Tragicomedy and Operetta

What is the story behind the curtain? Though being a successful clown, Jeff fails in gratifying Dora’s vanity.
In order to save a breaking family, he has made a decision: moves Dora to change her mind in his final
performance…
List of Characters
Jeff (J) – a clown, who has married Dora for ten years and gives his biggest effort to maintain a complete
and happy family.
Dora (D) – Jeff’s wife, who has married Jeff for ten years. She is a naïve woman who is easily influenced by
others. Under Mrs. Brown’s influence, she misunderstands that love needs to be expressed by
giving out materials. However, deep in her heart, she loves Jeff very much.
Zoe (Z) – Daughter of Jeff and Dora, who is always proud of Jeff.
Mrs. Brown (B) – Dora’s friend who has a wealthy husband and shows off her luxuries in front of Dora
frequently.
Scene 1
(lights on)
B: (walks to the centre, and face to the audiences) ( looks sad) I have a new diamond ring again… but, why
do I feel so lonely? (Bow her head)
D: (walks toward Mrs. Brown) Hello. Mrs. Brown.
B: (turns her sad face become happy face and smiles) Hello, Dora.
D: Oh, what a shiny diamond ring.
B: (smiles) Yes. My husband bought me this diamond ring yesterday.
D: (looks jealous) I see… you have a really good husband.
(lights off)
(lights on)
J: (opens the door) Oh, my sweetheart, have you been a good kid today?
Z: (Smile but says softly) Of course… (Look at Jeff)
J: (Curiously) Really? What have you done today?
Z: (Bow her head, Quick-witted, touches her stomach) Oh Daddy, I am hungry now!
J: (Be reminded) Umm… I am a little bit hungry too! Let’s see what Mum has prepared for dinner!
(Z&J take few steps towards living room and find Dora is reading fashion magazine)
J: (Sits next to her and says happily) Honey, I have done a really good show today! All the audiences, they
love me! It’s so nice to see the children smiling just because of my performance but not the other tiny
tricks... (Looked shy but happy and prou d)
(D Keeps silent and neglects what Jeff says and keep reading magazine)
J: (Worried) Honey, honey, are you okay? Do you feel sick? You look pale!
D: (Be irritated, without patience) Can you just stop? You always repeat, repeat and repeat the same sort
of things. Can’t you say something meaningful? Making people laugh is your duty. You’ve been a clown
for over ten years! It’s no longer a surprise, OK? If you can leave me a space, I’ll be thankful.
J: (Wants to explain and tries to walk nearer to Dora) I just....
Z: (Notices the strange atmosphere and runs to Dora) Mum! When will we have dinner? I am so hungry!
(Touches her own stomach)
D: (Immediately smiles and ignores Jeff) One moment, I’ll make it for you. (goes to kitchen for cooking)
J: (eyes keep looking Dora until she totally leaves the living room) (Wonders) Zoe, do you know what’s
wrong with Mum? She looks really strange. Have I done anything wrong?
Z: (Recalls memories) I don’t know. Nothing’s special happened...today. (Has a flash on and quickly turns
to Jeff) Oh! Daddy! Do you remember that Mum and you are going to celebrate something tomorrow?
(Hold Jeff’s hand and shakes it) You can grab this chance to cheer her up!
J: (Looks at the wedding ring, Speaks with confidence, looks happy and holds Zoe’s hands) Yes, Oh…
Certainly! It’s been 10 years already! I have planned something for the day; I bet she will be very happy
about that!
Z: (Curious) What is it?
J: (Laughs and whispers to Zoe) It is a secret! I’ll keep it until tomorrow.
Z: (Begs Jeff) Daddy! Tell me, please! I really want to know! Tell me please!
(J & Z having fun in the living room)
D: (comes out from the kitchen to the living room angrily) Jeff, can you shut your mouth? It is annoying! If
you have nothing to do, just help your daughter to do her revision!
J: (Shocked) Well…Okay. Come on, Zoe.
Z: (Shocked also) Is Mum unhappy today, Daddy?
J: (Tells Zoe softly) Shu! Let’s go, just do your work, Zoe.
Z: (Obediently) Okay. (takes out her homework from her schoolbag)
J: (Tries to hold Dora’s hand) Honey...Do you need any help?
D: Can you stop calling me “honey”? (Walks from kitchen) It‘s disgusting!
J: (Sad and shocked) Why? I have been calling you in this way for nearly ten years.
