AxisPSI PRODUCT REVIEW 2015

The uniqueLightfindertechnology makes

the cameraextremely sensitiveto low light, effectively allows itto ‘see’ even in darkconditions. WideDynamic Rangewith ‘DynamicCapture’ and

‘Forensic Capture’ provide homogeneous images, without too dark or too bright parts. AXIS 1615also features electronic image stabilization thatgreatly improves video quality in situations wherethe camera is subject to vibration.

LightfinderTechnologyAxis Communications’research anddevelopment have ledto the introduction ofthe new andrevolutionary

Lightfinder technology. The Lightfindertechnology is the result of a meticulous choice ofthe right sensor and the right lens, together withthe elaboration of the image data coming from thecombination of sensor and lens. The fusion ofthese factors – sensor, lens, in-house chipdevelopment and knowledge in image processing– provides network cameras incorporating thistechnology with outstanding performance.

Compared to any analog camera, theLightfinder technology will give a betterresolution and more lifelike colors, especially inlow-light conditions. The noise reduction of theLightfinder technology is vastly improvedcompared to any analog camera on the market, which in combination with the light sensitivity ofthe sensor gives a superior image quality. Also, since cameras incorporating the Lightfindertechnology are digital, it opens a broad range ofpossibilities, such as the usage of a progressivescan sensor, video intelligence analysis and videosurveillance systems.

Axis WDRForensic CaptureWide Dynamic Range(WDR) imaging is a methodused to produce imagesthat try to recreate the fullscene content in scenesthat have a dynamic range

that cannot be captured by standard cameras inone image. Axis’ WDR – Forensic Captureoptimizes video for forensic purposes by enablingan extremely high level of detail to be visible inboth dark and bright areas of a scene. AXIS Q1615with WDR – Forensic Capture applies advancedalgorithms to optimize image quality and includesthe ability to seamlessly transition between WDRand Lightfinder mode. Overall, this WDRtechnology makes it easier to detect and identifyimportant details in a scene.

Steady video during vibration

Gusts of wind tearing at a surveillance camera canmake it shake or vibrate enough to make imagescome out as useless blur. A heavy truck, or a train, passing close by can have similar consequences.A number of different technical solutions havebeen developed to cope with the problem, withvarying degrees of success. However, theintroduction of efficient gyroscopes incombination with cutting-edge softwareprogramming has accelerated the processtowards robust, real-time image stabilization.

Innovative installation featuresIn addition to Lightfinder, WDR Forensic Captureand Image stabilization, AXIS Q1615 also includesnew innovative features to help installers tomount the camera. The leveling assistance guidesto the correct level, meaning that the camera canbe installed wherever but always have a perfectimage. The auto rotation functionality flips theimage to the right orientation, also when CorridorFormat. Moreover, AXIS Q1615 supports focusassistant, remote back focus and pixel counter. The camera is further protected with shockdetection, a capability that sends an alarm topersonnel during attempted vandalism.

More features supported inAXIS 1615 Network Camera• Intelligent capabilities such as enhanced video

TexecomPSI PRODUCT REVIEW 2015

Mesh-networking is the process wherebyevery single wireless device is capable ofreceiving and retransmitting any signal from

any other wireless device on the network. The size, scalability and range of the entire system areextended as wireless signalling is no longer limitedby point-to point communications.

And where in the past wireless systems havesometimes proved unreliable when compared tothe wired alternative this is not the case today; apoint underlined with the news that Ricochettechnology from Texecom was recognised for itsadvanced performance and reliability in 2014 whenit won a Security Innovation Award fromBenchmark magazine.

The power of Texecom’s Ricochet mesh-networking system over point-to-point wirelesssecurity systems is made evident when installedin large-scale industrial complexes. Even whenusing the most expensive, high qualityengineered point-to-point wireless system;ultimately the size of the system and scope ofprotection is compromised by this limiting factor. With mesh-networking the range of the system isnot limited in this way, with multiple devicescapable of relaying messages to and from eventhe most remote locations in a building.

