B. LaRiviere, who was killed in a bombing in Beirut in 1983; and Ma-rine Gunnery Sgt. John S. Fredette, who was shot and killed while on duty in the Philippines in 1990.
Each of the names of the ser-vicemen is etched onto the six dog tags hanging from a rifle. Space will be left open on the monument for any future casualties to be com-memorated.
“It is really relevant to so many of our residents that will be able to relate to that space,” said Director of Veterans Services Stephanie Shaw, who is a National Guard veteran.
Additionally, Shaw said the
committees wanted to convey a change in the military: more wom-en are serving to support this gener-ation of veterans.
“[There was] a unanimous de-cision by the committee to highlight the role that women have played in combat roles and in supportive roles,” Shaw said. “During this con-flict women are allowed into com-bat roles; they are working with the infantry. There’s a lot more women than generations past.”
The memorial is a statue of a female soldier kneeling in front of a makeshift marker known as a “bat-tlefield cross” – a fallen soldier’s
rifle topped with the soldier’s hel-met and anchored by their boots. One side is dedicated to those killed prior to 9/11, the other reserved for those killed in military conflicts fol-lowing the 2001 terror attacks.
The memorial was designed by the Veterans Memorial Patriotic Committee and the War on Terror Memorial sub-committee, which includes Delfo Barabani, Jr., Kim-berly A. Babin, Michael Brunetti, Don and Shirley Isabelle, Brian Be-langer, Robert Lukasik and Christo-pher Dupont, whose brother Kevin is one of the six servicemen memo-rialized by the statue.

Our student outcomes are impressive and both students and employers are taking notice that we are a Uni-versity with a unique focus on student success. The undergraduate Open House is the perfect opportunity to tour our beautiful campus, meet with members of our faculty, ask questions to current students, and get a sense of the community spirit that makes Western New England University a truly special place.”
Guests will have the chance to tour the campus and residence halls, meet current students, get a general overview of the admissions and financial aid process, and have academic questions answered by members of the faculty.