D: ( Immediately faces Jeff)So? It is the past! And would you please stop recalling
those silly memories? What past has past!
J: (in a sad mood) What are you talking about? Past? We are both standing here, a family of you and me
and our daughter…
D: (annoyingly ) Uh? So? (glares at Jeff)
J: (Afraid and makes his body small) OK… Dora… I don’t know what happen to you…Anyway, do you still
remember our 10th anniversary tomorrow?
D: (Still very angry) So what?
J: (Begs Dora) Please don’t be so angry. I promise, I will prepare the best present for you. (Walks forward
to Dora)I love you… Dora.
D: (Glares at Jeff, but with smiles) You’d better keep your promise.
(lights off)
Scene 2
(lights on)
Z: (Walks around Dora happily with light steps) Mum, what are you doing? You’ve been busy for a whole
day.
D: (With a sweet smile) Shu! Go and do your homework.
Z: (Curiously) Are you preparing something for Daddy?
D: (With a sweeter smile and pushes Zoe’s back) Go and do your homework.
J: (opens the door and holds a gift behind him) (Closes the door) I’m back.
Z: (Runs towards Jeff and holds his arm) Daddy, Daddy. I miss you. Would you play the trick you showed
me last time? I love that one!
J: (Touches Zoe’s head) Sure, my sweetheart, but I’m a bit tired now. Can you wait a moment?
Z: Okay. (Goes back to the corner and continues to do her homework)
J: Good girl.
Z: Sure. (Zoe turns to Jeff with a smile)
D: There is only Zoe in your eyes. Right?
J: (Turns to Dora and feels surprised) Oh! Dear, you look beautiful tonight.
D: (Walks towards Jeff with a smile) Oh, really? Do you remember what today is?
J: (Holds Dora’s hands) Of course, darling. Today is our 10th wedding anniversary, right? See what I’ve
made for you. (Gives the gift to Dora)Have a look! You’ll like it. Is it beautiful? Like the other nine photo
frames, I made it on my own. (Looking forward to Dora’s response)
(D Replies perfunctorily, gives back the photo frame to Jeff and walks away)
J: (Confused) You… don’t like the gift?
D: (Suddenly stops and turns back to Jeff showing her hands to him with a mysterious smile) Let me ask you
a question, what can you see on my fingers?
J: (Looking forward to a magic trick) (Wondering) Um…are you going to show me a magic trick? I see
nothing though. (Forced a laughs)
D: (Glares at Jeff, speaks in an increasing volume) Oh, yes, of course! Nothing!
There is nothing on my fingers! Have you ever seen Mrs. Brown’s diamond rings? Have you? (Looks up
with envy) They are so big and shiny. (Continues to glare at Jeff) You probably can never give me
something like that!
J: (Keeps silent for a while) But I’ve prepared some new tricks for you. I am sure you will like it. (Prepares
to perform a magic trick)
Z: (Suddenly puts her focus away from the homework and turns to Jeff) Daddy, I want to see! I want to see!
Let show it!
D: (Shouts angrily and with a bad temper) I don’t like it! I don’t need it!
(Z feels shocked and put her focus back to her homework again, but takes a peek on what is happening)
J: (Confused) But you used to love my tricks since we were dating. I still remember the smile on your face.
(Tries to hold Dora’s hands and speaks sweetly and softly) Come on, honey, do you still remember the day
when we first met? You said you want to see a new magic trick every year!
D: (Flings away Jeff’s hands)Don’t you understand? I need you to show me your love! Just a few days ago,
Mrs. Brown’s husband bought her a new diamond ring. I think that’s really what love is between couples!
And you! You just keep on giving me these stupid photo frames again and again! (Angrily points to the
photo frames)
J: (Soulfully) Dora, I want you to know that this family is the most important thing for me. These photos
prove the changes of our family. (Stares at the photo frames)
D: What kind of changes? You never change! We’ve been so poor since I have married you! Have you ever
been to Mrs. Brown’s home? Its size is three-time bigger than ours! How about our home? (Look around)
It’s being older and older. I don’t know why I would marry you! I think a rich guy can show me much
more love than you.
J: (Feel annoyed) But you know I am not rich at the very beginning! (Volume increases) You know that
indeed!
D: (Angrily and speaks in a large volume, showing Jeff ten fingers) TEN YEARS! What have you done? You
couldn’t even buy me a diamond ring! (Raps the photo frame from Jeff) I don’t want to see photo frames
anymore!
