"You need a special kind of pilot to do this. It takes special training," said Pierre. It takes about six seconds to drop the load. It's obvious. There's a lot of green that wasn't there before." One reason he's eager to promote Agric Air's involve- ment in the Inco regreening program is to help change public misconceptions that often undermine his chosen line of work. "People tend to see us as barnstormers and crop-dusters who deal with chemicals and pesticides." In fact, he said, forestry and agricultural biological work is their main expertise, and they've flown as far as Mexico and Africa to do it. The Inco experience has also proved a valuable learn- ing experience for Agric Air. "It's the first time we've con- centrated so much work into such a short period. This year we had three weeks to do 500 acres. We apply about 10,000 pounds of lime per acre and another 770 pounds of seed and fertilizer. Savings by solving the mysteries of the furnaces

T he anode furnaces usedto be the Copper Refin-ery's own little mystery.

Experienced operators werethe refinery's "mystics" whointerpreted the cries, waftedthe subtle aroma and felt theheartbeat of the demons inthe machine.

A1though risking the Cop-per Cliff Refining's depend-ency on its most valuable eyes,ears, nose and throat, Jim feltthe refinery needed a demys-tified yardstick to calculatehow things were going insidethe furnaces.

"In 1992 it was costing usabout $1.6 million to run thefour burners and the price ofgas was expected to go up. Wewere facing a 25 per cent in-crease in the cost of naturalgas," said Jim.

With a major overhaul onthe horizon and parts for theexisting equipment expensive,hard or nearly impossible toget, Jim came up with the ideaof upgrading the natural gasburners.

"There were no obviousoperating problems with theequipment at the time," said

Jim, 'butwejust figured thingscould be improved."

The two burners in each oftwo furnaces were last up-graded in 1962. "It was state-of-the-art equipment backthen, but it's close to anti-quated by today's standards,"said Jim.

The evolution of Jim's origi-nal idea was a textbook modelof cooperation and teamwork.

Enter instrumentationman Alf Doherty. Workingwith ailey Systems, themanufacturer of the compu-ter control systems that runsother segments of (he refin-ery's analysis system, AIfhelped expand the controlsystem by about 35 per cent tocover the burner operations.

It was refinery electrical en-gineer Dave Ballantyne's jobto tie the two systems togetherand to design the crucial wir-ing systems.

"The hardest part wasmaking newequipment fit intoan old container."said project man-ager GatesPerrault. "We hadthe full coopera-tion from justabout everybodyto get this thingdone, and that in-cluded the furnace

operators, instrumentationpeople, electricians and justabout all the trades people wehave. It was the 100 per centinput from everybody that al-lowed us to pull it off."

Much of the work was in-novative, untried and ex-tremely critical. Not only didthe high-tech control systemneed to be installed and thewiring hooked up, but an endwall had to be taken out of thefurnaces and replaced alongwith all the old and new pip-ing, cables, switches andvalves.

And It had to be done inthe four-week refinery shut-down.

"There was some questionabout whether we could doit," said Gates. "We had sixmonths of weekly planning toget every detail in place."

and carried out by mainte-nance mechanic Austin Laneand crew, the job was donewith a few days to spare.

When the switch wasthrown and everythingworked as planned, there werea few sighs of relief.

"It was kind of a surprise toeverybody when it startedwithout a hitch, consideringall the things that could havegone wrong," said Gates.

It's too early to provideexact figures, but savings areexpected to be substantial."We figure between 12 and 30per cent improvement in gasefficiency," said Jim.

For anode furnace instru-ment man Don Strain, theadvantages are already evi-dent. "It makes my job easier.Diagnosis is much easier thanbefore. You can tell what'swrong and where the prob-

lem is quicker and with moredetail.

Burner analysis will nolonger require an educatedear. In fact, the project hasmade the burners almost in-audible. "Used to be you hadto wear ear protection aroundthe furnace," said Don. "Youhad to scream at people if youwanted to be heard."

