Books

You may search the catalog by subject From the library homepage go to Quick Links

and select Catalog. For a beginning search use “keyword” and

type in Psychology. For more specific books use “subject” and type

in Psychology. You may limit your search further by selecting

“limit search” from the blue boxes at the top of the page.

Finding Journal Articles

From the library homepage, click on “Databases by Name.”

Click on the letter “p” and scroll down until you come to “PsycARTICLES” or “PsychINFO” and click again.

Above the search box in blue lettering, you will see “Choose Databases.” Click on both “PsychARTICLES” and “PsychINFO”. You will now be searching both at the same time.

Avoiding plagiarism

What is plagiarism, exactly? According to the Dowling College Student Handbook, "plagiarism is the act of representing someone else's ideas, products, or words as one's own" (p. 21). Basically, it's stealing.

Most plagiarism occurs when students don't pay close attention to what they're doing during the research and writing process. Here are the most common causes of inadvertent plagiarism: Sloppy note-taking. Cutting and pasting from websites. Cutting and pasting from electronic journal articles. Forgetting to put quotes around someone else's words. Forgetting to add a citation to a paraphrase. Omitting a citation for a table, graph, or photograph used in a

paper or presentation.

However, you may not realize that there are some other forms of plagiarism to avoid, too, such as:

Purchasing a paper from an online vendor and turning it in.

Borrowing a paper from a friend (who's already taken the class) and turning it in.

Turning in a paper you wrote from another class without telling the professor.

Turn It In

Go to http://turnitin.com/login_page.asp and create your own student user profile.

Enter the class # and password provided. For each assignment you will submit papers by uploading them

from a disk/hard drive, or cutting and pasting from a document. Turnitin accepts Mircosoft Word, WordPerfect, Postscript, PDF,

HTML, RTF, and plain text.