J: (looks at the photo frames, shocked and furious, turns away from Dora) Oh, I see! Go! Go now! Find
someone else to buy you a stupid ring with just a shining stone on it!
(D packs the book into the schoolbag)
(Z pretends to focus on doing her homework immediately but she is afraid and shaking)
D: (Pulls Zoe’s hand and picks up her schoolbag) Come on, let’s get out of here.
Z: (Be forced to stand up) Where’re we going, mum?
D: (Speaks angrily and with a large volume) we must leave this terrible place.
Z: (Wondering) For how long?
D: (Dora and Jeff have eye contact) Forever.
Z: (Flings away Dora’s hand) No! I don’t want to leave Daddy. I love Daddy. (Runs toward Jeff and hide
behind him)
D: (Replies immediately) No, Zoe, come to me.
Z: (Affirmatively) No!
D: Okay! Fine. No matter what, for sure we will leave. (Turns to Jeff) We will move out soon.
J: (Softly) Dora…I love you.
D: (With a large volume) Stop it! (Leaves the living room and goes back to bedroom with Zoe) We’re over.
(J looks at the photo frame and sings ‘Be a Clown’ sadly, cries silent and cover his eyes by hands in order to
stop his tears)
Z: (walks into the living room and discovers Jeff in the living room, rubbing her eyes with her hands) Daddy,
why are you still here? (Zoe walks forward to Jeff in curve and looks like sleepy, then discovers Jeff’s eyes
are red.)What’s the matter? Daddy?
J: (covering his face) …
Z: (Walks closer to Jeff and stands in front of him) Daddy, I am always proud of you, no matter who you are.
You are my great Daddy! I love you, daddy. I should go to bed now. Good night, daddy. (stands on the
centre of the stage) (pick up the photo frame)Mum said that, there are some places you should never stay.
(lights off)
Scene 3
Z: (shouts in the backstage to wake up Dora) Mum! Wake up! It’s nearly nine o’clock! Don’t you remember
we are having a carnival at school today?
D: Oh…… right. I’m going to get change now.
Z: (Quickly stands up and cheers) Hurry up Mum! I can’t wait anymore!
(lights on)
(D and Z appear in the carnival)
Z: (very excited) Wow! There are so many people! It must be interesting!
D: (smiles)Sure.
Z: (Faces Dora) But… will Daddy join us later?
D: (seems doesn’t care) I think he is too busy to come.
Z: (Disappointed) But…
D: (pick up Zoe’s hand) Zoe, don’t be sad. Come on.
(B entrances)
Z: Okay. Mum. (Looking around)Oh! (Shakes Dora’s hand)Mum, look! Mrs. Brown is over there! Let’s go to
her!
(D & Z go to Mrs. Brown and sit next to her and the audience)
D: (Pretends to be nice and waves her hands) Hello Mrs. Brown, we have not met for a while…How are
you?
B: (smiles)I’m doing well… Dora. Thanks.
D: (see the diamond ring on Mrs. Brown’s hand) Oh! Your new diamond ring? It is more shiny than your
older one!
B: Do you really think so? Thanks. Dora.
(D feels jealous and glares at Mrs. Brown’s diamond ring, but keeps a smile on her face)
Z: (Focuses on what is happening on the stage) Mum, the show starts now!
(D turns her focus from Mrs. Brown to the stage)
Narrator: Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome to our show! I’m here to introduce the most affable
performer in the town, Jeff the Clown!
(Clap hands)
(J comes on the stage with heavy steps and tries to keep a smile on his face)
Z: (Shocked and points to the stage) Look! Mum! It’s Daddy!
J: (Jeff gives a bow and takes a deep breath. He starts to perform) Thank you! Thank you very much. Thank
you! (Gives a deep bow and speaks) Thank you for watching my performance. Here, please let me say
something sincere… Just treat it as a story… I’ve been a clown for ten years. Some people may tease me
because being clown does not earn much. It is not professional or useful. But I really enjoy being a clown.
I love to share happiness with all of you. Yes… I really mean to it… Today, I am giving it up because of my
family. I want to show my love to them by improving their life. So… this is the last time I stand here, on a
stage, telling my soul to all of you… and to my love…(looks at Dora) I know…I am not a genius, I’m not a
rich man, but I have tried my best…Hope they will love my last show.
