A couple suspected to be ring leaders in the local drug trade were arrested last week in their home in Ezinketheni Informal Settlement near Copesville. The couple, along with their alleged four runners appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate Court on Monday.

The couple, Robert Tsweli Tsholele (32) and Mary Mponeng Mofokeng (20) are said to be one of the main dagga suppliers to the Pietermaritzburg, greater Durban, Inanda and KwaMashu areas.

After a six month operation, dagga worth approximately R300 000 (street value) was confi scat-ed last Friday. The dagga, believed to have been smuggled from Leso-tho, was stored in one of the huts in the informal settlement. Also confi scated were thousands of rands, including trap money used by undercover police offi cers.

During the early morning oper-ation, a man from Swayimane, allegedly a dealer in Edendale, was arrested on the spot after he was caught red-handed leaving the couples home carrying almost 4kg of dagga in a sling bag.

The six arrested, Tsholele, Mofokeng, Karabo Joene (29), Clement Mocholo Mmcike (28), Fusi Daniel Kere (23) and Filipi Mazibulo (28) are from Lesotho except for Tsholele, who said he was from Matatiele in the south of KwaZulu Natal. Some of the fi ve admitted in court that they were not legally in the country.

They appeared before Magis-trate Ashin Singh who warned them that there may be additional charges against some for being illegal immigrants.

One of the undercover police offi cers on scene (whose name cannot be disclosed) explained to Public Eye that the dagga

is measured in 20 litre drums. According to the police offi cer, the dagga is compressed into the drums and takes the shape of a ball. It is then wrapped and taped, which makes it easier to transport. The compressed packages are known as balls.

The operation was conducted by the South African Police Services, Pietermaritzburg and Provincial Crime Intelligence Units, the Pietermaritzburg Clus-ter Drug Team, and the Hawks special investigative unit, and was supported by the Pietermaritzburg K9 and TRT units.

During the operation two houses were searched as pertinent crime scenes and members arrest-ed six people for dealing in drugs. The operation included six months of undercover investigations and yielded the desired result whereby the targeted drugs dealers have been arrested, said police spokes-women Joey Jeevan.

The Provincial Commander Lt. General Mammonye Ngobeni was

pleased with the latest arrests. Drug dealers should always be aware that they can be arrested at any time. Copesville is one of the areas that we are focusing on and we want to assure the commu-nity that despite the challenges we experience investigating drug cases we will not loosen our grip on drug dealers in the province and we will continue to invade their space, she said.

Other media reported that police are investigating the possi-bility that the Lesotho couple is part of an international dagga smuggling syndicate involving the UK and the Netherlands, however Jeevan dismissed the reports saying that it was not the case.

The six arrested were remanded in custody until their next court appearance on September 2. They have enlisted Legal Aid services to represent them, however they said that they plan on pleading guilty to the charges.

Tenants lost nearly every-thing in a fi re that swept through the three storey Rosedale Mansions block of fl ats in Church Street on Tuesday night.

Manager of the block, Jay Ramlall thanked fi refi ghters, police and ambulance crew who responded so quickly to the fi re.

All the citys emergency ser-vices responded quickly and effi -ciently. This was true service delivery and I want to thank the men and women in uniform for discharging their services so pro-fessionally. We are investigating the cause of the blaze and at this stage cannot speculate on how the fi re may have started.

What is important is that all

the residents and tenants were quickly evacuated from the build-ing and there were no injuries, said Morar.

Msunduzi fi re department senior divisional offi cer Essack Khan said all available resources were deployed to the scene.

Residents from the Rosedale Mansions spent the Wednesday scavenging through what was left of their belongings. Smangele Goge (30), a stall owner nearby, said her son was the fi rst to alert her of the blazing through their fl at.

He ran to me, screaming that I must go get my things from the fl at. When I got there, I couldnt get to my fl at as the fi re was too

much. I had to just sit outside and wait until the fi remen were done, she said.

She said that the fi re started in the last of the fl ats, fl at number 35.

It was an electrical fault and the fi re just went through all our fl ats, starting from the back, said Goge.

She has lived in Rosedale Man-sions since 2004.

I have lost everything. I only have the clothes on my back. My son (10) and I slept on the street on Tuesday night and looks like we going to be sleeping on the street for a few more nights, she cried.

