MANUAL FOR RAILWAY ENGINEERING The Manual for Railway Engineering (MRE) is an annual publication released every April. The Manual consists of more than 5,000 pages of railway engineering reference material, the recommended practices for the industry. It contains principles, data, specifications, plans and economics pertaining to the engineering, design and construction of the fixed plant of railways (except signals and communications), and allied services and facilities. The material is developed by AREMA technical committees and is published as a guide to railways in establishing their individual policies and practices relative to the subjects, activities and facilities covered in the Manual, with the aim of assisting them to engineer and construct a railway plant which will have inherent qualities of safe and economical operation as well as low maintenance cost. Chapters are grouped into four general categories, each in a separate volume: Track, Structures, Infrastructure and Passenger, and Systems Management. The Manual is available in print or downloadable format. Individual Chapters are also available in downloadable, PDF format.
COMMUNICATIONS & SIGNALS MANUAL The Communications & Signals Manual is an annual publication released every January. It is a manual of recommended practice written by AREMA technical committees in the interest of establishing uniformity, promoting safety or efficiency and economy. This Manual offers recommendations representing current signal practices for new installations and for replacement on existing installations when general renewal or replacement is to be made. The Manual is available in print or downloadable format. Individual Sections are also available in downloadable, PDF format.
PORTFOLIO OF TRACKWORK PLANS The Portfolio of Trackwork Plans consists of plans and specifications that relate to the design, details, materials and workmanship for switches, frogs, turnouts & crossovers, crossings, rails and other special trackwork. This is a companion volume to the Manual for Railway Engineering. The Portfolio is available in print and downloadable format.
PRACTICAL GUIDE TO RAILWAY ENGINEERING The NEW Practical Guide to Railway Engineering, Third Edition is an in-depth and excellent reference tool covering many fundamentals. It covers such topics as: Railway Development, Track Design, Structures & Electrification, Drainage, Communications & Signals, High Speed Rail, Environmental Regulations & Permitting, European Curve & Turnout Mechanics, and much more. The new edition has a fresh look, updated and expanded content with significant enhancements to the photographs, diagrams and sketches throughout the book. New additions include: Chapter 10 – Yards and Terminals and Chapter 11 – Government & Regulatory Oversight. The Practical Guide to Railway Engineering is available in a print and USB combination set.
BRIDGE INSPECTION HANDBOOKThe AREMA Bridge Inspection Handbook© provides a comprehensive source of information, criteria and is also a guide to establish best practices and policies relative to the assessment of railway bridge inspections. It covers such topics as confined spaces, site conditions, loads and forces, nomenclature, bridge decks, timber, concrete and steel bridges, movable bridges, tunnel and culvert inspections, and emergency and post-earthquake inspections. The 2nd Edition offers upgraded photographs, diagrams and sketches. Dual units and expanded content have been added throughout the book. New additions include: Chapter 15 - Underwater Inspection of Bridges and Chapter 16 - Evaluation of Bridges for Erosion and Scour at Bridges. The Handbook is available in a print and USB combination set.
GUIDELINES TO BEST PRACTICES FOR HEAVY HAUL RAILWAY OPERATIONS: WHEEL AND RAIL INTERFACE ISSUES; BOOK 1 BY THE INTERNATIONAL HEAVY HAUL ASSOCIATION (IHHA) – MAY 2001The Wheel/Rail Interface Issues focuses on the critical area of the wheel/rail contact that is so important to successful railway operations. At the interface there must be low friction to permit moving heavy loads with little resistance; however, there must be enough friction to provide tractive effort, braking effort and steering of the wheel. Neither the wear rate nor the failure rate must be so great that the cost-effective heavy haul operations are threatened. This book contains discussions on the Vehicle/Track Interactions, Wheel/Rail Interfaces, Cost Benefit analysis, Optimizing Heavy Haul Maintenance Practices and Case Studies of Successful Heavy Haul Railways. All Best Practice books include a CD-ROM.
GUIDELINES TO BEST PRACTICES FOR HEAVY HAUL RAILWAY OPERATIONS: INFRASTRUCTURES CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE ISSUES; BOOK 2 BY THE INTERNATIONAL HEAVY HAUL ASSOCIATION (IHHA) – JUNE 2009Track for Heavy Haul focuses on the issues involving the rail, track, ballast and sub-ballast for cost effective operation of heavy haul systems. The sections in this book were developed with the expertise of over 45 authors who are recognized as leading authorities in their respective fields. This book is the most complete review of all aspects of heavy haul track systems, maintenance, inspections, economics, and components assembled to date. All Best Practice books include a CD-ROM.
GUIDELINES TO BEST PRACTICES FOR HEAVY HAUL RAILWAY OPERATIONS: MANAGEMENT OF THE WHEEL AND RAIL INTERFACE; BOOK 3 BY THE INTERNATIONAL HEAVY HAUL ASSOCIATION (IHHA) – JUNE 2015This book contains discussion of wheel/rail interaction, descriptions of how to balance wear and fatigue of wheels and rails, derailment prevention practices, vehicle/track condition monitoring, and benefits of rail grinding and friction modification. All Best Practice books include a CD-ROM.
DESIGN OF MODERN STEEL RAILWAY BRIDGES BY JOHN F. UNSWORTHThis book examines the engineering properties of structural steel typically used in modern steel railway bridge design and fabrication. It presents criteria for the maximum effects from moving loads and their use in developing design live railway loads. It complements and explains the recommended practices of AREMA’s Manual for Railway Engineering (MRE) design specifications. The new edition has been updated throughout to reflect changes in the field. It encompasses current design methods used for steel railway bridges in both SI and Imperial (US Customary) units. A practical reference and learning tool, it provides a fundamental understanding of AREMA recommended practice that enables more effective design.