(Z stands up in the audience and claps alone)
J: Sweetheart?
Z: Daddy…(smiles) I am always proud of you! Really! No matter who you are! You give mum and me a
lovely family! Daddy, you give us more than you think!
J: (touching) Oh…thanks, sweetheart…. Thank you, thank you all of you!
B: (Claps her hands and stand up) What a nice show. (Smiles and turns to Dora) Actually, Dora, I’m so
impressed, I have never imagined that your husband is so… romantic. To be honest, I think that he loves
you very much.
Z: (Turns to Mrs. Brown and Nods her head quickly) Yes! I’m proud of my Daddy! He’s cool!
D: (Shocked and turns to Mrs. Brown) Love?
B: (Nods her head) Sure! He really gives LOVE and HAPPINESS! It feels like he has removed all the mess in
my mind. Now, I finally understand why I feel so lonely before.
D: (looks at the direction Jeff leaves, keeps silent, thinking of something) (Suddenly walks away and pick up
Zoe’s bag) (softly)Let’s go, Zoe. We should leave now.
Z: Mum…(holds Dora’s hand)
J: (walk a few steps to Dora) Dora…I have something to tell you.
D: (do not look at Jeff) …
(Z walk toward to Jeff and stills hold Dora’s hand, pick up Jeff’s hand slowly, and put Dora and Jeff’s hands
together)
(D let go of Jeff’s hand at first, J looks down, then D holds his hand again. They look at each other sweetly
hold the hands tightly)
(Zoe stands out, all the others freeze)
Z: Mum also said that, there are some places you should never leave.(smiles) (lights off)
Plot Analysis
Dramatic Action:
Jeff’s main goal is to maintain a happy family in the whole play. For instance, he tries to play juggleries for
Dora and Zoe, and gives gift to Dora. It is because his family is the most important thing to him and he loves
his family. He can even sacrifice his career in order to keep his family completed. From this, we can see the
importance of family to him. If he fails, he will lose his family and meaning of life. For example, Dora is
going to break up with him.
Setting:
The dramatic actions mainly happen at Jeff’s home and on the stage. The well-decorated and bright stage
implies his success and confidence when being a clown. Every time when Jeff is on the stage, he shows his
confidence. The old home in yellow symbolizes his failure in maintaining a happy family. For example, at
home he has no right to say anything in front of Dora. In one month’s time, Jeff must achieve the goal of
maintaining a happy family as Dora will move out with Zoe within a month. When the deadline expires, the
family will be broken because Zoe and Dora will have gone.
Conflict:
Jeff’s challenge in the play is that Dora’s misunderstanding of love equals materials. For example, Dora
always talks about how Mrs. Brown’s wealthy is. In order to continue his mission, he must move Dora to
change her mind. For example, he has given a hand-made photo frame as a gift to Dora, which implies the
growth of their family, though Dora seems not to accept it. Finally, he even intends to give up his career for
Dora.
Exposition:
Jeff is having a performance on the stage and receives a great appreciation from the audiences. For
example, the audiences clap hands and ask him for balls. This action shows that the stage is the main site
for him to be successful and confident. After the performance, he goes back home. He has little interaction
with family only. For example, whenever what he says, Dora gives an indifferent answer. The contrasting
emotions of Jeff introduce the metaphors of the settings. Besides, his attitude towards Dora and Zoe shows
his desire of maintaining a happy family. For instance, he gives his biggest effort to cheer Dora and Zoe up.
However, Dora’s indifferent attitude towards Jeff at home implies the challenge that Jeff has to face. The
contrasting situation of Jeff at home and on the stage shows that it is a tragicomedy which mixed bitterness
with sweetness.
Complication:
Jeff makes a photo frame and prepares some new juggleries for Dora in order to make her happy on their
10th wedding anniversary. However, Dora doesn’t appreciate his effort. For instance, she just complains
about why Jeff cannot buy her a diamond ring. Even worse, she wants to break up with Jeff by telling Zoe to
move out with her a month later. Jeff is shocked and feels so confused. He decides to move Dora to change
her mind on the performance of the carnival held by Zoe’s school. If he fails, it will be his final show before
giving up his career, just as what he said after performing his last show.
