Wawanesa Lions Club has been taking it a bit easy in the month of August – although

they did give away a Chase the Ace pot to Todd Engram. He was pleased! Chase the Ace is held every Friday evening from 6 till 7 pm at the Oakland Inn. Everyone is welcome. There was a meat draw in August and there will be another on Septem-ber 15. It starts at 5 pm at the Oakland Inn. Also happening in September, is the Lions Roar for Hearing Poker Derby. It is on September 9 at Austin, Manitoba. Money collected goes to enhance children’s hearing programs. This year, you can design your own route for the poker derby. To see how this works, log in to the Lions Roar for Hear-ing Facebook page or call Lion Margaret at 204-824-2457. The first Lions meet-ing is on September 14. If you are interested in the things that Lions do, please call Lion Tony at 824- 2855 for more informa-tion.

Manitobans are among the world’s most giving people of their time and re-sources, and I have great respect for our highly skilled first responders who provide the medical service our communities rely on. It seems like just yesterday when I served as captain of the volunteer fire department in Glenboro and worked closely with these de-voted individuals. A 2013 EMS System Review by Reg Toews made recommendations for the devel-opment of a more integrated, responsive and reliable system. The review calls for the relo-cation of a number of EMS stations across southern Manitoba to more closely match resources with service demand. We are act-ing on medical advice to modernize and im-prove EMS service and our commitment is to meet response time goals of no more than 30 minutes for 90% of the population, 90% of the time. These changes will allow for a stable network of highly trained personnel to pro-vide emergency care, rather than reliance on on-call or call back staff. As additional in-vestments are made in paramedic staffing in the coming years, EMS stations will be staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Our plan includes using Flexible Dispatch, a globally recognized deployment model to shift resources as they are required through-out a region, to ensure coverage is available when people need it most. This is a practical plan that signals the beginning of a new and improved era of EMS care in Manitoba. We have reached out

to local municipalities to provide technical briefings and answer any questions they may have. It is important to note that these changes will happen gradually and may not take place for 7-10 years until the necessary resources, including trained staff, are avail-able. In the spirit of service that Manitobans hold dear, we are confident in our assurance that the improvements being made will pro-vide a more sustainable and reliable level of service throughout the province. Cliff Cullen MLA for Spruce Woods

Improving our EMS System Requires Courage, Commitment

12

We were absolutely stunned recently when the government of Manitoba announced a “new” plan to reduce the number of ambu-lance stations in the province. This by a gov-ernment that is supposedly sympathetic and understanding of the difficulties of living in the rural areas. This is not a new proposal, a plan almost identical to this had been suggested a great many years ago, had been thoroughly discussed and rejected as being totally unrea-sonable and unacceptable for the rural areas. We arrived in Wawanesa in 1966, so we are now two of the few remaining physicians in West Man who have had the experience of practicing out of a small hospital in the rural area, and being on call virtually 24/7. We were expected to be able to begin treatment of just about anything that occurred in our area. On many occasions our station wagon acted as an ambulance, a situation that was far less than ideal. There was a private service out of Glen-boro, which served Wawanesa and area well, but in some very urgent cases it could take far longer than was acceptable for it to travel to an emergency in the Wawanesa area. Even worse, if Glenboro’s ambulance was on a call to Bran-don or Winnipeg, we would be waiting hours, therefore the only solution in some cases was to use our station wagon, since “the magic hour” would have been long gone by the time an ambulance could arrive. The fact that local politicians are saying that this plan is to be implemented over the next 5 to 7 years, is no excuse to sit back and wait and see what happens. This is a time to be very proactive, a plan is in the books that is a disgrace and is detrimental to all rural citizens. We do not wish to see any ambulance services removed from any rural community, but the Wawanesa service has been excellent. How many times has it been off line in the last 15 years compared with other services in other communities? We can assure you that their record is fantastic, and yet our “friendly” gov-

ernment has a wish to demolish a service that has served the community so well, by volun-teers who have taken extensive mandatory ex-tra training, in their own time and at consider-able expense in time and lost wages to the in-dividual. To say that government wishes ambu-lance service to be within 30 minutes of all rural residents, and then state that they wish to close numerous rural services, would be laughable if it were not so serious. With this plan, there will be many areas that will not be covered within that 30 minute time limit. In addition, ambulances are away from their bases many times for six hours or more if they have trips to Brandon or Winnipeg, and if there be a second or third call, what happens in those cases? With many hospital closures hav-ing occurred, patients are already having to be transported further to the bigger centers, leav-ing the ambulance base unattended. If this re-organization goes through, the ambulance ser-vice from the nearby town will not be avail-able to cover as it will have been closed down. How long will the wait be then? Are they seriously suggesting that we should go back to the situation as it was fifty years ago, when we and passersby assisted at accidents in all weathers, waiting for the am-bulance to arrive? Every minute seemed like an hour, trying to keep the patients and our-selves warm and dry and dealing with the inju-ries as well. Surely, we should be trying to improve our healthcare system not degrade it. We urge our MLAs, Council members and especially the local citizens in this area, to make their voices heard, to ask for a review of these illogical and devastating plans to our ambulance service. In our opinion, this matter is certainly one of the most important issues with which you will be faced. W.R. Abell (Bob) Margaret. E. Abell (Mattie)