No more. "There's been avast improvement in the deci-bel level. It's so quiet that it'shard to tell when the burnersgo down," said AIf.

In fact, the unexpectedimprovement in the noise levelhas brought about the needfor a solution to a totally un-expected minor problem.

"Since we can't hear theburners anymore, we're in theprocess of installing a warn-s.ing light to let us know whenthe furnace is out," said Alf.

Inco Power Departmentgeotechnical engineer DavidVitone proudly lifts a certifi-cate of recognition, signed byMNR minister Howard Ham p -ton, for lnco's "valued part-nership in fisheries manage-ment on the upper Spanishwatershed."

Inco's main objective maybe wresting tons of ore fromdeep beneath the Sudburybasin and converting the hardrock into saleable metal, butthere's no better example ofthe company's seriouscommittment to the environ-ment than the decade-longattempt to find a compromisewith the sometimes conflict-ing interests of all of the Span-ish River watershed's inhabit-ants.

"We work together for thecommon good. We could onlyhave accomplished what wedid with everybody workingtogether. I think we (Inco)did our share," said Dave.The award was, at least inpart, in recognition of com-promises made to reach awater management plan forthe 23,000 acres of land and

6,700 acres of water thatmake up the 80 miles of lakesand rivers of the Spanish Riverwatershed.

Inco and E.B. Eddy ForestProducts, in co-operation withOntario's Ministry of NaturalResources, manage the waterthat runs through the system.Inco, the most involved of thetwo private partners in theprogram, is interested in gen-erating hydro-electric powerat its four generating facilitieson the Spanish River-at HighFails #1 and #2, and Nairnand Big Eddy. Inco derivesbetween 17 and 20 per cent ofits annual power needs fromthe system, using it as a kindof "peak control" to reduceconsumption when costs fromOntario Hydro are highest. Bynature, Inco's consumption isin great peaks and valleys,and Inco uses its Spanish hy-dro to lessen the financialimpact of an intricate OntarioHydro billing system that es-calates hydro costs at peakperiods.

Water regulation techni-cian Garry Stevens and assist-ant Hal Kohls help Inco con-trol a resource almost as vitalto its survival as nickel. At atime when energy costs aregoing up along with labor,environmental and most otheroperating expenditures, thetwo are "mining" hydro-elec-inc power

due to better management ofthe Spanish system.

"Water is our version ofhigh grade ore," said Dave."Our compromise involvedconsidering such things as fishspawning before drawingwater from the system."

The biggest challenge hasbeen getting the word out."Education, getting everybodyto view the watershed as awhole rather than their ownlittle corner. That's made thedifference," said Dave. "Oncethat was done, cooperationand teamwork kicked in."

Garry and Hal act as Incospokesmen in the area. Theyknow that most people rely onthe watershed for a good va-cation at the very least andtheir very livelihood at most.With the various interests ofthe local residents, the envi-ronment, government andInco's power needs at stake,operating the system can be ajuggling act.

In theory, the solution tomaintaining water levels is assimple as turning on the tap,the "plumbing" consisting ofa series of six lakes intercon-nected by rivers. Water flowbetween lakes is controlled bya series of retention and spill-way dams that act as faucets.Water's too low? Openthe tap.Too high? Turn it off.

But the problem is thatthere's only a limited amountof water. Garry and Hal pointout that problems startedwhen residents used to see only

the water in front of their cot-tage or under their particularcanoe.

Both are convinced that

Inco's relationship with peo-ple on the system has greatlyimproved over the past fewyears, mainly through a con-tinuing dialogue and a will-ingness to be open and frank.Inco uses the biggest portionof Spanish hydro in the wintermonths when hydro costs arehighest. In the summer, mostof the adjustment of levels isdone to help ensure there'senough water in the system tomaintain an environmentalbalance, to allow fish-egghatching and to bring waterlevels to near as normal con-ditions in exceptionally dry orwet seasons.

