MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR/PRESIDENT

June 2013

Dear Parents and Students,

Another academic year is winding down, as we celebrate the graduation of our seniors, and the freshmen, sophomores and juniors finish their classes and take exams. Come mid-June, our school community will take a well-deserved break for the summer months.

It is important to assess at year’s end the work we have been engaged in together. In what ways have we grown as a home, school, church and playground according to the model for his works established by St. John Bosco? And in what ways can we develop further?

To this end, we have numerous meetings over these weeks of various groups in the school community, gatherings for evaluation and assessment. Such meetings will enable our Administrative Team to plan well over the summer months for the ongoing growth of Don Bosco Prep. As you know, there is no standing still in life; if we are not moving forward, we are falling behind.

These are weeks of leave taking as well. In early June, 179 seniors will take their leave of us. Many of them arrived here four years ago as young boys. But they are leaving as young men, hopefully empowered for life. We are grateful for all they added to our school community.

Two generous and long-serving educators are retiring this month. Dr. Heidi Rohrs began teaching here in 1984, and for 29 years she has been the mainstay of our German Program. It has been a real mission for her, to teach the German language and to share the German culture. And it has been a mission of love, as she has been so kind and solicitous of our students.

Sr. Mary Culhane, SC, began teaching here in 1982, and for 31 years she has been the mainstay of our Fine Arts Program. Over the years she has drawn forth the creative talents of students while imparting a genuine love of beauty. And in keeping with the spirit of the Sisters of Charity, she has reached out and been a distinct friend to students struggling with family, health or personal challenges.

Also leaving us is Br. Minh Dang, SDB. With us only two years, he has won the affection of our students, particularly the underclassmen, for his simplicity, joy and brotherly presence. Br. Minh has discerned a missionary call from God, and so he offered himself to the Rector Major of the Salesians for work anywhere in the world. The Rector Major accepted his offering and has assigned him to the Middle East Province of the Salesians, composed of the countries of Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey and Iran.

Our heartfelt thanks to all those taking leave – our graduates, Dr. Rohrs, Sr. Mary and Br. Minh – and our prayers that their futures unfold graciously under God’s care.

Cordially,

Father James Heuser, SDB Director/President

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

June 2013 Dear Parents and Guardians, It’s almost impossible for me to believe that we’ve come to the end of another school year already! As you read this bulletin, we have just finished our commencement exercises and the underclassmen will be approaching their final days of classes. Congratulations to all of our graduates as well as their families, as they embark on a new chapter in their lives! The underclassmen still have some final business to attend to before heading off for summer vacation. Please be sure to read carefully the final examination schedule, which will be posted online in the coming days, and remember that any absence from an exam must have either prior permission directly from the principal or an absence note from a doctor. Ensure that your sons prepare well for these exams; they are a vital way of assessing students through giving them the opportunity to synthesize what they have learned during the second semester of the school year. Also, please look closely at the summer reading assignments for the coming months. As I have said so many times before, successful students are, almost without exception, those who are avid readers. While the summer is a time for relaxation and recharging, we must continue to exercise the mind through active reading. The selections for this summer were chosen based on their literary value, as well as their readability for young men. One suggestion: read the books with your son and find occasion to discuss them during the summer months. You will be surprised at the benefits of sharing literature together as a family! Finally, St. John Bosco said that “education is a matter of the heart.” You have entrusted your sons and your hearts to us this past year, and I am grateful for the partnership we have formed. Thank all of you for the many contributions you have made to the school community through your gifts and talents. Know of my love for your sons and my great admiration for the job you have done in raising such fine young men. Enjoy the summer months, and to our Senior parents- may God continue to bless you as you watch your sons create their futures. In Don Bosco,

John Stanczak John Stanczak, Principal

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

Let me take this opportunity to congratulate the Class of 2013 on their graduation which is now only

days away. While your student experience at “The Prep” may be coming to a conclusion, we hope that

you will continue your involvement in your school by participating in alumni events and returning to DBP

to cheer on The Ironmen. No matter where life’s journey may take you, you will always be a member of

the Don Bosco family. Enjoy the summer. You have earned it. Move forward with the knowledge that

you prepared for the next chapter in your life. Again, CONGRATULATIONS!

I have noted the following information numerous times in the past, but believe the issues bear

repeating:

For those that are returning to “The Prep” again next year, please be reminded that the current

dress code, as defined in the Agenda, will continue. Since the desired attire has been well

documented, and adequate notifications have been made, the school will rigidly enforce the

dress code in the days to come. Students and parents should not wait until the waning days of

summer to contact Flynn and O’Hara for orders/questions. Please attend to uniform issues in a

timely manner to avoid problems at the beginning of the next academic year. Incoming Seniors

and their parents are reminded that there is no “Senior Exemption” to the dress code.

The parents of incoming Freshmen may find the Agenda/Handbook on the Don Bosco website.

Utilize the “Offices” prompt and then “Administrative”. You will find the handbook prompt on

the left side of the page. The new version of the Handbook will be available online after 7/1/13.

Please be reminded that when wearing the regulation shorts, a student may only wear “solid

white sneakers-nothing above the ankle” and “solid white socks…..”ankle to mid-calf in length”.

Please refer to the Agenda, if you should have any questions. “Hi-tops” and/or footwear other

than plain, solid white are not acceptable.

