rather than change the colts to fi t my style.

For instance, this year I have what I think are 4 good colts out of different bloodlines with different styles. If I tried to make them all fi t my own style I would only have 1 good colt instead of 4. I always say when it comes down to crunch time, you are going to do what’s natural. I believe the same is true with the horses. So, if I allow the colts to do the barrels in the style that’s natural they are going to be happier doing their job and will last longer. You can train them all you want but they are born with the mind to do it! Anymore, I can look at a colts conformation and get close to guessing what style he will run. I just start them in the style I think that will fi t them. I Know I Can 2 has a lower neck set so he has more of a four footed style where as a horse with a higher neck set might be a little stiffer and get on their back end more. If I had to pick one quality that all the really good futurity horses I have ridden possess it’d be that they always had their mind on the job when we come down the alley. They are in my hands, they are focused, and that let’s me focus on the job ahead of me. If the horse is broke you can help yourself get out of trouble. If they aren’t broke and you get in trouble you are just along for the ride! If they are broke whether at futurities and rodeos you can get yourself out of trouble and still place. Headin’ For HomeHeadin’ For Home by Mike Morrison by Mike Morrison Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries) Triple M (Mike Morrison Ministries)

“What’s on your Bucket List?” You hear that question quite often now that the movie came out by that name. People joke around

about the things they wanted to do before they “kick the bucket” but for many, they waited too long and it’s too late now to fulfi ll those dreams. Age, health, and responsibilities have come between them and their desires. Maybe some of those dreams wouldn’t have been good if they had acted upon them. Keep in mind that God has a good plan for your life and if you follow His will, you’ll be fulfi lled and happy even if it doesn’t appear glamorous or exciting. Also, some people had to wait until children were grown or until retirement to do some of the things they always hoped to some day. One report said 64% of the greatest achievements in the world were accomplished by people over the age of 60. Walt Disney once said, “If you can dream it, you can do it.” If God is in your plan, it will work, but without god, you can do nothing (John 15:5). With God all things are possible (Matthew 19:29). The Bible is full of miracles but they still happen today. In

the early 1920s there was a racehorse named Humorist who won the English Derby but died shortly after that. An autopsy was done on the horse and it was learned that he had been born with only one lung! He should never have been able to race much less be a winner. Ask God to help you know His will and then do it. Don’t limit yourself by limiting God. Joyce Meyer said she’d rather ask God for a whole lot and just get half of it that not ask for anything and get all of it! Ask God to help you be satisfi ed with who you are and where you are and He’ll do it. You can be happy no matter what if you have Jesus in your heart. Romans 8:31 says, “If God is for us who can be against us?” We win!
