    I. Summary of the Movie

"I don't need no baby. I don't want no trouble. I just want to make pies. That's all I wanna

    do. Make pies."

Jenna, who is a waitress in a diner located in the middle-of-no-where America, is also a "pie

genius," naming her tantalizing confections after the tumultuous events and emotions of her daily life.

She's hoping that one of her pastries, like her "Kick in the Pants" Pie, might even change her life - if

she can just win that $25,000 pie contest.

Married to a man who lacks confidence,a jealous, controlling, and abusive man named Earl, in

the bathroom of the restaurant along with her two female waitress coworkers, Jenna takes a pregnancy

test which turns out positive. She remembers that it happened the time her husband got her drunk a

month ago. After learning this, she immediately bakes an "I Don't Want Earl's Baby" Pie.

Since she hates her husband, she keeps him in the dark about the unwanted pregnancy, but is

determined to have the baby. But the pregnancy eventually changes the course of events in her life,

giving her an unexpected and newfound confidence via letters to her unborn baby. She goes to her

trusted doctor and brings a pie to give her. Instead of her usual old aged female doctor, a young

awkward doctor fresh out of med school will see her through the pregnancy. She dreams of escape

plans, squirreling away tip money from her titular job and soliciting advice from her two friends and

co-workers, while peevishly and secretly attending doctor's appointments with Dr. Pomatter.

Then Jenna finds herself betraying her original partner for the new fling, only to realize a

deeper lesson and go back to the first love. But instead of going back to her husband who she never

loved, she went to her real love which was baking pies. When her baby girl was born, Jenna and her

girl baked pies and shared the same bond as Jenna's mom and her.

    II. Character Analysis

    A. Describe Each of the Main and Secondary Characters

Jenna Hunterson A lovely, affectionate, good-hearted young woman who is trapped in an

unhappy marriage with her overbearing husband and whose only solace is baking out-of-this-

world pies. She has an extraordinary talent for making tasty pies, inspired with her daily

emotions and trials. When she discovered that she's pregnant, she doesn't exactly jump for

joy. Motherhood was never in her plans. But later, she then gains the courage to embrace

independence and create the life of her dreams.

Dr. Jim Pomatter I could find the whole meaning of life in those sad eyes. The kindly,

good-looking, stammering doctor may seem like a fantasy counterpart to Earl. Hes gentle,

kind, respectful and accepting. He and Jenna embarked on a passionate affair and closefriendship. Aside that hes a good looking man who treats her with love, generosity and

simple kindness. Hes handsome. Hes kind. Hes neurotic. Hes married.

Earl Hunterson He embodies perfectly as a toxic, inseparable mix of neediness, infantile,

jealous and abuse husband. A mean tempered, jealous, controlling, dominating, possessive,

suspicious, abusive and capable of violence. He takes all the money Jenna earns, demands

that she agree with his every thought and sentiment, and forces her into a self-defensive shell

of passive conciliation and submission. a jealous jerk who is essentially a child himself

Becky One of the working southern women trying to make the most out of the little theyve

been given in life. Jennas friend and co-worker at Joes Pies.

Dawn One of Jennas friend where she solicits advices and also her co-worker at Joes Pies.

Old Joe The bad-tempered, difficult diner owner owns the pie shop where Jenna works. He

is a curmudgeonly diner owner who encourages her to escape from her bad marriage and

begin a new life elsewhere. He considers Jenna as his only friend, leaving her a handmade

sketch of her face and a check for $270,450, and a message urging her to start fresh.

Cal Jennas sour boss who speaks nothing but of work-work-work. It was later found out

that he also have a secret affair with one of the waitresses of the diner they work in.

Francine Pomatter The loyal, madly in love wife of Jennas gynecologist.

    B. How did each character in the movie influence the decision of Jenna at the end?

Dr. Jim Pomatter It was the affair he and Jenna had that gave her the confidence and strength

to finally break out of Earls tyranny. He influenced Jenna in a sense that made Jenna realize

that love is not all about sex. It is about the feelings of trust, of comfort and of respect one

    undergoes over the relationship.

Earl Hunterson The possessive, suspicious, abusive and jealous husband who pushed Jenna to

her limits, finally resulting to the emergence of her strength, Earl never imagined she possesses.

It was his abuse which made Jenna banished him from her life with a power and decisiveness

he is unable to oppose. Becky and Dawn The very friends of Jenna, where she solicits advices and comfort from.