Another resident, Lin-dokuhle Dlam-ini (19) has lived in Rose-dale Mansions his entire life. His parents used to live in the fl at and he was born there.

My par-ents died and I used to live alone. I lost everything. My bed, com-puter, clothes, even my ID is burnt, said Dlamini. He said that he also spent the night on the street.

I was wor-ried that thugs would enter in the night and try and steal our things, but even they left empty handed because every-thing is burnt, he added.

He said that he was nearby when he heard about the fi re. I ran to my fl at and because it was so dark due to the electric-ity going off, I couldnt see any-thing. I just grabbed whatever light stuff I could fi nd, like some clothes. Theres only iron from my bed frame that is left in my fl at, he said.

Other fl at members packed up whatever they could fi nd and made their way in search of new homes.

Its so sad really. These peo-ple have nothing left, said an onlooker.

A senior government offi -cial has applauded the work done through the Love to Live campaign, saying such an initiative should be spread to as many parts of KwaZulu Natal as possible.

Dr Rajendran Govender, senior manager in the Department of Arts and Culture, was delivering a message of support at the Love to Live Awards ceremony at Eddels Sports Club on Friday.

    We are witnessing episodes

where kids are collapsing in schools because they are high on drugs and only through initiatives such as this can we be able to deal with such challenges, said Govender.

    The awards are in recognition

of efforts by individuals, busi-nesses and schools in ensuring that youngsters live a drug free life by engaging themselves in productive and worthwhile activities.

Govender said other towns and districts can learn a lot from the

Love to Live initiative. The ceremony drew the atten-

dance of Pietermaritzburgs lead-ing fi gures including Finance MEC Ina Cronje, uMgungundl-ovu mayor Yusuff Bhamjee, and Msunduzi mayor Chris Ndlela.

Delivering the keynote address Cronje pleaded with young people to enjoy their days as youngsters.

Right now you must live a life that is free of worry because believe me you do not want to stress yourself with a relationship and the responsibilities that come with it, said Cronje to learn-ers that came from schools who received awards.

She threw a challenge at everyone, especially community members, saying each should play a part in ensuring that youngsters are protected from a life of unpro-tected sex, drugs and other harm-ful activities.

We cannot look the other way when we hear horror stories involving children and drugs. It is up to all of us to play a role in fi ghting such challenges, said Cronje.

For the past few weeks there have been a lot of mudslinging and per-sonal attacks published. Surely it is not in the best interest of the readers that the letters to the edi-tor space is fi lled with these triv-ial issues which are of no bene-

fi t. Articles that are educational should be given preference by the editor of your widely-circulated weekly publication. The personal attacks should not be published.

Woodlands, Northdale and surrounding areas were blacked out for almost twenty two hours from about 17:15 on 20 August into the following day. Unfortu-nately, the problem manifested itself when workers were return-ing home.

Presumably, supper and home-work were compromised and can-dlelight family time was enjoyed with no soapies to be glued to. The moon was bright and lit up the affected areas one could walk into the garden in the moon-light.

Against all this there were two

attitudes prevailing; one lambast-ing the city council for outages and another small group seek-ing to fi nd out what the real prob-lem was. The latter noticed a team of determined electricians that worked through the night and late into the next day to restore our power.

Thank you to these committed electricity department staff who toiled in the low temperatures to deliver electricity to thousands. Appreciation must also go to the Good Samaritan who on arriv-ing at the substation ordered a hot meal for the exhausted electri-cians.

Senior offi cials including the mayor remained on site to sup-port the team. Exco member Cllr Inderjit and Ms Madeleine Plaaitjies-Jacksons efforts are equally acknowledged. They made every effort to keep residents in the loop. Incidentally, the problem was a circuit breaker that could no longer take the load and buckled.

Outdated infrastructure lurks in and around the city and the current leadership must ensure work is undertaken swiftly to avoid further lengthy blackouts.

    Jay Jugwanth, Northdale

The report in the Witness dated 21 August with Brian Zuma and Chris Ndlelas comments with regard to the traffi c congestion in the city cannot go unchallenged.

Cadre appointments are now being truly exposed. What level of education has prompted such a pathetic response?

Live with the situation regards the traffi c gridlock.