"It works out to a compro-mise with our power needs,nature, and our neighbors onthe system. We give up be-tween 10 per cent to 15 percent of storage water in thesummer months to help main-tain an environmental balance," said Dave. "That prob-ably works out to between $1million to $2 million in losthydro production, but it's aprice the company is willingto pay to be a good neighboron the Spanish. It's also thekind of thing that provesthere's real teeth in Inco's En-vironmental, Health andSafety Policy."

T eamwork has been somuch a part of the suc-cess story at Clarabelle

Fred Boyer and RonGarbutt have teamed up toconnect our 40 personal com-puters to a "Local Area Net-work" (also called "LAN").This allows these micro com-puters to talk to many othercomputers throughout theOntario Division.

When disaster strikes, teamwork is more important thatever. The problem with thecracked trunnion on the SAGmill was successfully resolvedby a team. When #4 millneeded to be converted to arod mill, the shift crews andbullgang teamed up to deballthe mill in record time. Spe-cial thanks to Mike Gaudettefrom North Mine, who blastedthe fine ore bin numeroustimes to provide ore for #4 rodmill.

Safety concerns are almostalways resolved by teams.Doug Morrison teamed upwith Rick Gagnon, JohnKutchaw, Terry Mcl(enzieand John Kanerva to find asafer and faster way to servicecrane rails at the crushingplant. On their recommenda-tion, a static line was engi-neered and installed.

The recent Environmental.Health and Safety Audit by ateam of six auditors took two

Outside comparisons for Inco's hydro operation

I nco's Power Departmenthas been in the forefrontof Ontario Division's cost-

cutting efforts, with energyconservation projects slicingmillions off the company's an-nual electricity bill.

Now the department willcompare notes with others tosee if there's a better, morecost-effective way to run thehydro generating programon the Spanish River Water-shed.

In late September, thePower Department playedhost to the second meeting ofa group of hydro producersthat is sharing information tolearn from each other abouthydro generation.

"It's a group that involvespeople like us, mainly indus-

tries that produce hydro as asideline from the main busi-ness," said Power Departmentengineer Mike Chorkawy. "Incomparing notes with otherslike us, we hope to share infor-mation, to learn how we com-pare with others and how wecan do better.

Inco and E. B. Eddy ForestProducts, in co-operation withOntario's Ministry of NaturalResources, manage the waterthat runs through the system.Inco, the most involved of thetwo private partners in theprogram, is interested in gen-erating hydro-electric powerat its four generating facilitieson the Spanish River - at HighFalls #1 and #2, and Nairnand Big Eddy.

and 20 per cent of its annualpower needs from the system,using it as a kind of "peakcontrol" to reduce consump-tion when costs from OntarioHydro, the huge government-owned utility, are highest. Bynature, Inco's consumption isin great peaks and valleys,and Inco uses its Spanish hy-dro to lessen the financialimpact of an intricate OntarioHydro billing system that es-calates hydro costs at peakperiods.

Along with Inco, the per-formance benchmarkingproject includes Great LakesPower Ltd., LaCie D'EnergieMcLaren Quebec, Abitibi-PriceGrand Falls, Chi Develop-ments and Abitibi-PriceSaguenay Hydro Division.

Abitibi-Price SaguenayHydro Division initiated theperformance benchmarkingproject in order to create amodel for measuring the com-pany's ability to fulfil its mis-sion; to provide the customerswith a good, reliable and lowcost product while maintain-ing the integrity of the assetswith no unacceptable operat-ing risk.

The objective of the firstmeeting, attended by Mikeand Power and Utilities su-perintendent Peter Pula, wasto present the Saguenayproject to some comparablehydro utilities in order toevaluate the interest level ofdelegates in this project, iden-tify organizations that aresuitable for it, sign up poten-

tial collaborators and definethe project organizationalstructure and strategy.

Each participant describedhis organization's type olin-stallation and main activi-ties and outlined his needsfor henchmarking and ex-pectations from the project,including such things ashealth and safety, environ-ment, cost and other specificissues such as training andreliability.

