Publication of Delphi Community School Corporation SPRING 2018 Cast Received Rave Reviews from the Audience Earlier this spring, the Delphi Little Theater Stage was transformed into 1890’s New York City for a wonderful production of Jerry Herman’s classic musical, Hello Dolly. The story follows several days in the life of socialite wid- ow-turned-matchmaker, Dolly Levi (Sarah Rohrer). Dolly helps her latest clients, the cantankerous “half-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder (Seth Mesaros), a young artist named Ambrose (Kevin Zabala), Horace’s niece, Ermengarde (Jessi- ca Powlen), Horace’s employees Cornelius (Noah Red Elk) and Barnaby (Aden Sinks), hat maker Irene Molloy (Kristina Powlen), and her assistant Minnie Fay (Emily Hudson) find true love and happiness. In the end, even Dolly finds love with Horace. Audience reactions to the show were incredible. There was non-stop laughter at the onstage hijinks and resounding applause for the outstanding singing. Memorable scenes included: hiding the ‘boys’ in the ladies’ hat shop, exploding tomato cans in Vandergelder’s store, and slapstick comedy in the Harmonia Gardens Restaurant. The cast, the crew and the director were all thrilled with the overall performance and they took tremendous pride in accomplishing such a show. HighSchoolDrama The cast of Hello Dolly performs on the Delphi Little Theatre stage. A great time was had by audience and cast alike, and you are invited you to come out to enjoy the Drama Department’s next production.

The Leader in Me (TLIM) Program “Wow, there is something ‘different’ about that school...” Comments such as these are what DCMS and DCES hope to hear next school year as they begin imple-menting a new program, which has been two years in the making. The Leader in Me (TLIM) is Franklin Covey’s whole-school transformation process, which teaches twenty-first century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader. At Leader in Me schools, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Peo-ple, which is the book that TLIM is based on, has become a central focus for all staff and students.

Many staff members from DCES and DCMS have had the chance tovisit other Leader in Me schools across the state in an effort to bring theprogram here. Our staff members have been amazed at what those schools and their students have accomplished, and this is something that we want for our students. We are confident that as our students grow in their leadership skills and in the Seven Habits, the change will be evident to anyone who enters our doors.

iad of emotions. The audience experienced laughter, tears, joy, and pain as the thoughtful and heartfelt words of our students were spoken.

Some of this year’s essay topics included depression and anxiety, being a child of divorce, being the proud daughter of two immigrants, the importance of family, the magic in simplicity, and healing after the loss of loved ones.

It is clear that DCHS has some extremely talented students who have important thoughts and ideas to share. Audience members left with a feeling of pride in the hard work of these students as well as a sense of confidence that the future will be in good hands with these young adults in control.

The DCHS English department is appreciative of the local support of the Delphi Opera House, the Sandwich Shop, the Delphi Educational Foundation, the Delphi Pub-lic Library, and Wabash National, for continued financial support of this program.

HighSchoolBracketology Club Improves Mark Delphi Community High School’s Bracketology Club has once again received national recognition for its phenomenal bracket-crunching abil-ity. The club, which is made up of ten stu-dents and three teach-ers, meets on Thurs-day mornings before school during the fall and winter to begin breaking down the brackets by analyzing data, making comparisons, and discussing teams’ strength of schedules in addition to engaging in lively debates.

This year, the club bested the record that it set last year, by picking forty-seven out of sixty-eight correct seed rankings for this year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The club has received media attention both on a local and a national level, most recently being touted in an article pub-lished in the New York Times.

Pom Team Competes/Completes Season The Delphi Community High School Pom Team, under the direction of Kaila Brooks, completed its season with a third place finish in the Varsity A Pom division at the IHSDTA State Championships in New Castle, Indi-ana. First place finishes at the McCutcheon High School Invitational, the Kokomo High School Invitational, and the Greenfield Central Invitational paved the way to State, in addition to 6:00 A.M. rehearsals two to three times a week, competitions every other weekend, performances at all home football and basketball games, and one week of dance camp during summer vacation.

The dedication of these athletes is second to none. According to Delphi Community High School Athletic Director Kevin Sims, “This group of young ladies has been unbelievable all year long...most people do not realize the hours that this group spends practicing and competing. I am proud of Kaila Brooks and her dancers--they worked hard, competed well, and they had fun. They are a true source of pride for our entire community.”

For the second consecutive year, the DCHS English department gave students a voice throgh the “This I Believe” essay contest. On Tuesday, March 6, over two hundred people flocked to the Delphi Opera House for the second annual DCHS “This I Believe” event, where members of the community were invited to hear students bring their written words to life in a public recitation of their essays. The motto for the evening was, “Bringing people together--one essay at a time,” and this year’s event truly united all who were in attendance.

The historic ballroom at the Delphi Opera House was the perfect venue for an evening filled with powerful words from some of Delphi’s most talented student writers. Sixteen students (four from each grade level), read their award-winning essays as the crowd was captivated by a myr-

Project Lead the Way Update The Project Lead the Way classes at Delphi Commu-nity Middle School have been creating a myriad of projects designed to help people, to solve a problem, and to have fun! Their latest project ended in a “Pull Toy Parade” through the school to showcase their hard work to our students and staff.

As we begin to implement the program’s second year, students will have the opportunity to delve into creating apps, which they are already very excited about. The PLTW App Creators curriculum will expose students to computer science by computationally analyzing and devel-oping solutions to authentic problems through mobile app development, and will convey the positive impact of the application of computer science to other disciplines and to society.

Students will customize their experience by choosing a problem that interests them from the areas of health,

Football Signing Day at DCMS A new tradition has begun at Delphi Community Mid-dle School. DCHS head football coach Josh Strasser has implemented a “Signing Day” for our eighth grade athletes who are interested in playing football in high school. Much like the traditional National Letter of Intent signings that high school student-athletes participate in when declaring their commitment to participating NCAA colleges and uni-versities, our eighth grade students signed a form indicating their intent to play football for Delphi Community High School.

This event not only provided our students with the opportunity to begin planning for their future, but it also serves as a lasting memory that our students will be able to carry with them long after their days on the gridiron have passed.

There are NEW immunization requirements for incoming sixth and twelfth graders, beginning with the 2018-2019 school year. Students in both grade levels must now have the two-dose series for Hepatitis A in addition to the previously required shots. Please arrange to have your student fully immunized before the school year begins in August.

DCES Talent Show Turn down the lights and pull back the curtain! The students at DCES are preparing for their upcoming talent show, which will be held on Thursday, May 17 at 6:30 P.M. This event is open to all students in Grades 1-5 and we invite all interested students to participate, because our school is FILLED with talent!

Students will be auditioning for a spot in the show on Monday, May 7 from 3:15-5:00 P.M. Students wishing to audition should come prepared with a complete act up to three minutes in length, along with costumes, props, and music to enhance the routine. Students are asked to create fun and entertaining routines. Possible ideas for talent show acts include singing, dancing, gymnastics, comedy acts, juggling, martials arts performances, sports acts, magic acts, and cheerleading, but the sky’s the limit!

It is always amazing to see what our students come up with, and it is certainly a proud moment for all to see the students shine on stage. The show is open to the public, so come and join us on May 17!