Resolution:
Eventually, Dora feels touched after watching Jeff’s performance in the carnival held by Zoe’s school. From
the appreciation given from Mrs Smith and the happiness of the children and parents brought by Jeff, she
starts to understand Jeff and appreciate him. For example, finally she apologizes to Jeff about her
misunderstanding to him in the past. She also realizes that materials are not the only mean to show love.
For instance, Mrs. Brown tells her that though her husband is rich, she feels unhappy. And Jeff keeps on to
be a clown under the encouragement of Dora. For example, Dora tells him ‘Don’t give up being a clown’. He
is going to bring everyone happiness after on.
Meaning:
The hidden message of the play is that happiness doesn’t mean wealth at all. Though wealth can satisfy
some people’s materialistic desires, such as Mrs. Brown, it cannot bring pure happiness just as what the
audiences of Jeff have. The hidden message specially target on those people who desire luxurious lives. We
encourage audience to pay attention to what their family members, friends or even lover do for them and
cherish their effort rather than just blaming the uncomforted they bring. Also, another hidden message is,
don’t feel inferior of what you are doing. Just like Jeff, although he is a clown who cannot make too much
money, bringing happiness to others is his success and finally will be appreciated by others. Besides,
sometimes we will forget what love is because of different kinds of external factors in reality, just like Dora.
However, through our appreciation to the ones we love, we can find love again easily. We have arranged a
happy ending for the play because we believe that through this ending, the audiences can think much
deeper into their own stories. Then, they may have a reflection on their own lives.

Finally, we’ve reached an end of the PTM course. To be honest, I’m not talented in drama or performing
on stage although I’ve got some kind of performing experience but that’s really limited. Through the course,
I learned many things and, well, the most important thing is that I gradually mean to enjoy something and
achieve something that I never expect when the semester started. Here, I have to thank all my dear
teammates. Without them, I might have given up at the very beginning. (That’s true because I am easily
affected by the atmosphere!)
Henry, among the team, I am most familiar with you because we’ve got many opportunities to cooperate
in GEIII course as well as PTM. What a luck! Anyway, thank you for making the group alive and (relatively?)
professional in some ways. Helen also appreciates your performance very much. I think you’ve been
satisfied about the play too, Ha-ha! You’re great, Henry. Well done!
Kan, well, as a part-time director and part-time DSM, you really contribute a lot to the group. It’s so lucky
to have you in the group because you seem to be the only person who can deal with the lighting properly.
Thanks for urging us to amend every tiny little thing in the play, especially the blocking. You give us more
than you think, Director!
Anna, I can’t say much to you because you really do a lot of things… You back up the whole team with
experience in making prompts and dealing with money. You attend every meeting and practice that you
give the team loads of advice. ‘The soul of the team’, if I have to say. I’m always proud of you, Anna! (^-^)
Yuki, actually I’m quite worried if you can perform well as an important character at first. Because you
used to laugh too much in the class and just couldn’t stop! However, when you started to act as Dora, you
show your talents that can be compared with Henry. (Well, just personal opinion.) You really act out what a
wife and a mother should be and you somehow influence the audience to feel what you feel. Your changes
also prove the changes of the whole group!
Sharon, thanks for paying a lot of efforts in uniting the team at the very beginning. Actually, your
enthusiasm shown before everything settled is the most important thing for us: teammates are not familiar
with each other and we feel nervous and simply don’t know what to do. You said,’ I’ve got a picture of the
whole play in my mind’ really motivated us to put in efforts afterward. Although you have to concentrate
on acting finally, still we will never forget your role and hard-work. One thing to improve: please be on time,
Ha-ha!
Ryan, I really want to say something about this guy: HE IS NOT A BIT SHY AT ALL! Ryan’s good at telling
jokes in a very ‘cold’ way. When you say one sentence, he can pour out ten sentences to reply and those
are mostly sick jokes. And he loves dirty jokes too… However, Ryan, you really bring love and happiness.
Your existence gives us a lot of chance to laugh and relax. I’m not kidding!
Tracy, you are quite an introvert person in our group. (Maybe it’s because we are all noisy guys…) You
may not do many great things for the group, or making us laugh like Ryan does, but you treat the drama
seriously, practice hard and try to do your best, that’s good. Sometimes you just be there because your role
is a bit lighter, but that’s already give support in some way. We don’t feel lonely because you’re there, and
everyone is there. Only then can we feel like being supported, and thus get the energy to go on.