General rule in any city is to leave early when going to work and leave later when leaving work. What mentality do our city fathers have to even suggest such trash.

Having traffi c offi cers at inter-

sections when the robots are down is expected by the rates/taxpayers of this city.

The unwarranted expense of paving the road outside the city hall is being wasted by bad man-agement decisions. Upgrading of the infrastructure like roads, elec-tricity, sewage and other needs are where the ratepayers funds must be directed.

I say, please gentlemen, step down and let people with the required skill run the City, as you have failed miserably.

    F. ShaikScotsville

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the guys from the munic-ipal Electricty Department who worked so diligently through the

night and day on 20 and 21 August to help the people in the northern suburbs get their power back on.

With all the rumours fl ying around that the power was only

going to be restored by Saturday this was indeed a pleasant sur-prise.

We did not get a chance to say goodbye, so now we are say-ing farewell friend, until we meet again. You had your whole life ahead of you but God saw your pain and loneliness and reunited you with your parents. He needed

an angel so he chose you, leav-ing us with a void, an empty seat and memories. Memories of your bright smile, infectious laugh, carefree spirit, your ability to unite people and your belief that no man can judge you, only God can. Midlands Medical Centre (MMC) Private Hospital recently hosted a mini-fair to celebrate Womens Month (August). The fair was held in partnership with Ampath Laboratories

(pathologists), which sponsored free haemoglobin testing for ladies attending the fair. A low haemoglobin level is indica-tive of anaemia and is mainly due to low iron levels. anaemia affects a signifi cant proportion of women.

A variety of stall-holders showcased their goods at the event. About 250 MMC staff members and other ladies work-ing within the MMC precinct visited the stalls, generating a signifi cant level of sales for stall holders.

These three Springhaven Primary Grade 3 learners participated in the GET (General Education and Training) awards. (1) Aliya recited an English poem titled

Ants, (2) Amahle recited an IsiZulu poem called Uvemvane and (3) Jody recited an Afrikaans poem titled Die Kriekies Skool. They all took fi rst positions in their

categories. They have done Springhaven Primary proud.

Pictured at the event were (from left to right) Keshnee Jaijai (Ampath) and Precious Mathonsi (Midlands Medical Centre Private Hospital). Mathonsi is pictured having her haemoglobin level tested.

How you sleep affects your back, so sleeping in the proper position can help both neck and back align-ment. The fi rst two vertebrae, the atlas and axis, have the greatest amount of motion. In order to maintain proper alignment of this area one of the things you need

to pay very close attention to is the position in which you sleep. Anything you do which causes misalignment at the upper area of our neck can cause pressure on the brain stem and spinal cord, affect-ing how our body functions and, therefore, affecting our health.

It is important to sleep in a

neutral posture so we do not cause or irritate any of the alignment in the upper cervical area. Sleeping on the stomach means turning your head completely to the side in order to be able to breathe. This causes muscle contractions because of misalignments at the upper area of the neck.

Thus, it is important as you are lying down that you are in a neutral position on your back with a very thin pillow behind you, or on your side with a pillow that is approximately the width of your shoulders to help maintain your head in its neutral position.

Doing this consistently can help maintain the alignment of the upper cervical area of the neck with the head, thereby putting less pressure on the brain stem and

    spinal cordOrtho-

    pedic

    MattressesThose suffering from prob-

lems related to the back will fi nd a practical solution in the use of orthopedic mattresses, which provide support to the spine and back.

Use of a certain category of mattresses can increase the chanc-es of muscular discomfort, stiff-ness and aches. The use of ortho-pedic mattresses helps to retain the correct body-posture during sleep. This relieves unnecessary pressure points and tensions. Knowingly or unknowingly, many people become uncomfortable as they sleep, mainly because of the mattress they use. Should you be such a person, its time to under-stand how an orthopedic mattress can help you and how to choose one.

One major reason for problems experienced in the back is the

unduly prolonged use of the same mattress. You may buy a cheap mattress from a store near you, but it remains doubtful if it will at all provide the support needed while sleeping.

The design and composition of orthopedic mattresses varies a lot. Its construction may include coils and springs, or it may use memory foam or latex. You can also have an orthopedic mattress with a combination of materials.

