ferent career stages. They will discuss what skills beyond basic chemistry they
found helpful to both get their job and advance through their careers beyond
just beakers and bench work. Stay after the panel discussion to network with
other ACS members and scientists over coffee and sweets. Cost to attend the
event is $5. Please register by March 5th to ensure an accurate headcount.

The Science of Jam Presented by: Tara Grey, Jam Maker & Owner, Gus and Grey, Detroit, MI
Tara Grey’s mission to create jams, jellies, preserves and marmalade's that can be enjoyed in a variety of ways has been quite a success. Gus & Grey is a one-woman show, with a line of jams and jellies from recipes she dreams up and gives colorful names. No simple “grape jelly” here. Her jars are filled with Space Jam (star fruit), Sassy Redhead (strawberry ginger), Floozie (peach), and Trifecta (triple berry). Her jams are not all sweet. Grey also makes a habenero sparked jam called Hubba Hubba and a spiced banana spread dubbed Funky Monkey. She uses local ingredients whenever possible, no preservatives, and makes only small batches to ensure perfection. Samples will be provided!

Cannabinoid Analysis Presented by: Avi Zallen, Founder & President, Steadfast Analytical Laboratory, Hazel Park, MI
Steadfast Lab uses innovative analytical chemistry to achieve its mission of providing testing services that assure ac-cess to safe and effective medicines. Their unique chemistry allows them to provide the most comprehensive and relia-ble services at prices that make testing accessible to all. Chemistry makes each of us unique, it makes every plant dif-ferent and distinct, and it is the source of Steadfast Lab’s advantages. Their proprietary method of extraction, derivatiza-tion, and gas chromatography with a flame ionization detector (GC-FID) allows the cannabinoids to be measured as they really are in the sample. Without Steadfast’s derivatization chemistry, gas chromatography decarboxylates the sample at high temperatures, changing it in ways that vary from sample to sample. To assure safety, Steadfast Lab us-es only USP validated microbiology to test for mold, fungi, mildew and yeast. Other analytical techniques are employed to measure pesticide, terpenes, residual solvents, objectionable organisms, and DNA strain identification.
Feel free to join us before the talk at 6:00 PM for a dutch-treat dinner. For more information, contact Meghann at 313.993.1259 or [email protected]

Chemists Celebrate Earth Day
Part of the Green Fest at the Detroit Zoo
Saturday, April 14, 2018
The Detroit Section will run a Chemists Celebrate Earth Day event at the Detroit Zoo on Saturday, April 14. The CCED event will be part of the Zoo’s Green Fest program. The CCED event will in-clude several hands-on experiments including erupting volcanos, dry ice, making ink from tea, and making slime from guar gum. The event runs from 9 AM to 3 PM.
Our volunteers include local chemists and student members from many local universities. Over 500 children are expected to participate in the activities and will receive the Celebrating Chemistry handout and a “Hooray for Chemistry” bag to take their experiments home in. BASF Corporation is sponsoring the CCED event with supplies, shirts and employee volunteers.
If you would like to volunteer, please contact Denise Grimsley at [email protected].
Mailing List Updates You may be seeing the Detroit Chemist email message for the first time. The mailing list has just been updated to the most up-to-date version available supplied by the national office of the Ameri-can Chemical Society. This list is based upon the information that the members provide to the So-ciety. Our local list must be updated manually however, so changes are delayed.