Utilization of equipment,:defining operational objec,tive, water management opti-mization, measuring the hy.dro contribution to reducecustomer product costs andmaintaining condition of as-sents will also be part of thebenchmarkinq process.

Ministry and Creighton cooperate, not confront

Acooperative, unitedapproach to occupa-tional health and safety

by employees, managementand government initiated atCreighton Mine is getting sup-port from all quarters.

"It's the way to go," saidCreighton Mine OccupationalHealth, Safety and Environ-ment co-chair Randi Condie."The way we want to do it is toprevent accidents rather thanlook for somebody to punishwhen an accident happens."

The mine ventilation manand his co-chair, mine super-intendent Fred Stanford, werepart of a team set up to exam-ine a better way to deal collec-tively with the critical issue ofoccupational health andsafety at the mine.

What they came up with isa program that adapts thepreventive, cooperativeapproach that's provedsuccessful in programs suchas community-based crimeprevention.

Ministry of Labour electri-cal mechanical inspector FredWhite was instrumental in thechange in direction. He saidhe was not satisfied being "theguy with the big stick" whocame in to impose punish-ments after an accident hap-pened or a problem was un-covered, so he asked the mine'sOSHE committee to help himchange the relationship inmuch the same way that po-lice forces have turned to edu-cation and community in-volvement to prevent crimesfrom happening in the firstplace.

"I told them I wanted tochange the way I worked withthem as an inspector," he said."I told them I will put the bigstick to sleep. They know I willprosecute if I have to, but aslong as we're improving andthey don't give me any needto, I won't do it. And nobodyhas tried to take advantage ofthat."

The change in directionlead from frustration at theworkplace accidents in On-tario that stubbornly remainhigh despite all-out efforts toreduce the numbers since theOccupational Health andSafetyAct was passed in 1978.

White points out that itwasn't Creighton's accidentrate that triggered the newapproach. Instead, it was aneffort to be proactive, beingvisible on-site when problemsweren't happening ratherthan running around after thefact.

Creighton miners, fromsenior management to peo-ple in the drifts, were behindthe change in direction. Safetyaudits were conducted in ar-eas identified by the Jointhealth and safety committeeas being of concern, includingworking conditions, heat anddust levels and sources of igni-tion of mobile equipment.

"I think there's more trustthese days that the companyis serious about safety. Andthe people who are doing thework are involved in the proc-ess. They're involved in find-ing solutions. I think that allmakes a difference," saidRandy. "This way, the minis-try is more of a service to Incothan an adversary."

He said a major reason forthe backing of employees inthe effort is because they wereinvolved in the decision mak-ing. "These decisions aren'tmade anymore on an elevatedmanagement level," he said."Employees are approachedfor their input and ideas morethan before, and that's madea difference."

Undoubtedly, said Randi,safety cannot be commanded."It takes the conscientious ef-forts of everybody at the mine.But there's not question thattoday's miner is better edu-cated, more skilful and bettertrained than ever before. Thatusually goes hand in handwith a much more responsi-ble attitude about safety aswell."

Worker safety representa-tive Dollard Dolbeck agreed.A member of the OSHE com-mittee, Dollard's input wascrucial. "There's no questionsthat our employees are muchmore motivated if they areincluded and consulted in theprocess" he said.

The cooperative effortswere very successful, accord-ing to White, who said prob-lems were identified and rec-ommendations made to im-prove things, some of the sub-sequent solutions leading to"significant" improvements.

Most of the problem solv-ing was done by the minersthemselves. White said hedidn't lead the discussions, butoffered advice and assistanceinstead.

After an examination ofstatistics revealed that a ma-jority of injuries were backinjuries stemming from awk-ward positions people work inand the nature of the work, an

ergonomics expert went un-derground to examine theworking conditions. Recom-mendations about improvingpositioning and equipmentmodifications were adopted aspart of a long-term strategy toreduce the number of backinjuries. An in-house videoabout preventing back inju-ries was also produced.

