Missing Friends. Information is requested respecting the present

whereabouts of Francis Smart, who (together with William Wybrow and George Dixon) was convicted at Chelmsford assizes, England, on the Sth March, 1849, receiving a sentence of 10 years transportation, and was sent to Van Diemen's Land, in the convict ship " Lady Montague," in July, 1852, where he landed and corresponded with his relatives. He has a daughter (Mrs. Harriet Day) residing at Barns-bury, England. Information to Detective Ofiice, Perth.

Information is requested respecting the present whereabouts of James Alfred McGhie, lately resid­ing at No. 3, Buckingham Street, North Eichmond, Melbourne. He left the above place for Sydney, on the 15th May last, but it is believed he has not gone there; description, stout build, age about 26 years, Sft. 10 to l l in . high, clean shaved. He is an ex-Police Constable, recently discharged from the Victorian Police Force. Information to Detective Office, Perth.

On the 17th January, 1882, the headless body of a man was found near the Deep Lead Eailway Station, Stawell, and at an inquest, held subsequently, it was ^ o w n that the man had been wilfully murdered.

/ T h e remains are believed to be those of one Charles / Forbes or Forbys, who worked on the Dimboola line

j / of railway during the months of October, November, ' and December, 1881, with a man named Eobert

Francis Burns. The said Eobert Francis Burns has since been arrested, and committed for trial at the

Central Criminal Court, to be held at Melbourne on the 15th day of August, 1882, for the murder of Charles Forbes or Forbys; but as the prisoner alleges that Forbes is still alive, it is requested that the said Charles Forbes or Forbys, if living, or any person acquainted with him, or able to give information about him since the date ot bis disappearance, should at once communicate with the Chief Commissioner of Police, Melbourne. Description of the missing man, Charles Forbes, is as follows :—About 40 years of age, Sft. 10^ or 11 inches high, 14 stone weight, full sandy beard, and hair a shade darker, supposed to be a native of the North of Ireland. 0 . 582, 16th May, 1882.

branded 5 near shoulder, and a black mare, heavy in foal, blotched brand under saddle, near side, long tail. He sold the black mare to William Lavender for ^28 10s. a.nd with part of the proceeds purchased a brindle kangaroo dot as balance an order on G. Shenton, dated 19th or 20th June, 1882, drawn by William Lavender in favor of George

Stolen from the dwelling of Joseph Avinski, 206, Lonsdale-street east, Melbourne, on the night of the 10th instant, a black leather bag, containing a lady's gold hunting lever watch, No. 14076, Erhardt; a gold half-hunting watch. No. 13199; a lady's gold hunting watch, No. 3540, Eotherhams ; a lady's gold open-face watch. No. 18460 ; two small gold hunting watches; a colonial gold diamond bracelet, set with three diamonds; a heavy colonial gold diamond bracelet, set with about fifteen diamonds in the shape of a bar; a gold bracelet, link pattern, with tassels and diamond; a heavy colonial gold necklace (in case), large flat-link pattern chased one side and plain the other; two colonial gold necklaces, snake pattern (in case) ; a gold negligee, with three round ornaments and tassels, and set with pearls in centre; several fancy gold albert chains, set with diamonds and rubies in middle; a large size half-hoop diamond ring ; several half-hoop diamond rings, set with dia­monds, rubies, and emeralds ; a set gold brooch and earrings, round pattern, set with three diamonds in each; a gold set, brooch, earrings, and bracelet, set with pearls in grape pattern; (in case) a set brooch and earrings, large flat pattern, set with green stones ; a set brooch and earrings, with tassels, set with green and white stones; a pair earrings, round pattern, blue enamelled, with diamond in centre; and a quantity of sundry jewellery. Most of the jewellery is in dark velvet cases and morocco leather cases; a diamond locket, double star pattern, and set round with diamonds; a single-stone diamond locket; a gold pendant, black enamel round the edges, set with twenty-seven diamonds; a gold set, brooch and ear­rings, round pattern, polished gold, set with single diamonds; a gold set, brooch and earrings, half-polished, set with diamonds, and pearls round the edge ; a gold sot, brooch and earrings, oval pattern, set with emeralds and other stones ; four pair of gold earrings, set with amethyst and imitation diamond in centre of amethyst; two diamond rings, set with three diamonds and two rubies; two diamond rings set with emeralds. Inquests. On 19th inst., at Fremantle, before J. G. Slade,

E.M. and Coroner, on the body of Eichard McKew, p., late 8939, who was run over by a horse and

cart, on the 18th inst. Verdict—"Accidental death."

On 13th inst., at Kojonup, before J. C. Eosselloty, E.M. and Coroner, on the body of James Watts, who was found dead 2i miles from Kojonup, on the 10th inst. Verdict—" Death from inflammation of the right lung, accelerated by exposure to wet and cold, and from excessive drinking."

On 22nd inst., at Lunatic Asylum, Fremantle, before J. G. Slade, E.M. and Coroner, on the body of John Ayscough, exp., late 4164, who died at the Lunatic Asylum, on 21st iust. Verdict—"Death from natural causes."

Carroll and Wheelock went in pursuit, and returned on the 23rd inst., and reported losing tracks about three miles from Chockerup, returning in direction of Albany. Charles Laurne is reported as identical with James Cody (vi.de Police Gazette, 1881, page 74), and is now pass­ing under the name of Simpson.