However it is no longer just the larger sites orbusinesses that can benefit from Ricochet withthe news that Texecom’s Premier Elite Series hasbeen expanded and enhanced with the recentrelease of new control panel models andperipheral devices. Designed to make the world asafer place for everyone, the Premier Elite Seriesnow brings commercial-grade security into a widerange of applications.

Entry level systems have often been toned downversions of their more ‘professional’ relation

however with theannouncement of five newPremier Elite wireless kitsfeaturing a selection ofcontrol systems andperipherals it is easy tofind the perfect kit to suitthe needs of anyapplication.

The kits allow users tobenefit from wirelesstechnology on a cost-effective basis and takesout the complexity ofchoosing which system isrequired. For the installerthere are many benefits offitting a wireless systemincluding the time it takesto fit and the flexibility ofbeing able to placedetectors in areas thatmight prove tricky in awired installation. Also theinstaller knows that the

Premier Elite technology is more than capable ofhandling any situation that can arise in a residentialapplication, so with its proven reliability it is agenuine ‘fit and forget’ system.

Each device is provided multiple signallingroutes to and from the controlling equipment. This built-in redundancy allows the entiresystem to be more reliable. If a connectionbetween two devices is lost (perhaps due tochanges in the building infrastructure), thenetwork ‘self-heals’ and automatically re-routescommunications via alternate devices. In thissystem as more devices are installed, the greaterthe reliability of the system.

The main aim of wireless is to make theinstallation process simpler, quicker and lessdisruptive to the owner of the protected premises.Texecom has developed a series of diagnostic toolsthat provide the installer with greater systemcontrol than ever before.

Commission Mode - Once a device has beenconnected onto a system, the device LED flashes toindicate adequate communication to the wirelessexpander. This is made possible by the bi-directional signalling across the mesh‑network andturns each device into its own signal strength meter.

Keypad Diagnostics - Any Premier LCD keypadcan simply be connected to Ricochet enabledwireless expander and a host of diagnostic featuresis made available. Devices can be learned orremoved from the system, signal strengthinformation and communication routing informationis all available on-screen.

PC Software - The most advanced diagnostic toolis the PC-based Ricochet Monitor software. Thissoftware provides greater visibility and control overthe wireless system performance than ever before.

From a simple, intuitive menu screen all devicestatus is available at a glance, with clear graphicshighlighting signalling performance. Deviceattributes can be configured and distributed acrossthe network in seconds.

Where the Ricochet Monitor software reallyexcels is with the graphical representation of themesh-networking system. The system literally‘comes alive’ when the graphical function isselected. Each device is shown on screen, in realtime, placed according to where the devicecommunicates across the network. It is instantlyvisible and clear which routes communicationsignals are taking and the overall networkperformance is demonstrated.

With the power of the graphical user interface, even complex systems can be diagnosed simply, providing confidence that the communicationplatform is robust and reliable.

The benefits for the installer are clear, but whatabout the customer? Ricochet is an established, proven solution for large scale applications but nowthat the technology is within products and systemsaimed at the residential market, all of the benefitsof commercial-grade wireless signalling areavailable to everyone. www.texe.com

Users can now not only adjust their IPcameras remotely, but they can control theirlighting in the same way too, via web

interface, video management system or new HTTPCommands.

Since its launch, VARIO IP PoE has picked up 5accolades including a Security Essen TechnologyInnovation Award 2014, and an IFSEC Award forBest CCTV System of the Year 2013.

Available in both Infra-Red and White-LightLED, VARIO IP PoE provides dedicated IP lightingfor network cameras, allowing for remote set up,

commissioning, operation andmaintenance of your lightingscheme, from anywhere on the

network 24/7. VARIO IP PoE can be operatedindividually or remotely in groups making it mucheasier to operate large CCTV systems.

New HTTP commands for VARIO IP PoE nowmake network lighting even easier, withconfiguration at device interface level rather thanat a software level. HTTP commands allow lightingto be fully integrated and controlled from anynetwork device, for a smarter system and lightingtriggered on demand as an active crime deterrent.Using lighting on demand in this way alsosignificantly reduces electrical consumption. AnAPI is also available for seamless VMSintegration, allowing quick and easy operation ofyour lighting within your overall security system.

