Honors Courses in North Carolina:Career and Technical Education
Courses eligible forhonors
Revised February 2010
To be eligible for honors, courses must meet the requirements ofthe North Carolina State Board of Education Honors Policy GCSL-004, revised October 2009. Except as specifically noted, a CTEHonors Teaching Preparation Portfolio must be developed prior toa course being offered for honors credit. An Honors TeachingPreparation Portfolio includes detailed information about how thestandard course has been increased in rigor to qualify students forhonors credit. Additional information about the Honors TeachingPreparation Portfolio appears in this document.
Postsecondary CoursesAccording to State Board of Education policy, studentsenrolled in community college courses that are in theComprehensive Articulation Agreement earn 1 extraweighted quality point. This also applies to courses at afour-year college or university that are equivalent to thecommunity college courses.
In addition, students enrolled in courses at a four-yearcollege or university at the 300 or 400 level earn 2 extraweighted quality points.
Postsecondary courses that do not fall into one of theabove groups are not eligible for weighted credit. Refer tothe document Reporting Enrollment in Career andTechnical Education for specific information on usingcourse codes to ensure students receive the properweighted quality points for postsecondary courses.
Inherently honors coursesThe State Board of Education policy provides for thefollowing second-level Project Lead the Way courses toearn 2 extra weighted quality points. Students who takethese courses can take an examination that qualifies themfor college credit.

• 8020 PLTW Introduction to Engineering Design• 8021 PLTW Principles of Engineering• 8022 PLTW Digital Electronics
The Project Lead the Way courses listed above areinherently honors. An Honors Teaching PreparationPortfolio is not required. All students enrolled in thesecourses automatically receive honors weighted credit.
State pilot courses are not eligible for honors.
If a Local Course Option is to be offered for honors, the rationaleshould be documented as part of the LCO approval process.
Local school and LEA administrators must ensure that only thosecourses eligible and approved for honors are coded to receivehonors credit.
CTE honors courses are designed to be developed and conductedto demand more challenging involvement than standard CTEcourses. They must be demonstrably more challenging thanstandard courses and provide multiple opportunities for studentsto take greater responsibility for their learning. CTE honorscourses should be distinguished by a difference in the quality ofthe work expected rather than merely by the quantity.
Career and Technical Education honors courses should bedesigned for students who have demonstrated an advanced levelof interest and achievement in a given subject area. The rationalefor honors courses is not to provide a means to attact students toenroll in courses for additional credit, but rather to offerchallenging, higher level courses for students who aspire to anadvanced level of learning. Furthermore, students and parentsshould be informed that CTE honors courses are moredemanding and have requirements beyond those of standard CTEcourses.
The aims of CTE honors courses are to promote:• Opportunities for advanced work..• Rigorous study of CTE content areas.• Practical application of knowledge and skills.• Transfer of knowledge and skills to work-based
situations.
