FLEXIBLE DIAMOND

PSI Flexible DiamondProducts, manufacturedby the 3M Company, arethe most innovativeproducts available for

grinding and finishingextremely hard and toughmaterials. The flexiblediamond technology is a

precision micron grading system, consisting ofdiamond particles anchored in electroplated nickel(Ni) pellets, that provides precise cutting anduniform surfaces. Its ability to polish the mostdifficult materials quickly makes Flexible DiamondProducts a necessity for grinding and polishingceramic, glass, stone, carbide, composites, exoticalloys and other hard to grind materials. The

products are offered in a full range of grades forgrinding and finishing.

PSI Flexible Diamond Products are availablein 6 forms, 6 micron grades, a variety of backings,and all share a color coded system for easy gradeidentification. The forms available are Bands,Belts, Discs, Files, Hand Pads, and Sheets

Diamond bands are used for many differentapplications and are available in 1/2", 3/4",1", and2" diameters and 1" in length. Ask PSI about the

band holders.

Flexible Diamond Belts have the durability andaggressiveness of diamond on backings thatrange from very flexible to heavy duty. FlexibleDiamond belts are available in 1/2" to 15" wideand 9" to 200" in length.

Flexible Diamond Discs have a variety of sizesand backings to suit your needs. Most disc sizesare available with a Plain (PB), Pressure SensitiveAdhesive (PSA), QRS (Hook & Loop), or Magneticbacking. Roloc discs are available in 1" to 3"diameter. Some applications are available with aCenter Water Feed application as well. PSI alsostocks all applicable back-up pads for a variety oftools.

Color coded Diamond Files have the durabilityand aggressiveness of diamond on a highstrength, plastic holder in 4 different shapes andsizes. Diamond files are ideal for hand work on

small, difficult-to-grind materials, and areas thatare hard to reach with conventional tools.

The color coded Hand Pads have thedurability and aggressiveness of diamond on a

high strength, flexible 2.25" x 3.75" pad. Diamondhand pads are used for applications such as handfinishing ceramics, composites, quartz, stone, andplastics.

Flexible Diamond Sheets are available in a

DIAMOND MICROFINISHING FILM

Diamond Microfinishing Film Abrasives(DMFF), from PSI, are a set of new tools availablefor hard-to-grind applications. DMFF Products,manufactured by the 3M Company, can replace

traditional coarse abrasive films commonly usedon superfinishing equipment. Designed especiallyfor fast finish reduction on hard materials, DMFFrolls allow target finishes to be achieved in fewerpasses for greater productivity. With DMFF,superfinishing times can be cut in half or more,compared to traditional diamond honing stonesand coarser diamond lapping film.

Excellent finish is achieved by the precisiongrading system used to select the diamondabrasive particles for each grade. Classified bythe more accurate micron grading system, particlesize grading is held to much tighter tolerancesthan conventional abrasive products. This resultsin a higher density of the specified particle sizeavailable to do the grinding required. Thiscontrolled uniformity of particle size, combinedwith electrostatic coating of the polyester filmbacking, provides an unexcelled grinding product.

Product consistency is achieved andmaintained through the grinding steps by theconsistent 5 mil caliper of the dense, polyesterbacking. Unlike the traditional paper products, theabrasive particles cannot "recede" into thebacking. This feature results in shorter grind timesand longer life because the abrasive particlesremain at the "cutting" interface. Shorter grindtimes mean less heat generation in the materialbeing ground. Longer life means improvedeconomics.

When a finer finish is required, DiamondLapping Film can be used due to its ability topolish the most difficult hard and mixed hardness

materials quickly, without pull-out and withincredible results.

PSI Diamond Cloth Dry, manufactured by the3M Company, is a new resin bond alternative tothe traditional metal bond flexible diamondproduct. Diamond Cloth Dry helps optimize cost-

effectiveness in your finishing operations. Thesediamond products are used for finishing anddimensioning ceramics, carbides and hardcoatedmaterials.

These products consist of micron-gradeddiamond particles encapsulated in a bondingmatrix which is then bonded to a durable resinbacking. Diamond Cloth Dry is available in beltand disc form.

Diamond Cloth Dry is designed to provide

long-lasting cutting performance in a wide rangeof hardcoat finishing applications. Diamond Cloth is available in a wide range ofgrades and sizes. A choice of belts, discs, rolls,and sheets let you work with a wide variety of tools.

Compared to bonded wheels and conventionalabrasives, Diamond Cloth can provide a superiorfinish with fewer steps which reduces process timeand extends product life.

The water-resistant backing performs well inboth wet and dry applications. And the products

overall toughness makes them ideal for many hard-to finish materials such as stones, coatings,ceramics, decorative glass, composites, rubber andso more.

Diamond Cloth Belts have the aggressivenessof diamond on soft cloth backings. Diamond Clothbelts are available in 1/4" to 12" wide and 9-7/16" to183" in length.

3M DIAMOND LAPPING FILM

PSI Diamond Lapping Film, manufactured bythe 3M Company, is the most innovative productavailable for metallography and lappingapplications in many years. Originally developedfor audio/video reading head polishing, it is now

available in configurations to fit popular polishingequipment. Its ability to polish the most difficulthard and mixed hardness materials quickly,without pull-out and with incredible flatness,makes Diamond Lapping Film a product worthinvestigating for difficult material applications.

PSI Diamond Lapping Film is available in 3specifications and 9 micron grades. All share theprecision 3-mil polyester backing, color coded foreasy grade identification. The three types differ inthe method used to secure the diamonds

particles to the polyester film backing.

PSI Diamond Lapping Film Type A is a singlelayer of the specified grade diamond particlesresin bonded to the film backing. Type A isexcellent for polishing applications where verylittle material removal is required. It will have ashorter life than the other two types, but gives abetter finish grade for grade. Current applicationsinclude TEM sample preparation, printed circuitboard failure analysis and aerospace compositematerials.

PSI Diamond Film Type B consists ofdiamond particles encapsulated in small softceramic beads, which are then resin coated to thepolyester film backing. This results in a longerlasting, more aggressive product than the Type A

product. As the ceramic beads wear, freshdiamond particles are exposed to work on thespecimen surface. Successful applicationsinclude tungsten carbide specimen preparation,dental materials research, nickel base superalloys, high speed tool steel and others.

PSI Diamond Lapping Film Type P sharescharacteristics with both Type A and Type B.Type P consists of diamond particles directly

bonded to the polyester film with a very hardresin. This results in a product which worksaggressively due to the large particle size, butbecause of the harder resin, exhibits a long life.Diamond Lapping Film Type P is used for finegrinding and flattening prior to use of the otherproducts, if required.

The learning curve of Diamond Lapping Filmis somewhat steep, but the rewards are dramatic.Difficult materials can be processed in minutes.Particle pull out is eliminated because the

diamond cuts everything equally.