When it comes to commissioning (fine tuning)your lighting system, which is often the mostchallenging and time consuming part, the abilityto remotely adjust VARIO IP PoE illuminatorsreduces visits to site, minimises labour time andcosts, whilst ensuring maximum performancefrom your system at all times.

In addition, its PoE capability allows for a muchquicker and more cost effective lightinginstallation onto an existing networkinfrastructure, with no local mains connections orspecial electrical labour required.

As the challenges and demands of an externalenvironment are so much greater thaninternal, different

products and technologiesneed to be considered.External detectors need tocombine reliability withpeace of mind.

The fundamentals of anactive infrared beam aresimple; a transmitter emits asignal, a receiver recognizesthat signal, and a break inthe signal causes thereceiver to report an alarm. The stability of this signal isparamount to the reliabilityand effectiveness of thesystem.

Most light sources emit aspectrum of light thatincludes infrared. This meanssuccessful beams must beable to discriminate theirtransmitted signal from otherlight sources. TAKEX werethe first company to develop and patent a doublemodulated signal that does not occur naturally or

by chance, ensuring better discrimination &reliability.

Every receiver uses a filtration circuit toremove background noise, providing a cleansignal for processing and validation. Phase-

Locked Loop circuitrycontinuously monitors thesignal strength to optimisethe performance, and on theintelligent HF models, Auto-Gain Control & Auto-GainLock allow the receiver toincrease sensitivity by up to300% to maintain integrity, even if 99% of the signal islost, whilst also warning thesystem of possible issues.

In a world filled withcompeting IR sources suchas headlights, remotecontrols, IR camerailluminators / floodlights, combined with harshenvironments includingtorrential rain, snow, fog anddirect sunlight, installershave proved time and againthat there can be nocompromise to ensure

success, making TAKEX beams the choice ofprofessionals worldwide.

OPTEX EuropePSI PRODUCT REVIEW 2015

Introducing SL-beams from OPTEX Europe

Active infrared (AIR) detectors have been apreferred method of perimeter detection, especially in an open environment that doesnot have a security fence or wall, and wheninstallers are looking for an affordable solutionfor either short or long-range distances.

But they have had their challenges. Aligningthe beams has often been a lengthy process, and if not done properly has led to problems offalse or missed alarms. Reliability has oftenbeen compounded by the environments wherethe beams have been installed. Climaticconditions including sun, rain and fog can alsomake a difficult situation worse. And whenstacked in towers or used back to back to covera large perimeter, the whole system canbecome quite complex and there is a risk ofcross talk.

OPTEX now provides a full range of activeinfrared beams, with the wireless Smart Line100m beams launched last year, and nine new, hardwired quad beam sensors available with60, 100 and 200 metre detection rangeslaunched this year.

What are the advantages of QUAD beamsversus twin beams?

Quad beams are significantly less prone tofalse alarms from wild animals or birds andwind-blown debris. For applications in ruralareas where animals are roaming around, theQUAD beams technology has proven veryreliable.

How easy is it to install and align a 100 or200m beam set?

At OPTEX we believe that the most criticalissue in implementing active infrared (AIR)beams is the alignment between thetransmitter and receiver, especially for long-range operation. Therefore a number of toolsand features have been specifically developedto make it as easy as possible. The colour ofthe beam has been made a vivid yellow colour, and a sniper viewfinder lens has been added,so the pairing beam can be seen at longerdistances.

Sound signals and LED features will alsoindicate how strong the signal is betweentransmitter and receiver. A visual LED signalgauge feature has been added to the receiverfor SL-QDP models, and on both thetransmitters and receivers for the SL-QDMmodel. With all these tools in place, aninstaller should have no difficulty to align longdistance beams on their own.

Does an installer need any special tool toinstall the beams?

Most of the tools required are included withthe beams themselves; they have anembedded magnifier glass, Sniper View Finderthat magnifies by two to make opticalalignment easier. Blocking plates are also

provided with the set of beams. The only toolthat the installer may need is a Voltmeter.

Can the Smart Line beams be affected bycross talk?

