To promote public health practice by providing student opportunities to assist local and State public health in times of need.

To provide extra hands to assist state and local health departments in Michigan with outbreak investigations, disaster relief, public health preparedness drills and exercises, health education, and other public health activities.

Requirements

SPH student in good academic standing Completion of the Student Interest Form Attendance at the On-site Training

(September 20, 2008, 9am-2pm) Completion of required on-line Trainings Completion of all trainings are required to be

eligible for any deployments

RequiredOn-line Trainings

IS-100 Introduction to Incident Command System (ICS) This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident

Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

IS-200 ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action IncidentsICS-200 provides training on and resources for personnel who are likely to assume a supervisory

position within the ICS.

IS-700 National Incident Management System (NIMS), An Introduction

NIMS provides a consistent nationwide template to enable all government, private-sector, and

nongovernmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents. The course explains the

purpose, principles, key components and benefits of NIMS.

need assistance for a specific short-term project.

request for volunteers

If necessary, additional training will be provided

Spring Break Field Experience - China

Dates: February 20-28, 2009

Participant fee: $650, includes airfare, lodging, in-country travel and meals

Your additional financial responsibilities: - vaccinations- passport fees- visa fees- transportation to and from Detroit Metro airport- international travel health insurance- admission fees to tourist attractions

Field experience description: The Tianjin Centers for Disease Control will host up to 12 students. This field experience is designed for students to gain an in-depth exposure to a public health system in a developing country. We will have two groups: measles and maternal child health.

Field experience description: Working with Professor Mark Padilla and Armando Matiz Reyes, this group will experience public health challenges and triumphs in a Caribbean nation.

Field experience description: Working with our partners at Delta State University and the Institute for Community-Based Research, students will collect and enter data from interviewing community members and geocoding neighborhoods related to community development 4 years after hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

- We will be looking for the following:- Departmental representation- Balance of international and non international experience- Participation in other PHAST and/or Practice activities - Applications that succinctly and adequately address the

questions