Greetings from Wawanesa Wee Care Board and Staff. We have had a very topsy turvy summer, and while we have had stress, sadness and some staff shortages, we have above all, had teamwork and growth. Just like our mission statement says, we strive to meet the needs of all children…and we also strive to meet the needs of our staff. So, with some staff moving on, and some staff having changing personal needs, we have re-vamped our staff schedules to meet the needs of staff families as well as the needs of the children and families we serve! Our staffing has changed a bit in the last few months, so we wanted to give you a look at to who will be making up ‘Team Wee Care’ this fall! Our Program Supervisors are Sharla Neufeld (stand-alone building) and Teresa Simpson (school programs). Both of these lovely ladies have been with Wee Care for 10 years this year! Cheers to them! Becky Logan- Becky is an ECE III who came to the Wee Care team in March of 2015. Becky has worked in a variety of child care positions, including nursery school teacher and child development worker. Becky and her family reside on a farm near Caroll. Becky works part time in the toddler program. Mandy Dowd is from Glenboro, and came to work at Wee Care fresh out of high school a few years ago! Mandy has started the workplace training program through As-siniboine Community College, which allows her to attend school 2 days a week and work the other 3, working toward her ECE II di-ploma! Mandy works her 3 days a week in

the Jr K/school age program. Sandi MacIntosh came to Wee Care in the spring of 2015. Sandi lives in Wawanesa with her 2 school age children and her hubby. Sandi works part time in the toddler program. Siobhain O’Connor came to the Wee Care Team last year as a sub, then a part time staff, and is now our cook! The children (and staff) are so lucky to be the recipients of her home cooking! Siobhain and her family live on a farm outside of Wawanesa. Kristen Sylvester has just joined our team! Kristen is from Portage, but has roots here in Wawanesa! Kristen is a recent gradu-ate of the ECE program at ACC. Kristen now resides in Wawanesa and has been an easy fit with our team! Kristen works full time in the toddler program. Aletha Reigel will be joining our team in September! Aletha Riegel is an ECE II who obtained her diploma through the work-place training program at Assiniboine Com-munity College. Aletha has worked in child care settings in both Alberta and Manitoba. Aletha lives in Shilo with her husband. Aletha works full time in the Jr K/school age program. Amber Bone has just started at Wee Care as a casual/sub. back to Manitoba, where Laura grew up! Laura has her ECEII diploma with specializa-tion in Infant/toddler programming. Laura has worked in various early childhood set-tings, including Aboriginal Head Start. This fall Laura will be working part time in the toddler program. Kalee Kartzmark has just joined our team as our part time Kids Club (school age) staff. She has a degree in psychology from Brandon University, and has been a youth care worker for CFS, as well as held various fitness and health related positions. Kalee is looking to settle down in Wawanesa, and will be an exciting addition to our before and after school program in Kids Club! Jenny Harkness is our super-fantastic casual/sub! Jenny has her certificate as an

Educational Assistant. Jenny lives in Bran-don and works part time in the accounting office at Wal Mart, and has filled almost every shift at Wee Care, covering for absent staff. She is an excellent sub, and we are happy to have her ‘on call!’ Sandra Smith is part of the Wee Care team as our admin assistant. Sandra works casual hours to keep our books up to date and our staff paid! Sandra also fills in peri-odically on the floor; she can’t resist the little people! Sandra’s extensive background in Early Childhood serves as a wonderful re-source for our team! Fata Muhelijic is the cleaner for both of our facilities. She has seen all the Wee Care dirt! We appreciate her more than she likely knows! Fata and her husband live in Wawanesa. My name is Jenn Cullen, and I abso-lutely love what I do as the director of Wawanesa Wee Care, working with staff, families and children to enrich our little community! I am always happy to answer any questions anyone has about child care in general, our programming, or Wee Care spe-cifically. Thank you to our community for continually supporting us. Please give us a big wave if you see us out and about!