The channel frequency selection feature, available in the majority of the OPTEX SmartLine models, provides four different channelsand is designed to eliminate the risk of crosstalk. The only models that do not feature thechannel frequency selection are our entry levelwired and wireless models, the SL-QN and SL-QNR.

Are the beams affected by direct sunlightand reflection?

All kind of lights can affect the performance ofinfrared beams, which is why OPTEX took extracare to design a three-layered protectionsystem to ensure it wouldn’t affect theperformance of the sensors. Firstly, a filtermaterial is embedded in the front cover toremove visible lights. Then an additional filterensures that only IR beams from the samewavelength used by the sensor aretransmitted. Finally, a light disturbancecompensation circuit differentiates betweenthe beams generated by the sensors, or anexternal light source.

Can the beams be installed in towers?

They can and OPTEX can provide a full set ofwall mounted or free standing towers from50cm to 3m high. Mounting beams in towershas many benefits; it helps to protect thebeams against vandalism and can create avirtual wall by stacking two to three beamssets. Some of the tower housings offer theoption to add a light, a camera or additionalsensors to provide a complete system. Wewould recommend that installers read throughthe beam tower guide available on our websiteto see the different options.

If the beams are used for a lesser range thanspecified is this going to be a problem?

It can cause signal saturation if for instance a100m beam is used for a 60m-70m application.Having said that our mid- and high-rangemodels, SL-QDP and SL-QDM, feature variablepower adjustment enabling the installer to setthe level of power and avoid any signalsaturation.

If the installer chooses the wire free modelhow long will the battery last?

OPTEX advises that installers should use SAFTlithium batteries to get the best battery lifeexpectancy. In average, a transmitter andreceiver beam with two batteries each shouldwork for four years before needing replacing. The system notifies when the batteries needchanging via the low battery output. With fourbatteries in each transmitter and receiver, theinstaller can expect seven to eight yearsoperation.

AUTODOME IP starlight 7000 HD Get HD video images in extreme low lightsituations and capture moving objects in 720p HDresolution at up to 60 frames per second. The latestsensor technology combined with thesophisticated noise suppression results in a lightsensitivity of 0.052 lux in color mode and even0.0103 lux in monochrome mode. The cameraproduces full color images in the dark beyond thepoint where other cameras have turned tomonochrome images. Where others show no imageat all, it still delivers detailed monochrome images.

AUTODOME IP dynamic 7000 HDFull 1080p HD resolution, wide dynamic range andintelligent backlight compensation technologyensure that moving objects or those of interest areenhanced and can be easily identified in sceneswith simultaneously bright and dark areas, whichtypically challenge standard cameras.

Content Based ImagingTechnologyAll AUTODOME IP 7000 cameras feature ContentBased Imaging Technology. Captured images aretailored to the content of the scene. Depending onmovement, varying lightintensity, andback and frontlightfluctuations, the camerasettings arecontinuouslyand dynamically adjusted. This ensuresintelligent tracking and perfect exposureof objects of interest while keeping bitrateat the lowest level. Consequently yourstorage costs and network strain are reducedsignificantly without compromising video quality.

Perfect exposure every timeWhen viewing foggy or other low contrast scenes,

intelligent defog ensures the camera'svisibility is significantly improved. Thisfeature can be active continuously orautomatically activated using built-invideo analytics. If the camera detectsfog, the image contrast is adjusted toensure improved visibility. As soon asnormal viewing conditions return, thecamera settings are automatically re-adjusted again. Reducing storagecosts and network strain Quiet sceneswith little or no movement require alower bitrate. By intelligentlydistinguishing between noise andrelevant information, such asmovement, intelligent Dynamic NoiseReduction (iDNR) reduces bitrate by upto 50 percent. Because noise isreduced at the source during imagecapture, the lower bitrate does notcompromise on video quality.

Never lose track of objects ofinterestIntelligent Tracking automatically tracks movingobjects based on predefined alarm rules or asimple click. By intelligently distinguishingbetween single and multiple reference points, itprovides uninterrupted tracking with optimal imagecapture by dynamically adjusting the field of view.

