Space will be left open on the monument for any future casualties to be com- memorated. “It is really relevant to so many of our residents that will be able to relate to that space,” said Director of Veterans Services Stephanie Shaw, who is a National Guard veteran. Additionally, Shaw said the committees wanted to convey a change in the military: more wom- en are serving to support this gener- ation of veterans. “[There was] a unanimous de- cision by the committee to highlight the role that women have played in combat roles and in supportive roles,” Shaw said. “During this con- flict women are allowed into com- bat roles; they are working with the infantry. There’s a lot more women than generations past.” The memorial is a statue of a female soldier kneeling in front of a makeshift marker known as a “bat- tlefield cross” – a fallen soldier’s rifle topped with the soldier’s hel- met and anchored by their boots. One side is dedicated to those killed prior to 9/11, the other reserved for those killed in military conflicts fol- lowing the 2001 terror attacks. The memorial was designed by the Veterans Memorial Patriotic Committee and the War on Terror Memorial sub-committee, which includes Delfo Barabani, Jr., Kim- berly A.