White says the preventa-tive approach is working. "It'sby no means perfect, but theimprovement in attitude isfantastic."

Fred Stanford says work-ing with the ministry to re-solve problems can be refresh-ing. "On the whole, it just helps

when you've got a problembrewing to be able to phonethe ministry and get construc-tive help without worryingabout them coming out withthe big stick."

"In the past, one of theproblems was we had our pri-orities and things we were try-ing to do to improve and theministry had theirs. The use ofthe big stick to make us focuson their priorities was not aneffective solution. Sitting downand thinking the issuesthrough is much better.

"The education and con-sultation approach makespeople more receptive toideas."

Who turned off Dave Schroeder's water? Nobody. Thisis an air shower that blows any remaining dust off thespecially-designed anti-lint and anti-static coveralls.

A lot is expected fromtoday's undergroundenvironment. It's as

safe as technologically possi-ble, as comfortable as ventila-tion allows and undergroundlunchrooms even attempt toprovide that homey touch.

But dust-free?"Well, not exactly dust-free,

but close," said contaminationcontrol specialist DaveSchroeder who has been hiredby the Sudbury Neutrino Ob-servatory to make theCreighton Mine underground

facility as dust-free as possible.With the drilling, blasting

and constant activity that goeson in most mining environ-ments, controlling dust seemslike almost an impossibility,and Dave admits the task waschallenging.

"The normal air we allbreathe in the surface envi-ronment averages out at about150,000 particles per cubicfoot," said Dave. "We want tobring that down to 10,000 hereat this underground facility."

Despite massive ventila-

tion efforts, the very nature ofthe underground mining en-vironment creates more dustthan the surface environment.

Dave has worked on "cleanrooms" in the electronics in-dustry, including the Cruisemissle and fighter cockpit dis-play research projects.

New to the undergroundenvironment, Dave talked toInco ventilation people whohave many years of experi-ence trying to make the un-derground environment thebest it can possibly be.

"1 talked to Inco's suppliers,too," said Dave. "1 even talkedto the drymen to see what kindof soap they used in their clean-up work and what worked best.Inco people were invaluable indirecting me to people whocould help in my work. I gotlots of telephone numbers ofexperts who could help."

Dave said the work initiallybegan with brooms and shov-els. "The trick is to get it asclean as possible and keep itthat way, rather than clean-ing it constantly. We used high

pressure power washers andeventually we wiped every-thing down by hand.

"I'd estimate that we'vescrubbed this entire fablitydown at least three times."

But keeping the facility::.clean isn't a matter of equip..ment and technology, it's oneof education. "One carelessperson can bring an unbeliev-able amount of contamina-tion into the facility," sold::..Dave. "People who use the:-observatory will have to betrained in keeDino it deem" -

The procedure begins witha boot bath, then personnelstrip down and take a showerand dress in socks, underwear,t-shirt and specially-designedanti-lint and anti-static cover-alls that remain at the facilityand are washed every two daysat SNO laundry facilities.

whole lot different when thedecision to put your nose tothe grindstone is up to you.

"I've been working since Iwas 15 years old," said theretired Inco risk managementsupervisor, "and I can't seeme quitting altogether rightnow. I'm too young. I want tokeep myself active, to shootfor goals. I can't do nothing.

"On the other hand," hemused with a leisurely philo-sophic look on his face, "I don'twant to work from nine to fiveagain. I'm not sure I want to(10 the full time thing again.I'm shooting for perhaps threeto six months of work a year.

"I'll probably deal about15 or 20 hours a week," saidDick. "I don't want this to be-come a full-time job. Basically,this'll back up my pensionincome and give me a chanceto get out and meet people."

Dick holds a governmentlicense as a dealer. He's alsotaken a dealers' course andtable test for a local company.

He's been hired already.With more than 30

Creighton miners not return-ing to work after the summershutdown, the mine held aspecial thank you session notonly for the miners, but fortheir wives as well. "We know

less, visibly moved by a warmbear hug and backslappinggoodbye.