Advanced IntelligenceThe AUTODOME IP 7000 family features built-inIntelligent Video Analysis (IVA). This helps youfocus on relevant situations by alerting you whenneeded. IVA also adds sense and structure tovideo data through metadata — allowing quickretrieval of relevant images from hours of storedvideo. Building Schools forthe Future is anationwide

scheme and the largestschool buildingprogramme since the1800s: worth £55bn, theLabour government’saim was to rebuild orrefurbish everysecondary school in theUK. Rochdale Council

implemented a five year planfrom January 2010 to December2014 for 11 schools, costing thelocal borough council £160m.Every school had to comply withthe local educational authority’sregulations for securing childrenand staff.

Capita Managed IT Solutionswere awarded the RochdaleBuilding Schools for the Futurecontract in 2010. They are theUK’s leading provider of business

Security Products from SiemensPSI PRODUCT REVIEW 2015

The IP revolution has had a dramatic effect onthe physical security equipment industry, allowing the development of new technologies

that would have been unimaginable just a fewyears ago. When it comes to access control, tokensand smartcards are replacing traditional locks andkeys, providing innovative electronic security thatoperates over a local area network (LAN).

Everything from getting into your car towithdrawing money from a cash machine isprotected, at least in theory, by some form ofaccess control. For organisations of all sizes, controlling access into and around a building is avital part of any security strategy that is designedto keep people, property and assets safe.

However, it can be difficult to monitor exactlywho is going in and out of a building, even if thereis a manned guarding or reception facility. IPaccess control technology means that not only canthis be managed, specific personnel can even begranted or denied access to certain areas atdifferent times, making it not only good for securitybut also, in some environments, for health andsafety. Also, in the event of a theft, it is possible topinpoint exactly who was where.

The proliferation of IP based technology hasopened up a new world of opportunity for securityinstallers and modern day access control systemscan be installed really quickly, thanks to ‘plug andplay’ design and yet still provide a verysophisticated level of operation.

Not only that, IP access control technology hasseen dramatic reductions in price over the past fewyears due to the increasing levels of competitionbetween manufacturers and the seeminglyboundless progression of the technologies used.

The latest state-of-the-art systems offer an

entirely multifaceted access control experiencefrom both installer and end user perspectives, andare easy to configure and operate. Just asimportantly, they have virtually unlimited systemexpansion capabilities which, in turn, offers anabundance of cost saving and centralisationbenefits. This scalability also means that there isno need for an expensive financial outlay, asexisting systems can simply be added to, offeringend users the benefit of knowing that the cost oftheir system will be proportional to the number ofdoors they need to control.

Every organisation is different, and even withina single building there can be many differentrequirements. The best kind of access controlsolution is flexible, robust and user friendly, andnext generation entry level systems are designedto suit a wide range of applications – from shopsand offices to schools and health centres.

When considering a system, it is advisable tochoose one with a flat system architecture that haseasy-to-use Internet based software and intuitivemobile applications that enable systemmanagement from almost any device, such as theAliro system recently launched by SecurityProducts from Siemens. Similarly, some costeffective systems even have MiFare card readerswith integrated LED screens to facilitate cardholderinteraction by displaying messages based on auser’s individual credentials.

The process of software configuration is alsomuch easier than most installers might have beenused to as, once the software is installed on asingle PC, it routinely detects the access point unitsin the system and automatically allocates IPaddresses to them. Software configuration is thencompleted using intuitive guided tasks, makingsystem set up quick and convenient. Even theaccess points are preconfigured for standardapplications, making them ready to use straightout of the box, and contractors can easily modifythe standard configuration to meet specificcustomer requirements.

It is worth noting that multiple systemintegration will continue to be a key market driverand the benefits are undeniable, whether at pointof construction or as part of an IP migrationstrategy. An access control system can act as acentralised security management system, delivering a powerful command and controlplatform to manage multiple system alarms.

The IP access control market is expandingrapidly – just as end users are becoming ever moresecurity conscious. All installers should be reapingthe rewards from getting involved with thistechnology which, thanks to the work of leadingmanufacturers, is now easier than ever to specify, install and maintain.

