PUBLIC SPEAKING FROM TOAST MASTERS

Reece Ristau

• For some people public speaking can be the hardest thing in the world for them

• There is a lot of people, the opportunity to publicly speak in front of strangers gives them the chills and most would like to avoid it at all costs

• Famous comedian Jerry Seinfeld was spoke about public speaking on stage noting that for most people, it was their number one fear, only to be immediately followed by death

• Now I have personally been speaking publicly for years and I want to assure you that it isn’t that bad once you learn some of the basics and try it a few times

• I have compiled the list following this slide to give you a better sense of how to properly give a speech and avoid being scared

• Enjoy and please feel free to share!

GIVE THE AUDIENCE SOMETHING TO TAKE HOME:

• When giving a public speech, you will want to give the audience something they can do very soon and in a very short period of time

• This tactic will force the audience to think about how they will accomplish their task rather than what you are doing at that moment

• The audience will also be very appreciative to learn something new and will most likely me excited to do it as soon as possible

NEVER DEFER QUESTIONS:• As a public speaker you will often encounter someone that needs

to ask their question in the middle of your speech

• Always make sure you answer their question no matter if you were in the middle of a sentence

• If people are asking questions, it means they are listening and they are interested in what you have to say

• Your words provoked someone to think on a deeper level and gave them confidence enough to speak in public as well

ASK A QUESTION YOU DON’T HAVE THE ANSWER TO:

• This one may seem a little strange at first but when you think about it, it makes sense

• Asking a question to your audience can be a little tough as some people aren't comfortable answering but you never know if you’ll get an answer

• When you ask the question it gives you time to breathe, collect yourself, and take a drink of water

• It also shows the audience you are human and care about what they think too

IT ALL STARTS WITH PREPARATION:

• Before any presentation it's important to be in the right state of mind so you can perform at your highest potential

• Be sure to have a healthy breakfast, loaded with protein so that your mind will by firing on all cylinders and you won’t be thinking about food on stage

• Believe it or not, a healthy meal is a key part of the foundation for a presentation

KEEP CORTISOL AT BAY:• Cortisol is a public speaker's worst enemy

• When cortisol reaches peak levels it can be extremely difficult to read and can lead to a total breakdown in your speech

• I strongly recommend working out, walking, or engaging in some type of exercise before any speech to burn off existing cortisol in your body to ensure you know exactly what to do and what to say
