Green InfrastructureMeasure M Street Investments: Watershed Management

Runoff enters the basin at the boulders from an underground pipe.

The planted basin collects and partially absorbs water.

Then runoff filters through a soil layer designed to filter pollutants.

Some water infiltrates to replenish groundwater. Water that is not able to infiltrate enters a pipe.

Cleaner water joins the storm drain network and heads to Strawberry Creek, eventually flowing into the San Francisco Bay.

How does the Rain Garden Work?

1. Stormwater runoff from Allston Way enters the basin from an inlet.

2. An underground pipe carries the water to the bioretention basin.

3. Water infiltrates through the basin, and collects in an underground pipe.

4. Clean water is directed to the storm drain system on California Street.

What is a Rain Garden? When it rains, stormwater runs off roof tops, sidewalks, and streets, picking up motor oils, metals, pesticides, trash, and pet waste. The polluted water flows into storm drains, creeks, and ultimately into the San Francisco Bay.

Green infrastructure is a method for managing stormwater that integrates sustainable features such as plants and water reuse to provide multiple benefits. Rain gardens are one example of green infrastructure.

A rain garden collects stormwater in a shallow basin filled with carefully selected plants and well-draining soil. The plants and soils, along with soil-based microorganisms, clean the water by filtering and breaking down pollutants. The clean stormwater returns to the storm drain system or soaks into the native soil, replenishing groundwater.

Rain gardens can also beautify neighborhoods, provide bird and butterfly habitat, and reduce localized flooding.

Measure M Investments in the Strawberry Creek WatershedThe Strawberry Creek Watershed includes an urban stream that surfaces in places and then flows underground, eventually joining the city’s drainage network and entering the San Francisco Bay.

This rain garden in Presentation Park (A) plays a vital role in cleaning stormwater runoff before it enters Stawberry Creek, surfacing just a few blocks west in Strawberry Creek Park.

This project is funded by Measure M, the Streets and Watershed bond passed by Berkeley voters in November 2012. Measure M investments improve watershed health and street conditions by integrating green infrastructure such as swales, rain gardens and permeable paving.

Additional projects funded by Measure M to improve water quality in this watershed include the bioretention basin at Spruce and Vine (B) and the permeable pavement block at Allston Way (C).