A year in review Over the course of the last twelvemonths PSI magazine has coveredthe launches of hundreds of newsecurity and safety systems. Somehave been outlined elsewhere in thispublication, however we thought youmight like to see a selection oftechnologies that also grabbed ourattention. Here is our look back atsome of the highlights of 2014….

Integrated analytics enhanced camerasSchneider Electric announced in 2014 newcapabilities to its Sarix Enhanced Range withSureVision 2.0. New features in the EnhancedRange include Pelco’s integrated analytics suiteand ONVIF profile G compliance.

The latest advancements and key benefitsinclude the built-in analytics suite usingalgorithms to monitor scenes continuously andwithout the risk associated with human error. The Sarix Enhanced Range now also leveragesedge storage to store video, audio, andmetadata to an SD card directly in the camerafor uninterrupted monitoring if the connectionto the VMS is lost.

SureVision 2.0 technology delivers low-lightcapability, true wide dynamic range (WDR), andanti-bloom technology and Sarix Enhancedcameras offer up to two full HD full frame ratevideo (up to 1080p 30 ips) using H.264compression for optimised bandwidth andstorage efficiency and two simultaneous, independently configurable video streams fordemanding applications.www.pelco.com/sarix

Three sensors with improved functionalityIn our January 2014 edition we revealed thatHochiki Europe had announced the launch ofthree new sensors, the ALN-EN, ATJ-EN and ACC-EN devices which had a number of features thatreportedly improve functionality and reducefalse and unwanted alarms.

Replacing the ALG-EN photoelectric smokesensor, the ALN-EN further refined theresponsiveness of the company’s HighPerformance Chamber Technology. Its designminimised the differences in sensitivityexperienced in flaming and smouldering fires, providing an optical chamber that was equallyreactive to all smoke types and which reducesthe possibility of false alarms.

The ACB-E heat sensor had been supersededby the ATJ-EN, which incorporated a variabletemperature heat element as well as a rate ofrise heat element – both of which can bemanaged from a control panel. This allowseither element, or both simultaneously, to playan active part in making the alarm decision.

Lastly, the ACC-EN took over from the ACA-Eas the company’s flagship multi-sensor. Itfeatures three modes, allowing the opticalelement, the thermal element or both to beactive. Like the ALN-EN it also has the distinctadvantage of utilising High PerformanceChamber Technology.www.hochikieurope.com

Remote ASD testing systemIn January 2014 we revealed thatDetectortesters had announced the release ofScorpion, a remote test solution for pointsmoke detectors and Aspirating SmokeDetection (ASD) systems. Testing of hard toaccess smoke detectors and ASD systemshad historically been a challenging task;often attracting high costs and significantdisruption or even worse leaving detectorsuntested.

Scorpion is a micro smoke generatorpermanently installed adjacent to a detectoror adjacent to a sampling hole on an ASDpipe – typically at the end of the run. Thesmoke generator is connected to a Scorpioncontrol panel mounted at a convenient, easyto access location at ground level. Functionaltesting of the detector is then easily achievedusing the Scorpion control panel.

Installations to date have included liftshafts, ceiling voids, IT server rooms, warehouses, and archives.www.detectortesters.com

Easy retrofit global readersLast year, Stanley Security launched theOneprox GS3 range of Global Readers foraccess control systems. The GS3 Readerscome in both low frequency and multitechnology models and are compatible withthe PAC KeyPac, Wiegand and Stanley’s ownaccess cards or tokens. The multi technologyreaders also work with Mifare / DESfire EV1cards or tokens and, with Stanley’s Opsfeature, can be secured using 128-bitencryption. Using the Ops feature means aproprietary code is applied to the card /token which, along with the card’s CSN (cardserial number), can only be read by a OneproxGS3-MT Reader for effective security.

The readers can reportedly be retrofittedwith ease, allowing for simple migration ofexisting users onto new or additional accesscontrolled doors.

