PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Cancelled / Postponed events Unfortunately, I had to send this message on Facebook last week: **COVID-19 Restrictions Update** These are very testing times !! On Monday 17 August, we received an update on the restrictions re: COVID-19 and we are now meant to

have tougher measures in place to protect everyone in our school community. It all surrounds the notion of being able to trace where the outbreaks are coming from, so the NSW Government and NSW Health have asked that we implement these new measures to hopefully, stop the spread and in the event of an outbreak within our

Page 2: Public School Lidcombe 2141

school, we can trace quickly from whence it came. As a result, further restrictions apply and activities on hold for Term 3 are:- • Kindergarten orientation (though we are working on an online model) • School camps • Excursions • School or community run playgroups • Face to face professional learning for staff. Students to socially distance in ‘cohort groups’ eg. Stage 3. • No parent and carer attendance at assemblies and other school events. If you have to come into the office for any reason, you will have to sign in with contact details, so if there is an outbreak, we can trace the source. • Parent and carer volunteers – e.g. parent reading helpers (note: canteen and uniform shop volunteers are permitted) • School-based activities that involve large gathering of adults. These include parent/community gatherings such as parent functions, working bees, fundraisers, school BBQs, large parent information evenings, and large on-site cultural events. • Interschool sport, drama, debating and other events that are not within the local community or zone including gala days and regional sporting carnivals. • Certain large arts and sports events are cancelled or delayed. Many large-scale arts events and sports tournaments rely upon feeder activities and have long-lead time organisational arrangements. As a consequence, a number of annual activities are planned to be delayed or cancelled (refer to Impacts on arts and sports events programs). What does this mean for us: Unfortunately, we have had to cancel or postpone the following events: • Community Celebration Day (Cancelled) - we will continue the same theme for 2021. Miss Quinnell and Miss Gu will still be our organisers and we will continue with the same organisation and theme as this year. We did discuss moving CCD to Term 4, but that would place too much pressure on the students and teachers with the amount of programs we have in Term 4 to then add on top. • K-2 Athletics Carnival (Postponed) – I have spoken to SOPAC (Warm Up Arena) and have asked for a date in Term 4, hopefully around Week 6. With it being a public venue, there are concerns over the toilets and equipment cleaning. And then of course, we have bus travel. Fingers crossed for next term. • Green Event (modified) - Like last term, we will give the students a choice between an ice block and ice cream, but also have a "Sports Mufti Day" where the

students can dress in their favourite sporting jersey. Date to be announced. • Platinum Excursion (Postponed) - large amount of kids at the moment 83 and they are cross cohort (K-6), which we are not meant to do. Add to that, that we plan to take them to the movies (confined space) and travel by bus, makes this difficult to do. Hopefully, we can arrange it in Term 4, take up to 120 students on 2 buses, when restrictions have eased. • PSSA Sport continues but there is a change - Girls League Tag will now play at Wyatt Park, as there needs to be less than 100 people at each venue. Parents still not allowed to attend. • Dance2bfit (modified) - open the folding hall door and spread groups, instructor remain on stage, restrict singing of songs, maybe instructor wearing mask, see if her microphone can tune into our system. • Review meetings continue - distance chairs • SRC, Eco Kids (Postponed) until next term • Canteen (modified) - B1 3-6, B2 Stage 1 • Play equipment (Postponed) - Mr Lewis considering, probably will have to close due to cleaning after use • Banking volunteers continue - masks and temp testing • Uniform volunteers continue • Camps (considering) - parent survey to be sent out for both camps to gauge parent interest - not looking good. • Social distancing during staff meetings • Zone athletics in Term 4 (considering) - wont happen under the current restrictions, will see what happens in 6 weeks This is all very upsetting news, not only for us, but for our students (particularly Year 6) and our parents too. We have tried to sort out alternative measures, but when the State Government and NSW Health mandate changes to stop the spread, we need to play our part too. Sorry to be the bearer of such bad news.