They made Jenna realize the abusive acts of her husband, telling her that even in their own

imperfect worlds, they would never trade places with Jenna. They are the ones Jenna always

spend her time with, listens to and is her comfort haven, knowing that they known her lifes

    miseries for a long time.

Old Joe He always tries to make Jenna smile, even for a while. He always convinced her to

start a new life. He at times guesses the situation Jenna is in, based from his past experiences.

He kept on reading some verses from the Zodiac signs published on the newspaper, for Jenna to

reflect on. It was even his idea of starting anew imprinted on the mind of Jenna, which raised

    her consciousness at the end.

    C. How are Jennas feelings and behavior related to her pie making?

One of Jennas special abilities aside from the fact that she is indeed incredible in making

delicious pies is her talent in making her daily life situation a part of the pie shes making. As for

example she feels frustrated by the positive result of the pregnancy test, she makes an I-Dont-Want-

Earls-Baby Pie. And when she feels the intense feeling of hatred arousing in her veins over her

abusive husband, she makes an I-Hate-My-Husband Pie. A Fallin-In-Love-Chocolate-Mousse-

Pie made for dawn, which at that time was having a date. She made the Kick-In-The-Pants-Pie

which might change her life- vying to win in a pie contest. Earl-Murders-Me-Because-Im-Having-

An-Affair-Pie according to what she felt at that moment; she says You smash blackberries and

raspberries into a chocolate crust. She did an I-Cant-Have-No-Affair-Because-Its-Wrong-And-

I-Dont-Want-Earl-To-Kill-Me-Pie. After realizing the unfaithfulness she has shown towards her

husband.Jennas feelings and behavior is reflected on what, how and why she made such pie. It is in a

way her means of self expression. She often will close her eyes and imagine what kind of pie shell

make based on that current feeling of hers.

    D. How do you asses Jennas decision at the end of the movie?

Jennas decision at the end was a mere reflection of the accumulated feelings she already had

kept deep inside her. Choosing to be free from the chain of her possessive and abusive husband

together with the cutting off of the immoral relationship was all meant by Jenna as shes heading

towards a new start. The baby, and the happiness she felt knowing that she will never be alone again,

greatly motivated her towards the fulfillment of her plans of stepping into a new life. It was indeed

the wisest decision Ive ever encountered in time. Leaving off everything behind- all the miseries, all

the heartaches and the entire fulfillment she has gotten from husband and her fling. Deciding to follow

wise Joes advice, following the right path, finally finding yourself and building a whole new world

together with the person worth living for was a golden decision she pursued in time.

    III. Evaluation of the Movie

    A. How do you like the Movie?

I havent really had even a small idea of what the whole story is going to be based on its

introduction. All I saw was all these mouthwatering ingredients she puts on inside the pie. But when

the story unfolded itself, I really had the hard to catch up my breath. It was really enjoying, humorous

at some sense and with its mild love story; youll really be taken away. It was not just all about pies. It

was indeed all about life and the faces of realities baked in each different flavored pie. The movie has

its unique way of uncovering the different ingredients of life which makes it pretty tempting to give in.

If only life was as easy as a pie Ill sure give it a try! Two thumbs up. A movie to watch indeed.

    B. What are the scene/s that affect/s you the most?

I couldnt deny the fact that I really am a cry-baby when it comes to watching films. I was very

emotionally affected at the scene where Old Joe, which was about to undergo his operation, visited

Jenna whom he refer to as his only friend, not considering his condition. Leaving a handmade sketch

of her with the label to my only friend and even leaving her a huge amount of money with the

instruction: start a new life. Part of our life is but meeting different persons. Persons we change our

lives with or persons intended for us to change. We do not know which point in time it will take place.

But one thing is certain; itll happen out theresomedaysomewhere.

    C. Describe the prenatal stage of Jennas pregnancy in terms of emotional state.

During her prenatal stage of pregnancy, Jenna tends to be emotionally disturbed at times. She had

undergone different mood swings a feeling of depression, stress and fear, all of which is evident in the

pies she makes. She disliked her husband touching her-sex life continues to fluctuate. She also sees

herself as fat and ugly- some serious emotional changes and a feeling of anxiety about what life will be

like with a new baby- a phenomenon that is most likely to happen during prenatal stage among women.