LIONS ROAR FOR HEARING

All children under 18 who are diag-nosed with hearing loss and are waiting for their new hearing aid to arrive or who have a device that is being repaired will soon be eligible to borrow one thanks to the Lions Children's Loaner Hearing Aid program. The Lions Roar for Hearing fundraiser has raised $17,000 for their Hearing Committee over the past three years. The funds will be used to start the Lions Children's Loaner Hearing Aid pro-gram that will provide hearing aids to audiology clinics across Manitoba. The use of loaner hearing aids will ensure that children do not have to go without hearing aids at this important time in their lan-guage and cognitive development. This year's Roar for Hearing event takes place on Saturday, September 9th at the Austin Community Hall and features a pancake breakfast, poker derby ride, fun activities and a pasta supper. The poker derby can be a "ride in" format or follow a prescribed route. Any licensed vehicle is welcome to participate. Wawanesa Lions Don & Margaret Martin have been mem-bers of the "Roar for Hearing" Committee since its formation & would be glad to provide more information (204-824-2457) or check us out at htps://www.facebook.com/lionsroarforhearing .

All are Welcome!!

Thank you to all who came out and supported our pie sale at the museum. All proceeds will go into the building fund. Thank you to all

the ladies who baked and worked selling! It was great to have Rev. Chris and his wife Audrey out for the event. Rev. Chris had an opportunity to meet folks in the community and to tour the museum church. We look forward to welcoming them to more events this year! Has anyone noticed the steeple at St. Paul’s? 2 fearless volunteers scaled the tower and gave the steeple a much needed paint job. Thanks Steve and Ivan. It looks amazing!! The new signs are on order and will complete the projects for the year! Fall is just around the corner, and a busy time ahead for St. Paul’s. Stay tuned to the Lioness Express for a list of events. The first round of Kris Kringle letters have been mailed out to vendors. Please do not delay in your response, as the sale is filling up quickly. Contact Paula Diaz or Dawn Huber (coordinators) for more infor-mation. To all our farm families we send our thoughts and prayers for an abundant har-vest season. If anyone is needing to contact

Rev Chris, please call Deb Chapman (Warden) at 824-3414.

Generous Donation! Kerri Patterson was able to capture some great photos and was selected as a contest winner of the "Proud to be Canadian" photo contest. As part of her prize, she was awarded $150 to donate towards a non-profit organization or charity and Kerri kept it local and donated it to the Wawanesa Food Bank. She presented the cheque to the organizer of the food bank who was elated!

News Another summer and museum season is now behind us. Traffic through the mu-seum was light and comments, as always, were positive and encouraging. We did miss Nellie and her friends, but we are happy to have The Leigh Collection and My Ladies Dressing Room back in place. Burger Days were amazing, especially since we didn’t have our master chef doing all the cooking. We are so grateful for our BBQ volunteers—Patricia Wilton, Denice Brown, Steve Trowbridge, the boys from Shur Gro and the Royal Bank Staff (for the third time). Norbert’s Manufacturing was our top order with 30 burgers three times! Everyone enjoyed your veggies, Rick & Dorothy. Nicole and Jake did a great job of touring visitors and keeping the day to day running of the museum going smoothly. Due to Express deadlines we will re-port on the video in the church in our Octo-ber news. We have two boxes of burgers for sale at $40.00 a box. (40 burgers per box). If in-terested call 204-824-2548 . We have three NELLIE McCLUNG books to loan out: Sowing Seeds in Danny, The Stream Runs Fast and In Times Like These. To borrow these books call please call Margret Brown at 204-724-6389. The museum is closed for regular hours as of September 1st. Tours can be ar-ranged by calling 204-824-2548 or 204-824-2551 or enquiring at The Flower Shop.

Spruce woods Provincial Park: On August 12th, 2017 at 8:43 pm a 15 year old male calls advising that he is walking near the Spirit sands with a 15 year old female when they heard a loud rustle in the bush and sounds. They become scared and were waiting on top of a lookout point. A Blue Hills RCMP member from Car-berry made his way through the dark and despite no cell phone service, was able to track the kids through a 2 km hike on foot down the trail and escorted them back to the parking lot safe and sound. The youth were delivered to a concerned mother who had been looking for them but was unable to reach them due to poor cell service. RM of Cornwallis: On August 15th, 2017, at 12:26 p.m. Blue Hills RCMP received a report from a home owner advising that sometime be-tween 08:30 am and 12:15 pm, suspect(s) broke into their house 13.5 kilometres east of Brandon just off of Provincial road #340. Entrance was gained through the back garage door and numer-ous jewellery items, personal documents, an IPA and a lock box were stolen. Anyone with information on this matter or know of anyone attempting to sell suspicious jew-ellery are encouraged to contact the Blue Hills RCMP- Brandon Detachment at (204) 726-7522. If you wish to remain Anonymous call: Manitoba Crime Stoppers toll free 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or Submit: a source tip online at www.manitobacrimestoppers.com or text “TIPMAN” plus your message to CRIMES (274637) if your information leads to the arrest and charge, you may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2000.