Kevin, you said that, PTM is not a competition. What is it? I think it is a fulfillment. A fulfillment of
friendship, love, and life in SPACE. Of course, I can’t deny that the course spend me a lot of time, waiting
people, amending things. Yet, I still enjoy the process, which I can’t feel the same in the other courses. And
it helps me to get on well with my team and the whole class, adapt to the new environment more easily,
and that develop my sense of belongings towards the college. (Well, it’s really lucky to have my teammates
to be my partners)
Actually, my friends had advised me not to take PTM in the first semester, since it may lower my GPA and
thus the chance of entering the University. I know I can only do limited things (such as paper-work) for the
team and I don’t think I’m doing well, because I’m a total novice (I understand the truth lately). But after all,
I don’t regret making such a decision as I think it worth my while.
TRACY
I just want to say thank you to Kevin, to my group mates. Thanks all of you gave me a chance to express
myself. PTM is an excited lesson, I love it and I enjoy it.
I have no performance experience before, when I heard I am the character in this drama, honestly, it
scared me. I think this is a big challenge for me and I am afraid if I can’t do things perfectly. Luckily, all of my
group mates are very nice, they are patient, helpful and professional. They always teach me how to
perform well, what skills I should use, what actions, sounds, facial expressions I should have. We had lots of
practicing, everyone are cooperative, keep going and try doing the best. We knew each other gradually
through the practices, lots of fun when we met because we use the lines in our conversation, not only can
make us to remember the script of the drama but also we treat it as a funny game. We shared our things
when we talked, shared the foods and drinks when we practiced. It’s a good memories and the day was full
of substance.
One thing I was amazing that is about henry, his magic tricks was cool and I love the balloons which
made by him. Also, thanks anna helped us to buy the props, I know it’s quite difficult to find somewhere
have sold the costume. We put lots of effort in this drama and we hope the final show would be perfect.
Before the performance, I ‘m nervous but I know they are being with me, I’m not alone, I must to try my
best!!! Finally, it’s a good show and we are proud of ourselves, then we had lunch together in pizza hut. It’s
a good time and i treasured it.
ANNA
Drama, to me, is something which starts from nothing to a complete show. From brainstorming ideas,
writing the script, reforming the team, to rehearsing the final show, I can really feel the power of teamwork,
which is such a strong feeling that I have never experienced before. At first, I have the idea of telling a
clown’s story because we as Associate Degree students actually are like the clown – people may look down
on us, treat us as failures. However, if we can believe in and love what we are doing, actually everything is
alright. This is how the idea comes to my mind at the very first beginning. Furthermore, at first I actually do
not know this drama is for whom. Just before the final show, I know. I work hard on this drama and want it
goes perfectly, just because of our team. I want to present this drama to our team members, for
appreciating their efforts and time put in it. This drama is definitely different from what I have seen or
participated in before. Although it is neither the biggest and the most gorgeous one nor the one having
experienced cast, for me it is the most unforgettable one. I confess that I do not have the talent of
performing on the front stage, but I can still work hard on backstage and make everything fantastic. I am
really proud of being a student in the Process of Theatre Making class.
PTM does not only teach me things about drama, but also the right attitudes towards life, especially
the life in this college. I can still remember Kevin’s sayings about life. For example, ‘love never fails’ and the
metaphor about a plane. All these have made me waken again, after the failure of A-Level examination.
What this course requires are courage, appreciation, enthusiasm and participation. What I have got from
this course is a refreshed attitude towards my life. Drama makes me to be confident again, as well as
believing in others. Apart from Literature in English that I studied in Form 6 and 7, Process of Theatre
Making is another course which can give me food for thought. Now, my plane is really flying. And I can give
Kevin an answer of the question he asked on the lesson before the final show, ‘PTM is not a competition,
but an appreciation.’
RYAN
At the beginning of the lesson, I really want to choose other subject. It is because you told me that this
lesson has lots of work loads and need to spend lots of time to practice .The most important thing is you
told me that you never give a A grade to the student. This make me want to choose other subject as I want
to have a higher grade to make me go to the university. However, I don’t change this lesson, as I can’t find
other class to choose. In fact, I am lucky as I don’t change this lesson. It is because this lesson let me have
lots of fun and push me a lot.
Firstly, this lesson let me have lots of fun. It is because I never touch the thing which related to the
drama. All of these things are very interested to me like the lighting or such of the things. In fact, the most
of the important thing is I make lots of good friends in this lesson. Both of them are very interested, we
always have lots of fun together. This is a great time with them.