Parent and Carer webinar - eSafety After a few issues concerning after school use of social media and particular violent games, it was quite timely a parent from our school community would send me an email about this free webinar for parents and carers about the popular apps and games that children are using nowadays. These issues are becoming more prevalent in our society, and our school community, so I implore you to make time to log on to one of these webinars. https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/rt/9112156844257168398 eSafety’s parent guide to popular apps, taking a look at TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and YouTube. Join the eSafety Commissioner’s expert education and training team for our National Child Protection Week parent/carer webinars. This live webinar (no cost), focuses on popular apps used by young people. It will include case studies, research, and targeted advice so you can support the young people in your life to have safe, enjoyable online experiences. • Tuesday 8 September 12:30 pm • Wednesday 9 September 7:30 pm • Thursday 10 September 12:30 pm Thank you Mrs. Nursen Oz for sending this through. Together, as a school community, we can make online places safe for our children, provided we inform ourselves and stay ahead of the game. I am always available for a chat about such issues if you have concerns.

We will also ask you to come to the school office in week 1 of Term 4 (12-16 October) to pick up a ‘dilly’ bag full of goodies and worksheets so your children can complete them. Activities with video instructions, guest speakers videos will appear each Thursday next term on these dates:

Thursday 22 October 2020

Thursday 29 October 2020

Thursday 5 November 2020

Thursday 12 November 2020

Thursday 19 November 2020

Thursday 26 November 2020

Thursday 3 December 2020

There is also a dedicated website (which we will send you the link for) so that if the activities can’t be done on the Thursday, can be done at a later stage, or even repeated over the Christmas holidays, depending on how keen your child is to complete the work.

If you have already completed an Application for Enrolment form for your Kindergarten child you will automatically receive further details about these sessions as they become available. If you would like to read some general information about enrolling in a NSW public school please refer to the Department of Education and Training website link:- www.schools.nsw.edu.au/media/downloads/gotoschool/enrolment/detsef.pdf

Kindergarten students will start school on Thursday 4 February 2021. Of course, parents and Kindergarten students will be called in before that for their Best Start Interview – times to be announced.

Outstanding work – Mrs Tokyurek Last year, syllabus writers for Turkish Community Language contacted me to see if we would release Mrs Tokyurek to help them create and finalise the new syllabus documents for Turkish. Mrs Tokyurek was recognised as a very thorough professional with the ability to think creatively about what community language learners need. The length and breadth of her work (along with others) can be found in this link: http://openlanguage.org.au/turkish-topics/ We are immensely proud of what you have been able to contribute to education Mrs Tokyurek!!!

Child Protection lessons The mandatory Child Protection Program will commence K-6 in Term 3. Statistics indicate that child sexual assault is far too prevalent within our society. In response to these statistics, the Department of School Education has designed a program that is to be implemented in schools. As a result of the program students will understand that those who commit child sexual assault are doing something wrong and unacceptable, develop their

Page 4: Public School Lidcombe 2141

competence in protecting themselves and develop a capacity to participate in positive relationships with family and friends. Children need to know about sexual assault, but simply knowing doesn’t protect them. They need to be taught the skills of how to protect themselves. Parents need to support the program and follow up what is being taught at school. There are three strands to the program. They are: Recognising Abuse, Power in Relationships and Protective Strategies. Please note that correct terminology will be used to name body parts in relevant lessons. If you have any concerns regarding the program please contact the school.

Online Enrolment We are excited to announce we will be are rolling out the new Online Enrolment System from Monday, 10 August 2020. The Online Enrolment System is designed to provide flexibility for our parents to submit an enrolment application online and at the time that best suits you. The application can be accessed on all browsers and mobile devices including iOS and Android. The online application process is currently restricted to:

Enrolments into local schools only

Children who are Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents

Children who live in NSW. We offer our support and encourage you to complete your application to enrol online. If, however, you do not feel comfortable completing an application online, a paper copy will be available for collection from the front office or can be downloaded from the Department’s going to a public school site. Further information about online enrolment can be found on our website here .

Premier’s Sporting Challenge The Challenge includes a range of initiatives with one common purpose - to have more students, more active, more of the time! The Premier's Sporting Challenge aims to engage young people in sport and physical activity and encourages them to lead healthy, active lifestyles. Sport plays an important role in developing regular physical activity, provides positive health outcomes and is a fun and healthy way to connect with your local community. We invite students to take up the Challenge - and take the path to a healthier life.

Students can strive for the Bronze Award (210 minutes a week or 30 minutes a day), Silver Award (315 minutes a week or 45 minutes a day), Gold Award (420 minutes a week or 60 minutes a day) and Diamond Award (560 minutes a week or 80 minutes a day). Students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 only have to colour in a picture to register that they had been physically active for the day. For our school, we have started to collect how many minutes we have been active for (inside and outside of school) from Week 2 of Term 3 (because of the COVID-19 situation) until Week 10 of Term 3. We hope to replicate the success of last year by attaining a DIAMOND AWARD again. Even the staff will be participating in the staff challenge – we will let you know the details of our end of year event very soon! (More details later). Get out there boys and girls and get active!

