Course Description This course introduces a scientific framework to explore important questions in psychology, neuroscience and behaviour. Using psychological research methods to understand learning, cognition, and social psychology, this course helps learners to develop skills to integrate, evaluate and examine information that is useful in applied settings. The intended learning outcomes are to: Integrate knowledge from research design, learning, cognition, and social psychology Apply the language of psychology in real-world settings and connect with current events Critically evaluate scientific information, data and research methodologies Discover how psychological theories help assess, predict or change human behaviour

ANoteAboutTestsWithpracticequestionsinthishandbook,Pre-QuizandQuizzes,youmightbewondering“whyaretheresomanytests?!”.Thesimpleansweristhattestinghasbeenshowntobethemosteffectivewaytolearninformationinthelongterm.Retrieval-EnhancedLearningManystudentslikelyviewtestingasanegativenecessityoftheircoursesandwouldprefertohaveasfewtestsaspossible.Thinkingabouttestingthiswayisduetoyearsofexperiencingtestsasahigh-stakesassessmentoflearning.Thisisunfortunategiventhefactthattestingimproveslearning.Overthepasthundredyears,researchonthecharacteristicsofhumanlearningandmemoryhasdemonstratedthatpracticetestingenhanceslearningandretentionofinformation(e.g.,Dunloskyetal.,2013;Roediger&Karpicke,2006a).Practicetestingcantakemanyforms.Itcanrefertopracticingyourrecallofinformationbyusingflashcards,completingpracticeproblemsorquestionsinatextbook,orcompletinglow-stakestestsaspartofacourserequirement.ThisprinciplewastheprimarymotivationforredesigningtheMacIntroPsychcoursetohaveweekly,lowstakesquizzes.AnexcellentexampleofthepoweroftestingmemorycomesfromastudybyRoedigerandKarpicke(2006b),whereinundergraduatestudentswerepresentedwithshort,educationallyrelevanttextsforinitialstudy.Followinginitialstudystudentseitherstudiedthematerialagain,ortookapracticetest.Afinaltestwastakenafterashortretentioninterval(5minutes)orlongretentioninterval(2days).Afterashortretentionintervalrestudyingproducedbetterrecallthantesting(81%vs.75%).However,withthelongretentionintervaltestingproducedsignificantlybetterrecallthanrestudying(68%vs.54%).Thus,aftertwodays,performancedeclined27%forstudentswhorestudiedthematerial,butonly7%forstudentsthatpracticedrecall.Interestingly,providingstudentswiththecorrectanswerfeedbackafteratestenhancesthepositiveeffectoftesting.Withfeedback,learnersareabletocorrecterrors,andmaintaintheircorrectresponses.Moreover,takingatestandreviewingfeedbackcanenhancefuturestudysessions.Researchshowsthatwhenastudenttakesatestbeforerestudyingmaterial,theylearnmorefromtherestudyingsessionthaniftheyrestudywithouttakingatestbeforehand(e.g.,Karpicke,2009).Thisiscalledtest-potentiatedlearning.WhydoestestingimproveretentionofinformationandhowcanIuseit?Explanationsforthepositiveeffectsoftestingfocusonhowtheactofretrievalaffectsmemory.Specifically,itissuggestedthatretrievinginformationleadstoanelaborationofmemorytracesandthecreationofadditionalretrievalpaths.Togetherthesechangestomemorysystemsmakeitmorelikelythattheinformationwillbesuccessfullyretrievedagaininthefuture.Thissuggeststhattestingisnotjustanassessmenttool,butalsoaneffectivelearningtool.AsastudentinthiscourseyoucantakeadvantageofretrievalenhancedlearningeachweekinpreparationforyourweeklyQuiz.Thisbeginswithstudyingwebmodulecontentearlyintheweek(e.g.,SundayorMonday).Youcanthenengageinretrievalpracticeasaformofreviewafteryourinitialstudysession.AtthispointyoushouldbereadytocompletethePre-quizandreviewthefeedback(byWednesdayorThursday).Thisgivesyoutheopportunitytotakeadvantageoftest-potentiatedlearningwhenyoureviewcontentagainbeforecompletingyourQuizonFriday.Thissuggestedscheduleofstudying,andincorporationofretrievalpracticewillhelpyoulearnandretainthecoursecontent.Engaginginthisprocesseachweekenhancesyourlong-termmemoryforcoursecontentandthereforeadvancesyourpreparationsforthefinalexam!Suggestedfurtherreading:
