Zone 10 President’s Message

With 2013 drawing to a close, we can slow down on the Bowls front and look forward to the 2014 season. By now all Clubs would have looked at the Discussion Paper regarding the proposed new

the Winners in State, Zone, and Club events in 2013.

I would like to thank the Zone 10 Executives for their support throughout the year. Also to the other Committees - Match & Games, Selectors, Umpires, Coaches, and the many Clubs and

Editors Message

With this being the last edition of “In The Zone” for 2013, I would like to thank you all for the support and encouragement that I have received since going to print back in July. I look forward to this support

continuing into 2014 and making “In The Zone” an even better publication for all to receive. I would also like to wish all a Merry Christmas and a very happy, safe and prosperous 2014

Have you had a look at the Discussion Paper on possible Zone redistribution yet? No – you haven’t! WHY?? If you play bowls – and especially Pennants – then this affects YOU and YOUR opinion is required by both your Club and Zone 10. There are many parts of the Discussion Paper that could have a dramatic effect of the future of bowls in your area, whether it is possibly good or bad!! You have a voice and as it says above “It’s in YOUR hands” Zone 10 Executive have arranged to consult with Zones 5, 9,11 & 12 to discuss the distribution effect that it could have on the Metropolitan area these zones cover. This consultation will help form the Zone 10 submission. Zone 10 Executive has requested that all Clubs and their Members write to Bowls NSW noting either agreement, disagreement, suggestions and with some resolution to make the changes more palatable for their Club and their Members. It is asked that the Zone be copied with your submission to allow a consensus for the Zone’s submission. Remember – 31ST JANUARY is the Submission deadline and with Xmas fast approaching, time is running out.

&

A very quiet period of the year now with all State events completed has resulted in no news for this edition from Bowls Australia and Bowls NSW

If you enjoy Barefoot Bowls and have always wanted to go to Hawaii. Aloha Bowls is for you!

Played over three days in the idyllic setting of the Honolulu Lawn Bowling Club in downtown Waikiki, the Aloha Bowls Championships takes the laid-back approach of Australia's most social sport, Barefoot Bowls to new levels! This summer (December 2013/January 2014) YOU can register a team and qualify at any (or all) of the 10 NSW Aloha Pilot venues in the Inaugural Aloha Bowls Championships with SIX lucky teams heading off to Hawaii to play in the Unofficial World Barefoot Championships in February 2014! Five teams will qualify by first winning at their venue and then a playing-off against another venue winner. The sixth qualifying team will be drawn from ALL ENTRIES and CAN BE ANY TEAM that hasn't already qualified!!! For just $22 (inc GST) per player to enter each qualifying event (that’s $44 inc GST per team) you could win a trip to Hawaii with your airfares and accommodation paid! The format is Five Bowl pairs, with teams restricted to a maximum of 1 registered bowler per team who must play skip and play only 2 bowls each end. The lead in each team must not have been a registered bowler for the past ten (10) years - or preferably never at all... they will play 3 bowls each end. Both players can also be new bowlers or non-registered for the past 10 years. Qualifying will be carried out at –

* DATES SUBJECT TO CHANGE - WHERE PLAYERS HAVE ENTERED MULTIPLE VENUES ALL EFFORTS WILL BE MADE TO AVOID SCHEDULING CLASHES

February is a beautiful time of the year in Honolulu, with average temperatures of 26 degrees. Three days of competition will mean fun and new friends in this beautiful setting, and of course a World Championship, albeit completely unofficial. The other way to get to the finals in Hawaii is to pay $275 inc GST per team which will allow you direct entry into the Aloha Bowls Finals at Honolulu Bowling Club! You will however be required to pay all your own expenses (i.e accommodation, travel, spending money etc) to get to the Finals in February! Remember - ONLY one registered bowler allowed per pair and the games are fun, fast and frantic!!! More information – www.alohabowls.com.au

The hype around this year’s Mixed Four’s Final failed to materialise as the winning team displayed dominance in each position, from the very first end. The team of Lan Lim, Jeff Starr, Shirley de la Harpe and Danny Phillips were convincing winners 26-17 over Denise Culverwell, Florence Lee, Ross Moore and Paul Bryan.

Castle Hill Bowling Club congratulates Shirley de la Harpe, Danny Phillips and Debbie Howard on qualifying for the 2014 Australia Open and wishes them every success.

Hunters Hill Bowling Club "Cock of the Walk" 2013

Hunters Hill held their playoffs to determine the overall "Cock of the Walk" winner for 2013 on Saturday the 7th of December.

The series was re-worked and re-introduced to try and bolster numbers on the green outside of championship events. Working on a FedEx cup type system points were awarded throughout the year on a scale that rewarded participation as well as winning. All Championship finals were worth double points

with the major singles final worth triple points. At the end of our regular season we took the top twelve through to a playoff series to determine the overall Champion.

It was pleasing to see our top twelve consisting of some of our championship winners as well as others who bowled well all year without getting their name onto a championship board. However most pleasing to see was the number of bowlers on the green at the back end of our season trying to ensure their spot

in the finals.

Robbie Rose after picking up three titles throughout the year finished on top of our preliminary championship and went into the finals as our top seed. The finals consisted of a series of 9 end singles matches before reaching a 12 end final. The day went well with every match going down to the wire. As the day reached the pointy end our four semi finalists were Darrick Amos v Jimmy Saddler and Charles

Phillips v Nick Oppedisano. Darrick got up over Jimmy in a high quality match and Charles exacted some revenge over Nick, who beat him in the major singles final earlier in the year, to take the other spot in the

final. In another high quality match Charles went on to defeat Darrick in the final to take out the overall title.

Congratulations again to Robbie for taking out the preliminary title, Charles for winning the overall title and to all of those involved in the finals playoffs. We will be doing it all again in the new year with a few

tweaks to make it bigger and better.

Epping North School year 4 pupils raise hands for Bowls

Epping North School pupils show their enjoyment in attending the five week bowling program held in conjunction with the North Epping Bowling Club. During the program approximately 100 year 3 and 4 girls and boys were involved and each received bowls coaching by club members and played games of target

bowls.

Blue Mountains Bushfire Appeal

A Bush Fire Appeal "Music on the Green Afternoon" was held on Sunday 8 December at the North Epping Bowling Club. The afternoon consisted of live music, food stalls, gift stalls and for the younger at

heart a Jumping Castle and the Giant Waterslide. Shown in the photo is the top half of the waterslide which kept the younger people entertained on the warm afternoon. All in all the total money raised for the Bendigo Bank Blue Mountains Bush Fire Appeal including sponsors donations from Cook Care (Poplars Retirement Village), North Epping Branch Bendigo Bank, Epping Reality and Epping Travel exceeded $10,000. A great afternoon of fun and entertainment came up with an excellent result for the Bush Fire

Appeal.

Parramatta RSL BC will have it’s last game of lawn bowls on 31st October 2014. A decision has been finalised to redevelop the club and unfortunately lawn bowls was not included in the redevelopment. This

is another club that has been long established that will be lost to the bowling fraternity.

Presentation Day was well attended with 50 bowlers there to either receive a trophy or show support for those that did. After opening by Warren Phillips, David Wilson again performed his favourite role as Master of Ceremonies, conducting the action at all times.

As is tradition at West Pennant Hills, the winner of the Major Singles responds on behalf of all recipients. This year Keith Robinson congratulated all winners and runners up, and made special mention to the bowlers that entered and did not make it to the final. As Keith pointed out, if not for all entrants, there would not be championships and there would not be finalists. Keith also expressed thanks for the ‘behind the scenes’ efforts of people such as the Match Committee, that contribute considerable time to programme, organise and conduct the championships. Without this effort, the championships would not run as well as they do.

Thanks must go to David Wilson for preparing the programme, obtaining trophies and shields and assisting in the preparation. Ian Corke was busy taking photos (thanks Warren for the camera) of all the

trophy winners and if you want any of the photos please contact Ian at [email protected]

The Zone 10 Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 12th February at Dundas Sports &

Recreation Club commencing at 7.00pm. This is YOUR chance to put your hand up and help with the Management of Zone 10 – YOUR ZONE!! There are plenty, actually more than plenty, of people who sit back and criticise the people who dedicate many hours to make sure the Zone runs to it best potential. Many delegate meetings see the same faces turn up year after year because they are interested in the future of our zone but it can’t be left to the same people all the time. YOU can make a difference but

YOU need to put yourself into a position to make a difference. Sitting in the bar, schooner in hand and bagging the way the Zone is run is not the way to progress. Give yourself a chance, nominate for a

position on the Executive… You may surprise yourself and your buddies by getting elected and then YOU have the opportunity to help shape the future of our Zone. Contact Zone Secretary Michael

Schwarcz on [email protected] for more information and nomination forms

Something to laugh at…….

Enter the Pearly Gates

Three men die in a car accident Christmas Eve. They all find themselves at the pearly gates waiting to

enter Heaven. On entering they must present something relating or associated with Christmas.

The first man searches his pocket, and finds some Mistletoe, so he is allowed in.

The second man presents a cracker, so he is also allowed in.

The third man pulls out a pair of stockings and a bra.

Confused at this last gesture, St. Peter asks, "How do these represent Christmas?"

Answer... "They're Carol's."