SASS Recognition week SASS Recognition Week is a week where we recognise the outstanding work of our lovely ladies in the office, our sensational teacher’s aides, Mr Rush our GA and Mr Manalo our Tech Advisor - we are so lucky to have these amazing, positive people as part of our school community. If you see them, say a big thank you for all they do, or send the school an email with a story about something terrific they have done for you or your child. (Missing: Mr Sage, Mrs Johnson, Mrs Teasel, Ms Wannous).

Just a reminder The earliest time students should arrive at school is 8.30am. Any earlier than this means that I can’t guarantee their safety as a teacher will not be on the playground to supervise students until 8.30am. Please ensure your children arrive no earlier than 8.30am for their safety’s sake.

Sensational work ! My most favourite time of the week is any time students visit me with tremendous work. Over the last two weeks, 3/6R have been visiting me a lot and I am blown away by the amount of improvement I am seeing

Page 5: Public School Lidcombe 2141

for these wonderful students. Omar, Jad and Ali all read to me and it wasn’t only their fluency that had improved, their expression has as well, which enables them to get more meaning from the story they read. Well done boys !

3/6R also did some music activities with Mrs Scillitani and not only did they have fun, they actually composed some of their very own tunes. Haajar and Christian happily showed me and clapped out for me their tunes. So good !!!

Ethan and Liam from 1A wrote some excellent narratives about tree frogs, that also contained some very unique information about them. These boys are only in year 1 and their standard of writing was sensational !!!

Superstars from 6Q, Jessica, Angelin and Brian, showed me a video advertisement they made for Luna Park, complete with some bloopers too. Their ideas were wonderful and they presented a well thought out advertisement, that they created in their own time, outside of school. Well done Jess, Angelin and Brian !!!

The other afternoon, I dropped in on 1G to find these boys smashing their mathematics work but creating sums to 20 and 50. They were so engaged and so enthusiastic, but guess what time all of this was happening ??? It was 2.50pm in the afternoon – goes to show you how dedicated our students and teachers are towards learning when you get such excitement at the end of a long school day !!! (Picture next page)

Page 6: Public School Lidcombe 2141

Just yesterday, these legends from 1X, Makaveli, Selin and Ryan, who traced their hands in their Maths grid books, and then worked out the area (in square centimetres) of their hands by counting the squares inside the lines. I just love how keen they were to show me and talk about their work.

Ms Ward asked me to include Noah and Sophia from 3T who met the challenge set for them in their number bonds work. Sensational work guys !!!

And finally, some excellent recount writing by Ayah in 2F about the Minibeasts experience we had in the hall this week. Ayah was using her wonderful word dictionary to aid in her recount writing and as such, did a wonderful job of spelling most words !!! Well done Ayah !!

Definitely, #LPSistheplacetobe !!!!

Wet Weather Coming to school when it is wet is certainly a difficult thing to do. I have had a number of requests from parents about the wearing of gum boots or wellingtons to school when it is wet and my answer is of course they can !!! Last thing I want is for students to have cold, wet feet all day at school – this is how students develop a cold or flu. Whilst we are talking about inclement weather, we can’t use the rain as an excuse to stay home away from school. The students are well looked after at school with air conditioning in every room. Even though it isn’t a pleasant experience to come out in bad weather, if your child is well, they should definitely be at school.

Worrying behaviour before and after school Whilst on wet weather, it seems the rain brings out the worst behaviours in some of parents around the school, before and after school. Just because it is raining, doesn’t mean you can park anywhere you want, let students out of the car in the middle of the road, use the disabled parking sport when you are not disabled, park on the pedestrian crossing, perform dangerous U turns near the bottom gate, argue with other parents (or even me) about what constitutes a parking spot, perform dangerous 3 point turns on Doodson Ave or park across our neighbours driveways. To be honest, I’m sick of dealing with these issues, so I have arranged for the rangers to do regular visits to book parents doing the wrong thing. Hopefully a sting to the back pocket will curb some of this worrying behaviour. In the end, all that matters is the children’s safety – compromise that and I hope you do get fined !

