Patterns of the PresenceThe Spiritual Disciplines as an Antidote to Despair

OverviewEveryone has found adjusting to COVID-19 restrictions difficult in one way or another. Many of the faith practices that helped us grow in faith, such as gathering physically on a Sunday, are not available to us. We need to assist and encourage each other to find healthy and life giving practices that can be exercised at home whilst under physical distancing constraints.

This reliance on being taught and encouraged by others is described well by Donald Coggan who was the Archbishop of Canterbury, “I go through life as a transient on his way to eternity, made in the image of God but with that image debased, needing to be taught how to meditate, to worship, to think.”

This series covers a different aspect of faith that is highlighted by both a practice of letting go and a practice of filling up (engagement & disengagement in the language of Dallas Willard). This pairing of practices means they are related but different. All these practices can be done under physical distancing restrictions and focus us on the joy and opportunity of this time. There are plenty of other Christian disciplines (75 according to Adele Calhoun!), but we’ve chosen to focus on a few that might be pertinent in our current situation.

Weekly Questions & PromptsThese questions and prompts can be used each week as we work our way through the suggested disciplines.

• Check in with each other. What patterns of God’s presence have you noticed since you last met?

• What do you think these two disciplines look like? What are some creative ways to express them? How are they different under our physical distancing restrictions?

• What experience do you have with these practices? Share the good, bad, and the ugly if you’re willing!

• Read the suggested passages for the week. In a group setting maybe assign the readings to individuals and then get them to report back. What do we learn from the Bible about spiritual practices and the patterns of God’s presence? Are there other Bible passages you can think of that relate to these?

• What benefits might these disciplines open up for us?

• What dangers could there be with these practices?

• How do we keep striving in faith without becoming self-righteous and trusting in our own good works?

• What intentional practice(s) do you want to focus on in your relationship with God for the next week or so?

• Pray for each other in the presence of God.

ISO-FAITH // from despair to disciplineThis is an introduction week thinking about the blessing of discipline when we have reasons to despair. • Daniel 1:1-21

• John 5:19

• Matt 11:28-30

• John 10:10

• 1 Thess 5:24

• Eccl 3:1-8

STORY // silence + postingThis week we think about STORY and storytelling which includes the big story of God revealed in the Bible as well as the smaller stories we tell about our lives. The two practices to explore are SILENCE, which might seem like the opposite of storytelling, and POSTING, which is what happens online in a massive way every second of the day but also can be as classic as posting a physical letter.

» SILENCE - Letting go of our right to make noise, the beauty of a quiet soul

» POSTING - Filling the earth with praise & thanksgiving

» Bible passages to explore:

• Hab 2:20

• Ps 131

• Rev 8:1

• Acts 1:8

• Matt 28:19-20

• Heb 12:28-29

• Prov 10:19

» CONFESSION - Letting go of the shackles of sin

» RULE FOR LIFE - Filling your calendar with godly habits

» MEMORISATION - Filling your mind with God’s life by contemplating and studying
