Lexington Royalty

Lexington Royalty is an illuminated series of sculptures that emphasize the grand interests of the city through the use of light, color and imagery. The sculpture sets colorful blue jewels in the sky, crowning the bridge in a ring of sapphires. My aim is to showcase the resplendent narrative of Lexington through the artwork, reminding residents and visitors of the notable pursuits of this great city.

The sculpture will serve as a distinguished icon for the new Oliver Lewis Way bridge and surrounding area. Royalty is composed

BLESSING HANCOCK | sculptureof six elevated turrets, each one framing a large jewel like form. As a monument to the city, each jewel will incorporate a unique theme of local significance. These themes will be chosen and developed through a creative community engagement process. In this way the sculpture will become a canvas for the expression of Lexington’s unique community values. I have successfully incorporated community engagement in this way for many of my sculptures.

The title Lexington Royalty refers to local interests that hold a special honor or acknowledgment within the community. The goals for the bridge artwork and the history of the community in which the art is proposed, are incredibly compelling. Royalty reflects the spirit and grace of Lexington and will serve as an iconic gateway for the community.

Through the use of light, color, form and shadow, this artwork will contain a compelling level of detail and will have a strong daytime and nighttime presence. During the day sunlight will stream through the colorful panels illuminating the artwork. Lighting will bring additional interest to the sculpture in the evening.

The surface design offers another layer of interest that engages the visitor up close. This will be achieved through the inclusion of text or imagery collected from the local community and based on the theme of Lexington Royalty.

The addition of public art Oliver Lewis Way bridge is an important identity marker for Lexington and Royalty helps to define this character. The illuminated enclosures of Royalty form a visual screen for the display of light and color patterns.

Royalty celebrates the vitality of Lexington by offering an eye catching sculpture that invites discovery and engagement. Visitors will enjoy walking and driving past the artwork, and exploring the intricate designs on its surfaces.

Community Engagement:Engaging the local community in the creative process is an important aspect of my artwork. I would like the surface pattern of the sculpture to be informed through a public engagement process. I have considerable experience leading community groups in this way and I would be happy to incorporate this opportunity for Lexington Royalty. Colored graphics shown are placeholders for a more involved community engagement process.

My approach for this project is to immerse myself in the rich dialogue of the area. Community engagement is essential to understanding the desires of individuals who will live with the artwork. I will also communicate with leaders of local groups and work with the project team in establishing a cohesive vision. The goal is to use light, color and volumetric form to engage and invite discovery, while judiciously revealing the character of the area; and to ultimately create a bold, iconic artwork which strengthens community and celebrates the City of Lexington.