The GS3 readers provide Class 3 walltamper option compliant to UL 294 and ULCS319, enabling connection of the reader toany intrusion system that requires an arm /disarm reader. This feature allows for onetoken / one reader range to secure the entirebuilding, as opposed to requiring an extratoken and reader solely for the intruder alarmsystem, for both convenience and added

security. Accordingly, they are approved to BSEN 50131-1 and BS EN 50131-3 for intrusionand hold-up alarm systems.www.stanleysecurity.co.uk

Dedicated network for security systemsProtectNet is a solution launched by Beamingthat we covered in PSI in February 2014. It hadbeen designed to tackle some of the issuesencountered by the security sector when itcomes to accessing information over a network. For example, not only do connections betweenCCTV cameras and Alarm Receiving Centres(ARCs) need to be reliable and secure at alltimes, often third parties who are based off site– such as alarm installers and equipmentmanufacturers – may need to access thenetwork remotely.

Opening up the network historically couldhave meant exposure to external threats. This, said the company, had called for a solution toprovide security companies with the peace ofmind that their network was safe and it was onlybeing accessed by authorised personnel.ProtectNet is set up so that only authorised staffcan remotely access the network withoutjeopardising any security or exposing any datato anyone outside of the organisation. www.beaming.biz

Wire-free CCTV and PIR unitESP added to its growing range of External Area Protectionsystems with a wire-free version of its GuardCam last year.According to the company, the GuardCam WF provides anideal solution for the surveillance and protection of externalareas around domestic or light commercial properties.Images are captured by wire-free CCTV cameras built into PIRcontrolled security lighting units and digitally transmitted toa choice of indoor receivers with integral SD card recordingand user controls.

GuardCam operates on a 2.4GHz frequency featuring FHSSdigital technology to eradicate interference from other wirefree devices and provides a range of up to 150m. Up to fourtransmitters (GuardCam WF-T) can be paired to a singlereceiver (GuardCam WF-MR with built in 7 inch screen or(GuardCam WF-SAR) for direct connection to a television.it

One of the most popular features of the GuardCam range isthat they don’t appear to be cameras. Users - especially indomestic installations - may not wish to create a high securityprison look to their home. However they are happy to havesocially acceptable security lights installed. This semi covertnature of the GuardCam range also fools the intruder. Anatural reaction is to look toward the source of a triggeredlight and therefore also directly into the camera.www.espuk.com

Multi threat fire alarm for complete protection An algorithm within the fire alarm fromPanasonic launched last year allows users todetect smoke, heat and carbon monoxide(CO) at the same time. The alarm wasdesigned to be the solution for applicationssuch as theatres with artificial smokegenerators, or factory settings where oil mistmay be present. Because it only triggerswhen smoke, heat and carbon monoxide aredetected, the Panasonic 4402 promises highreliability in fire detection.

The chemical CO sensor lasts for up to fiveyears and, said the company, consumes verylittle power. In the case of contamination to asmoke chamber within the alarm, or achemical sensor reaching the end its usefullife, a service signal will notify the need of areplacement. The alarm detects smoke usingan infrared light LED and a photodiode withtwo lenses, while a thermistor detects heatand the CO sensor is a chemical type. business.panasonic.co.uk

First aid alarm point moduleBull Products now introduced a combinedfirst aid alert and call point alarm module forthe Cygnus wireless fire alarm system in ourJune 2014 edition. The first aid alert and callpoint alarm uses a single battery pack towork across the Cygnus wireless system witha category 1 radio frequency ensuringmaximum range. The system has thecapability of linking together 480 units in 15different zones around a site with each thenhaving the capacity to accommodate 32 units.

When a first aid alert is raised, each firstaid device will beep intermittently every 8seconds, and a message is sent to the controlpanel to alert the first aider and can also

trigger a paging system if required. Thepaging system is wired to the control panelwhich has a designated output and transmitsalert messages to handheld devices carriedby first aiders.

Similarly, the call point function which isused to raise an alarm, activates all otherdevices around the entire site, these devicesnormally situated in prominent places such asmain escape routes and fire points. It alsohas a sounder with an output of 120db and abeacon is incorporated on the face of thealarm for visual alert in excessively noisyareas where ear defenders are worn. www.bullproducts.co.uk

Cleaning up the imageCameras that are installed on poles or vehiclesoften provide jittery video streams due to strongwind or, for speed domes, high zoom factors. Inorder to solve this problem, all RIVA Full HDcameras include a video stabiliser softwarelicense as a standard feature at no extra costs. In addition, RIVA offers two standalone videostabilisers for analogue cameras with D1resolution of 702x576 pixels.