Please note the cell phone restrictions that are noted in the Handbook/Agenda. Parents are

requested to re-enforce in their young men the appropriate use of social media and the

potential consequences of technology-use missteps. While I wrote extensively about this subject

in the April 2013 Newsletter, I believe it bears repeating

While athletics play a significant role in many students’ lives, the involvement in sports does not

exempt the student from their other responsibilities. Student/Athletes that have a mandated

after-school academic program or detention may not self-exempt themselves for athletic-

related functions. The participation in athletics at DBP is a privilege and not a right.

Your cooperation is essential in assuring that “The Prep” continues the tradition of providing a quality

Catholic education which emphasizes spiritual, academic and physical growth, while striving to instill a

sense of discipline and ethics that will shape the future of our Ironmen. Please accept my best wishes for

a safe and enjoyable summer. Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns

Regards,

Ed Nekel

From The Office of Youth Ministry

“Help one another. This is what Jesus teaches us. This is

what I do. And I do it with my heart” Pope Francis

In the past month our school community celebrated our heavenly mother’s feast

under the title of Mary Help of Christians. It was on this day that our juniors

became the leaders of our student body. I pray that they continue to show their

leadership qualities in the coming year. Every year I ask our upperclassmen to

participate in the various programs that the Youth Ministry office offers, the largest

of which is the Big Brother program. The current Juniors who decide they want to

be involved in this program that help our incoming freshmen assimilate to their

new school community. I have also invited the upcoming Seniors to participate in

our mission trip to Nicaragua in February 2014 and to become Eucharistic

Ministers for the coming year.

In the past month our students have been turning in their service hours log

forms to show they have completed their requirements. I would like to remind all

the parents and students that it is important that the service hours be turned in and

updated before the end of the year. The service hour form can be found in the

school website on the youth ministry office page under “Links and Resources”.

The student handbook states that each student must complete 100 hours of

community service by graduation: 15 hours by the end of Freshmen year, 30 hours

at the end of Sophomore year, and 70 hours by the end of Junior year. I ask all the

parents to make sure that their son fulfill their requirement. If you have any

questions regarding your service hours please contact either myself or Mr.

Khanjian in the youth ministry office.

School will soon be winding down. I will take this time to take care of some “housekeeping” to make the end of 2012-2013 and the beginning of 2013-2014 run smoothly.

Medications/Supplies/Asthma Action Plan/Allergy Action Plans -Before school ends, please have your son pick up any medications, diabetic supplies/ snacks, or nebulizer equipment that has been in the Health Office during the school year. I will be here until June 14

th. Meds will need to be picked up prior to that date or

they will be discarded. - if your son will require any medication administration during school or has permis-sion to carry any meds for the school year 2013-2014, please take the time over the summer to complete the Medication Authorization form. They are available to down-load from the Health Office section of the Don Bosco website. No meds, even over-the-counter meds, can be given or carried by a student unless this paperwork is complet-ed and the medication is given to me in September. -If your son has asthma or severe allergies, I will provide you with the Asthma or Aller-gy Action Plans to be filled out by your son’s physician over the summer.

Physicals Keep in mind that physicals are good for 365 days. Therefore, for example, a physical done in March of 2012 is good until March 2013. Summer may be a good time to get paperwork in order for the upcoming year. The forms required for physicals can be downloaded from the Health Office section of the Don Bosco Prep website. If your son has asthma or allergies, bring the asthma action plan or allergy action plan to the doctor’s appointment. This will make things easier.

I will not be in the office after June 14th. I will return in September just before school

starts. If you anticipate any questions, call me prior to that date. Hope that you have a wonderful summer!! Mrs. Cena RN, School Nurse

Project Child Find Attention Parents of Students in Non-Public Schools

Is a child in your life developing differently or having problems learning? If

so, help is available for eligible children.

The Region V Council for Special Education is sponsoring a Child Find

public awareness campaign to locate and provide services for unserved/

underserved youth, including migrant and homeless children, with a delay

or disability from birth through twenty-one years of age. Children may ex-

hibit physical, mental, language, or emotional difficulties.

How to Make a Referral

1. If your child is 5-21 years of age - If you would like to request an eval-

uation for special education classification, send a written request for an eval-

uation to your school principal. Include your child’s name, age, address and

suspected disability.

2. If your child is ages 3-4 that written request must be sent to the special

education department in the town where you live.

3. If your child is under the age of 3 - If your child should be crawling,

walking or talking but isn’t, call for information about resources and ser-

vices for your child under age 3. The New Jersey Early Intervention System

statewide toll-free number is 1-888-NJ-EI-INFO (1-888-653-4463).

A meeting will then be held with you and a team of evaluators who will de-

cide if an evaluation is needed and what the evaluation will include. They

will also review what interventions have already been put in place and by

reviewing data will make a determination if the intervention is helping your

child or if further interventions are needed prior to an evaluation.

If your child is found eligible for Special Education services, an Individual

Service Plan (ISP) will be developed. Please be aware that special education

services detailed in an ISP (Individual Service Plan) for students in a non-

public school may be limited.

You as a parent also have the right to request and evaluation from the spe-

cial education department in the town where you live for your child to be eli-

gible for FAPE (Free and Appropriate Public Education). If a child is classi-

fied in a public school district, they are entitled to all services needed as per

their Individualized Education Program (IEP).
