WHAT IS PTPTN

• PTPTN Education Financing Scheme was established for the purpose of providing education financing to students pursuing studies in local institutions of higher education.

WHAT IS PTPTN

• PTPTN education financing facility is offered to students pursuing their studies at public (IPTA) and private (IPTS) institutions of higher education locally. This is in accordance with Section 2 of the PTPTN Act 1997 (Act 566) for institutions of higher education established under the:

• Universities and University Colleges Act 1971;• Universiti Teknologi MARA Act 1976;• Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996;• Polytechnics established and maintained by the

Minister under the Education Act 1996; and• Any other higher educational institutions

established or deemed to have been established under the Education Act 1996 and which is determined by the Minister to be a higher educational institutions.

POSITIVE IMPACT OF PTPTN

• This education financing will enable students to finance fully or partially the course fees and their cost of living for the duration of their study at the local institutions of higher education. Thus providing more opportunities for students to pursue study at the tertiary level.

• WPP amounting RM 1500 is provided to ease financial burden of the students in preparing themselves prior to registration at IPTA & IPTS.

• Student graduate with first class honour don’t have to pay back the loan because the loan will be transfer into a scholarship.

• PTPTN also give borrowers incentive and discounts to encourage them pay their loans.

NEGATIVE IMPACT OF PTPTN

• PTPTN loan holder have to pay back the amount borrowed including the 1% “ujrah”.

• The administrative cost will be calculated 6 months after completion of studies or termination of loan.

• You will be barred from leaving Malaysia until the total amount of the remaining balance is settled if you are not pay back the loan.

NEGATIVE IMPACT OF PTPTN

• You have to pay back the PTPTN loan six month after you graduate.

• You must pay back some amount every month in future for a certain period.

• Sometimes student used the money for something that is unrelated with the education.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

• More than 100,000 PTPTN loan holders have been blacklisted by Immigration Department.

• A total of 412,245 people out of the 1.24 million who had taken loan from PTPTN have yet to repay the money.

• 36% of male students had failed to repay their loans, out of 527,152 male borrowers, while 265,305 or 33% female student out of 814,221 female borrowers, had also failed to repay their loans.

ISSUES REGARDING PTPTN

• Abolish PTPTN and give free education to the student.

• List PTPTN loan holders under the Central Credit Reference Information System (“CCRIS”).