Page 7: Public School Lidcombe 2141

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition Stage 3 and Stage 2 conducted their Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition finals over the last two weeks, and weren’t they keenly contested competitions ! In both competitions, I was blown away with their mature presentations, outstanding eye contact and voice projection, as well as how well they handled some very adult topics. Two winners were chosen from each Stage to represent us, but really, they are all winners with their very high standard of public speaking. Stage 2 winners: Kate (3T) and Penelope (4C) Stage 3 winners: Stephani (5/6A) and Tora (6F) Thanks to both Mrs Matthews and Miss Fisher for their professional handling of these competitions during these COVID times, and thanks to all the parents who joined us on Zoom to watch the speeches.

Platinum Award Ceremony Being Green suggests that your child is behaving very well and is doing what our teachers expect of them in the classroom and the playground. These awards in its current format have been running for over 3 years now. In our first assemblies back since COVID-19 started, we have now moved to holding a 15 minute ceremony, alternating between 3-6 and K-2 each week. We will continue to livestream them on Facebook so parents can see. Our award winners for the last fortnight were:- Week 5 (3-6) – Daniel Kim (5B), Celine Tu (4B), Elisha Uhm (6Q), SiRui Chen (3B), Jacob Song (6Q), Nelson Lopes (3A), Kerem Kargin (3B), Gisele Zu (3T), Mirhat Ozel (3A), Tiffany Chen (4B). Week 6 (K-2) – Berke Celik (2M), Aydin Arican (2B) Samir Issa (2M). Well done students !

Reminder: Current Pick up arrangements Pick up arrangements are as follows: KB, KD, KQ & KK - Front gates near the office. KC, KP and KW - Keating Street gates near Arabic room. Year 1 - Double gates closest to Block B on Mills Street Year 2 - Doodson Ave Pedestrian gate near the Basketball Court Years 3 and 4 - Back gate near Oz Education Years 5 and 6 will work out with their parents where they will meet them and go out the nearest gate. Older siblings will go to the youngest siblings gate to exit there as a family, eg. If a family has a year 6, a year 4 and a year 1 student, the year 4 and 6 students will go to the Year 1 exit. At pick up time, parents please remember to: *Socially distance yourselves (1.5m apart) *Be safe - do not wait in the middle of the road *Be patient - our staff will do their very best to make sure pick up can be done quickly Morning drop off - please remain in your car, drop your children near one of the gates, ensuring they get out of the left hand side of the car and then drive off again. I would try to get to school closer to 8.30am rather than be late.

Unwanted visitors It seems as though from time to time, we have a number of people who come into the school. If it happens before or after school, of course, make sure you inform me or at the very least, inform the office of something you have witnessed or are not happy about. Sometimes, we have people come in on the weekends or over the holidays too. Most of these people do come in a use the playgrounds in the right way, but others are only interested in causing damage or vandalising our property. If you notice any such behaviour going on within our school, could you consider ringing the school security unit’s to report suspicious activity on their 24-hour hotline number, 1300 880 021. Your assistance here is greatly appreciated to keep our school looking beautiful and functional for our wonderful students.

Page 8: Public School Lidcombe 2141

New Playground The new playground has finally been completed with 2M, K/6E, K/6S and 3/6R the first classes to use it – and they all had so much fun. However, given the current COVID-19 restrictions, we have to shut it down for now as we would be required to thoroughly clean all of the equipment before another class can use it. I’m sorry, I don’t want to mandate this, but we need to consider the safety of everyone in our school community, elderly extended family members included.

Dogs at school – not a good idea ! Lately, we have all noticed some parents showing up of an afternoon with dogs. Ordinarily, I am quite easy with this, even though the advert below this article always appears in a newsletter. We do, however, have a few students with anxiety when near dogs of any sort and particularly if these dogs seem aggressive. Considering the feelings of these students, I think it would be a better idea to leave these dogs at home and walk them later – not to school. I appreciate your support in this matter.

Principal

Did you know???

For the safety of all students, toddlers, babies and adults, please do not bring dogs into the school grounds, even on leashes. Some children have a genuine fear and it can be quite distressing for them as well as for parents, particularly those with very young children. Thank you for your support in this matter.

Under the Companion Animals Act

1998 No 87 (14.1.e), dogs are

prohibited in school grounds,

(whether or not they are leashed

or otherwise controlled).