The advantage of memory foam is that it provides even support to your body. That reduces pressure on the pressure points, thus help-ing to support the natural double S shape of the spine. Another advantage is that it can adjust itself to body temperature, thereby helping you to sleep undisturbed.

You can sleep undisturbed - check your mattress

Standing keeping one foot forward of the other, with knees slightly bent, takes the pressure off your low back.

Sitting sitting with your knees slightly higher than your hips provides good low back support.

Reaching stand on a stool to reach things that are above your shoulder level.

Moving Heavy Items pushing is easier on your back than pulling. Use your arms and legs to start the push. If you must lift a heavy item, get someone to help you.

Lifting kneel down on one knee with the other foot fl at on the fl oor as near as possible to the item you are lifting. Lift with your legs, not your back, keeping the object close to your body at all times.

Carrying two small objects (one in either hand) may be easier to handle than one large one. If you must carry one large object, keep it close to your body.

Sleeping sleeping on your back puts 55 lbs. of pressure on your back. Putting a couple of pillows under your knees cuts the pressure in half. Lying on your side with a pillow between your knees also reduces the pressure.

Weight Control additional weight puts a strain on your back. Keep within 10 lbs. of your ideal weight for a health-ier back.

Quit Smoking smokers are more prone to back pain than nonsmokers because nicotine restricts the fl ow of blood to the discs that cushion your ver-tebrae.

Minor Back Pain treat minor back pain with anti-infl ammatories and gentle stretching, followed by an ice pack.

Simple guidelines to keep your back in good shape:

The internationally wildly popular indoor football sport, Futsal, will be getting under way in KwaZulu Natal this season with a 5-a-side knockout tournament (12 players per team), on Saturday 14 Septem-ber at Carter High School in Pieter-maritzburg. The school will be the venue for all regional and national fi xtures in the province this season.

The National Futsal League will commence on Saturday, 5 October.

It will consists of eight teams from fi ve provinces KwaZulu Natal (3 teams), Western Cape (2 teams), Free State (1 team), Mpumalanga (1 team) and Gauteng (1 team). The league will be played on a home and away basis either on a Friday or Saturday evening.

Without major sponsorship since its launch in 2002, the South Afri-can Indoor Football Association (SAIFA) has struggled to create depth within the indoor football

competition, playing only regional fi xtures. This resulted in poor inter-national results.

We did not achieve very good results on the international scene mainly because we lacked experi-enced players. We can only have such players if we have a competi-tive national league from which we can select our best players, said Ebrahim Hoosen, SAIFA secretary general.

SAIFA is recognised by FIFA and South African Football Associ-ation (SAFA) and has now received a shot in the arm with R1.6 million from the 2010 FIFA World Cup Legacy Trust. But additional spon-sorship will be needed to boost the growth of Futsal and create oppor-tunities for all South Africans.

The immediate aim of the league is to create credible compe-tition and this can only be done by having a sustainable National Futsal League.

Regional teams are being formed throughout the country, with the Natal Midlands Indoor Football Association re-launching its league in Pietermaritzburg. All teams who wish to enter the league, must be registered to be able to participate in the tournament. Cost per team is R1 500, registration deadline is 7 September. FUTSAL indoor football kicks off locally

A Pietermaritzburg fresh-water fi sherman has been selected to rep-resent South Africa in the 2013 Zone 6 Bank Angling Champion-ships in Namibia in September.

Santosh Babes Balram (46) of Northdale, is the only fi sherman from KwaZulu Natal selected to represent the country.

The championships will take place at the Hardapdam in Mari-ental, Namibia, from 20 to 29 Sep-tember.

Seven anglers from South Africa will take on Namibia in the three-day contest.

I am the only angler in the Protea Team from KZN and I am really proud to represent the coun-

try. The process to reach this level is very stringent, said Balram.

The process is also very costly and unfortunately this is a non-spectator sport so all costs are borne by the anglers them-selves, hence Balram is appeal-ing for sponsors to help him get to Namibia. Each contestant must

pay R10 000. Your contribution would ena-

ble Babes to compete. It is an honour to represent your coun-try at this level and his selection follows a stringent selection pro-cess, said team manager, Martin Combrink.

Balram was awarded his National Protea Colours on 27 July this year.

Anyone who wishes to donate or sponsor Santosh can contact him on 0837854190 or 0333914450 or email [email protected]
