Extend Read Across America: The Road to Super Readers Leads

    Home

March first, schools around our district celebrated Dr. Seusss birthday

by participating in Read Across America, a national event that has

schools, libraries and community centers focus on reading.

This fun day is a great opportunity for families to re ignite a love andpassion for reading at home. Children who read at home are more likely

to be successful students at school.

Build on Read Across Americas fun Dr. Seuss theme and spend a week

reading Dr. Seuss books as a family for 20 minutes each night. Close the

week with a movie from The Cat in the Hatseries and a meal of green

eggs and ham. You and your family could continue these themes using

his/her favorite book series or a nonfiction topic like ants or space.

Reading doesnt need to be complicated though. Allotting at least 20

minutes each day to cuddle together on the couch with a book is all it

takes to begin building roads that will lead your child to libraries, book

    stores, and success in school.

My turn, your turn strategies invite your child to read to you after you

have read to them. Listening to your child read aloud gives you an idea

of strengths and weaknesses that can be built upon. Use this time to

encourage, not correct. Direct your child toward materials that are

comfortable for him to read and understand. Extend this time, and have

your child listen to you read about science and social studies topics that

will introduce new vocabulary and background knowledge he can draw

upon when these topics are discussed in school.

Most importantly, use Dr. Seuss day to make reading fun again!
