PUBLIC NOTICE – OCTOBER 14, 2021 REGARDING JOHNSON COUNTY DISTRICT ASSOCIATE JUDGE VACANCY The Johnson County Associate District Court Judge Appointing Commission will meet on Monday, November 22, 2021, beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Johnson County Courthouse for the purpose of nominating and certifying three individuals to Chief Judge Lars Anderson of the Sixth Judicial District to fill the vacancy created by the new district associate judge position in Johnson County authorized by the Iowa Judicial Branch. The newly appointed district associate judge will initially be assigned to the Johnson County juvenile court docket. Within fifteen days after the chief judge receives the list of three individuals nominated by the Commission, the district judges of the Sixth Judicial District must appoint one of the three nominees as the newest Johnson County district associate judge. To qualify for nomination by the Johnson County Associate District Court Judge Appointing Commission, a qualified applicant must file a certified application with the chairperson of the Associate District Court Appointing Commission by providing the original to the Johnson County Clerk of Court by 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 15, 2021, using the form approved by the Iowa Supreme Court. The Clerk of Court shall then email a copy of the filed application to each of the six commissioners. Please take note of the following information: 1. An applicant must be admitted to practice law in Iowa as a condition of being nominated for the office of district associate judge. 2. The district associate judge must be a resident of the Sixth Judicial District at the time of appointment and must continue to be a resident of the Sixth Judicial District during the entire term of office. The Sixth Judicial District is made up of the following counties in Iowa: Benton, Iowa, Linn, Johnson, Jones, and Tama. 3. The district associate judge shall serve an initial term and thereafter, in order to continue in their office, must stand for retention within the Sixth Judicial District at the judicial election under Iowa Code Sections 46.16 through 46.24. 4. The initial term of office for a district associate judge is for one year after appointment and until January 1 following the next judicial election after the expiration of such year. 5. An applicant must be able, measured by the person’s age at the time of appointment, to complete the initial term of office prior to reaching age seventy-two, which is the mandatory retirement age for district associate judges. 6. The present annual salary for a district associate judge is $137,740. 7. The district associate judge must serve within the Sixth Judicial District as directed by the chief judge and is subject to reassignment under Iowa Code Section 602.6108. Service will include rotations on nights and weekends. 8. District associate judges shall qualify for office as provided in Iowa Code Chapter 63. 9.
