Psychotherapy

• In order for the College to begin operations, the Psychotherapy Act, 2007 must be fully proclaimed by the Ontario Government.

• Although much work has been done and proclamation was anticipated in late 2012, It is now anticipated that the full proclamation will occur some time in 2013 or 2014.

2) What is Psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a term used to describe the process of treating psychological disorders and mental distress.

During this process, a trained psychotherapist helps the client tackle a specific or general problem.

Almost all types of psychotherapy involve developing a therapeutic relationship, communicating and creating a dialogue and working to overcome problematic thoughts or behaviors.

2) What is Psychotherapy

There are many different therapeutic approaches and just a few are listed below:

Psychodynamic Therapy

Psychodynamic therapy is based on the assumption that a person is having emotional problems because of unresolved, generally unconscious conflicts, often stemming from childhood.

Interpersonal Therapy

Interpersonal therapy focuses on the behaviors and interactions a patient has with family and friends.

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

Cognitive-behavioral therapy helps people identify and change inaccurate perceptions that they may have of themselves and the world around them.

Humanistic therapy

This approach emphasizes people's capacity to make rational choices and develop to their maximum potential. Concern and respect for others are also important themes.

Integrative or holistic therapy

Many therapists don't tie themselves to any one approach. Instead, they blend elements from different approaches and tailor their treatment according to each client's needs.

3) What can I expect in a session

Many times you will work in ways that may be unfamiliar to you. Perhaps you will be creating art work, writing in a journal, meditating, talking or engaging in some type of physical activity.

You are asked to step outside of your old way of being and consider new options, new perspectives, new possibilities, and new insights.

3) What can I expect in a session

At times these sessions bring up old and unpleasant feelings or memories. This is normal and will be short lived.

We can expend large amounts of energy by unwittingly running from or hiding from the past.

Resolving our history and trauma can release energy that is now available to propel us forward.

Please consider Psychotherapy

Please consider Psychotherapy for yourself, your family and your friends.

There does not have to be a negative stigma attached to recognizing our struggles and seeking help.

Remember, as we first heal the world within us we will in turn heal the world around us.