The wives were presentedwith flowers and the groupwas taken to lunch at theTradewinds where they werepresented with a gift certifi-cate from the Creighton MinesAssociation and a small sculp-tured figure of a miner withshovel on a piece of ore.

Weatherman 'sblues

40 Years AgoHe was right 88 per cent of the time, got 80 telephone calls a day and once,

when the temperature sank to 47 degrees below zero, logged 700 telephone callsbefore he stopped counting.

Not the Prime Minister of Canada, or even a stockbroker with a genius l.Q. anda magic crystal boll, but that most intrepid of all unimpeachable stalwarts ofscientific wisdom - the weatherman.

Burdened with the blight of a poor press agent. even he got his due in theTriangle.., and the coverage was quite enlightening.

Not done with smoke or mirrors or guess work of any kind, apparently,weather forecasting was a pretty complicated affair, with emphasis given totemperature, wind direction and velocity, dewpoint, altimeter readings and thetype of clouds over Sudbury at a given time.

All this information was teletyped to the district forecaster at Malton Airportevery hour - and more frequently if conditions were unusual - and every six hoursthe district forecaster would send back a general weather forecast.

As scientific as it all was the weather had a fickle temperament though, saidthe Triangle, so that even "with sound scientific information, patience, accuracyand faithful attention to duty" the weatherman sometimes made a mistake.

Nevertheless, records proved, It was only once out of eight times.. . regardlessof what your old, cantankerous uncle Silas says.

An Interesting performer who excited the crowd was Carl Lewis, who would goon to bigger and better things in two Olympic Games, He dominated the 100 and200 metre races and contributed substantially to the United States winning the 400metre relay.

One of Canada's outstanding performers was Angela Bailey "who rocketedacross the finish line" in the women's 100 and 200 metre events for double gold.

Choosing thecategory only narrows the field alittle. You can narrow the rangeof choices by considering how thefund has performed in the post,who the fund managers are orhow the costs of running the fundare allocated to the investors.

Performance

You can learn how the fundhas performed over the pastmonth, 3 months, orthelastone,two three or 10 years. The reportwill tell you by what percentagethe unit prices have increased ordecreased over each period. Yes, Idid say decrease. Funds go upand down just like the shares inwhich they are invested. Whatexactly increases or decreases invalue? When you purchase Mu-tual Funds, you buy units in thefund. The Mutual Fund managerthen takes your money and in-vests it in shares for the fund.When you invest, the companycalculates the value of all the

In any industry, there are peo-ple who do their jobs extraordl-norily well. The Mutual Fund in-dustry is no exception. Some in-vestors believe it is beneficial toknow who Is managing a fundand how it has done under thatmanager. A change in fund man-ager may indicate a change inthe investment philosophy, so thisis another factor to conslderwhénmaking your decision.

Paying for your purchase

The companies selling MutualFunds are doing just that, theyare selling them. This meansthatthey expect a fee for their serv-ices. This fee can be calculatedand collected in a number of ways.

Some funds have what iscalled a front-end load. This

means that some of your originalinvestment dollars are not usedto buy units in the fund. Insteadthey are paid to the fund formanaging your money. Thecharge is usually calculated as apercentage of the amount youinvest.

Some funds have what iscalled a back-end load. Thismeans that when you sell yourunits in i fund, the managementtakes a percentage of the value ofyour units as its fee for havingmanaged your money for theperiod.

A third way mutual fund com-panies make their money is bycharging an armual adrninistra-lion fee. This fee is a small per-centage of the income that thefund earns from interest, divi-dends or capital gains over thecourse of a year. The companytakes its share before any pay-ments are made to unit holders.

Each method of charging hasits advantages and disadvantagesfor you the investor, and the wayyoupay for management of yourmoney should not be the decid-ing Issue unless you are choosingbetween two funds which areequally suitable in every otherrespect.