Both solutions are designed for pole orvehicle mounted fix cameras or PTZ cameraswith a high zoom factor. Using algorithms suchas the analysis of the image background, burnt-in text and moving objects are ignoredautomatically. Furthermore, the video delay iswith less than 80 milliseconds.

The one channel video stabilisers, withanalogue in- and output, are installed as plugand play and work at temperatures betweenminus 20 and plus 60 degrees Celsius.Additionally, the model RS1000A includes anautomatic fog reduction control and providesclear images even in misty visibility conditions.www.rivatech.de

Communicating with lightRevealed in 2014, a light-based wirelesscommunication network developed by pureLiFicould become an essential tool for governmentand business in combating terrorism and

cybercrime. The new system offers a secure wayof exchanging information over networks, usinglight rather than radio waves to communicatebetween devices.

Professor Haas, its inventor and pureLifiChief Scientific Officer said: “Unlike existingwireless systems whose security vulnerabilitieshave received extensive media coverage inrecent months, pureLiFi’s systems are almostimpossible to intercept.”

The new light-based communicationtechnology, known as Li-Fi, could provide asubstantially increased solution to enhancedata security to businesses seeking to improvedata protection, from government and defenceorganisations, to financial, public sector, pharmaceutical, or any ‘high data risk’industries.

Because Li-Fi signals travel in directionalbeams between an access point and a terminal, and vice versa, a potential interceptor wouldneed to be in the overlapping space of both lightbeams. Even an unencrypted Li-Fi access pointprovides better security than Wi-Fi. www.purelifi.com

Managing premises via remoteaccessCDVI launched the ATRIUM-100 access controlsystem to the market in PSI September 2014.The system allows a user to manage theirpremises, via the internet using a smartphone, tablet or web browser. ATRIUM’s embedded

web server gives instant results, and providescontrol of devices as well as critical reports.

Developed on the back of the ATRIUM-10,the capacity has increased from ten to 100readers, but includes more as CDVI’s MD, AlanWalker, explains: “We launched ATRIUM-10 in2012 as a basic access control system with the

capacity to control ten readers – weneeded to gauge how the end userwould react to a system that could bemanaged by the traditional method ofa desktop computer running somesoftware, but could equally bemanaged remotely using the internet. The results over the last two yearshave confirmed our view that accesscontrol, and the management of it, isready to evolve away from thetradition of a dedicated hostcomputer. The power and speed ofthe internet, along with evolving IPtechnology, has created theacceptance that it is ok to “manageon the move”, and ATRIUM-100 issimply taking its place alongsideother product sectors which offerremote management technology”.

The increase to 100 readerssatisfies the capacity requirementand also the demand from installersfor features such as CCTV and alarmintegration, interlocking, email alerts. www.cdvi.co.uk

Biometrics custom kit The Custom Kit from ievo lets users incorporate ahost of options alongside the standard ultimateand micro fingerprint readers including cardreader integration, increased template capacityand Power over Ethernet (PoE) among others. This allows users to effectively create their veryown bespoke biometric access control system tosuit the needs of specific projects.

Customers can tailor their own readers asthey require. For instance, if there is already acard reader at the site, customers can replacethe card reader with options that let thebiometric readers use most pre-existing cards. They can also provide a biometric template onthe card, reducing their reliance on a centraldatabase. For users wanting to use identificationmode (1:N search), ievo offers a standard

capacity of up to 10,000 fingerprint templatesand can be expanded to 50,000 templates.

By using PoE to power the control board, reader installation becomes faster, easier andmore cost-effective. Wireless or Bluetoothcommunication can be used instead of a LAN.Now, one control board can handle both aningress and egress reader reducing overallhardware and installation costs. The unit can befitted with a Two Line Screen, ideal for time andattendance applications in which users want tosee the date and time they scan in and out. These additional functions will not change thelook of the standard ultimate and microfingerprint readers, so users can enhance theiraccess control system without physically alteringthe product.www.ievoreader.com