Secondly, this lesson pushes me a lot during the beginning of school. It is because it gives a first
assignment to me then this make us to work hard more early. This makes us to change our mind of playing
to the studying. After that, I think most of us are run faster than other student in this collage.
In short, I am very thankful of you as your lesson let me learn lots of think. You told lots of your
experience, all of these are very useful to me. The most important thing, you make me go to school on
time.
YUKI
I love watching drama and I wanted to be the one on the stage. I think the actors and actresses are
shiny. I thought it was easy to produce a drama when I chose the process of theatre making course. I
thought I needed to spend time to practice only. I thought the actors and actresses got all the glory.
It was totally different with my thought when I went through the course. There was so much work to
do before the day on show. I learnt that a drama should be worked with a team. A lot of people need to
support the show behind the stage such as director, SM and DSM. They also put a lot of effort. Although
they will not shine on the stage, their effort should not be neglected. I am happy to work with my cheerful
and supportive and hard-working group mates.
Beside what I have learnt about theatre making, I have learnt a lot from what Kevin said. The words
from Kevin are meaningful. I still remember what Kevin said on the first lesson. He said love never failed
and he said if we failed, that meant we did not have enough love. These words made me think a lot. I will
always remember Kevin’s words and keep my love in my heart all the time. Kevin always said that we
should love people and should not treat people as a tool. Team work can never be successful if we only
treat people as a tool. We should love our team mates and be supportive to them. The feeling of working
with team mates to achieve the same goal is wonderful.
This course is hard and time consuming. However, I really enjoyed being a student of Kevin.
HENRY
Rather than saying something like "good job, team!" or anything I have learnt from the production. I would
like to say sorry to my whole team.
Right after our production, the time when we were all relaxed and were enjoying our feast. What bursted
into my mind was my behavior during the whole preparation, I even felt a bit of shamefulness by that... I
think I had made too much so-called "suggestions" during the rehearsal and indeed these "suggestions"
might had slowed down our rehearsal progress! Though we had never quarreled throughout all rehearsals
and our rehearsal progress was still quite good, but right now I really feel sorry for making those
"suggestions", hope my team mates would forgive me if I had bothered them too much.
Besides, what makes myself feel like hoping to dig a hole and hide into it was that my unprofessional
behavior. I know I am a absent-minded person. I forgot my lines, my props, and even one of the arranged
rehearsal! I know that if I would put more of my attention on them, I might not forgot! Anyway, it was too
late for swearing "I won't do it again". Sorry for any troubles caused by me everyone!
It is the end, it is really the end of this production... Hope everyone would work hard and LET'S GET A
GOOD GPA!!!

KAN
The show was finished now and everyone was so happy that they have shown all their efforts on stage.
Now I understand the hardship of the production on stage and back stage. Although it takes time and there
were hardship, I really found it interesting though out the whole process.
There were some places gone wrong during the play.
1) Lighting: In scene 3, DSM turned off and on the light while Henry wasn’t ready.
2) Sound: The sound cut into a wrong moment before the clown show started.
3) Acing: Henry had a failure on the word “certainly”.
In fact, these were very small mistakes and didn’t really influence the audience. I did ask for some
opinions from directors from other class, fortunately, their comments were mainly positive (if they are
honest enough). Director of PTM-01 class, Matthew, claimed that the appearance of the daughter, Zoe, was
a little bit confused to audience. I also believe that he was right to say so, because we could not produced a
“Key” image for Zoe while changing script. I was delighted with a few audience agreed that the clown show
was vital to the show. It was the most interesting part of the play, they said.
I have to thanks Ryan first because he substituted my DSM position in order to share my workload in the
middle of the production. I knew he was not good at machinery. Although he was a little frighten during the
play, he tried his very best to provide the best performance he had ever had.
Second, I should never miss out the sincere and enthusiasm of Anna and Vicky. They responded all the
communication we had. They spent a lot of time to tidy up our script and designed perfect back staging,
they designed and practiced changing scene. In addition, Vicky worked hard to design and produces the
beautiful poster we had before the play. Finally I really appreciated Anna could make up ten lovely photo
frames within a few days. Also, she was one of the writers of the script, so that she could always give
thoughts about the play while Sharon and I are directing. The back stage was so good that could operate
the best coordination to the actors. We had the best team forever and I will never forget these almost three
months cooperation.
