Welcome to the PSGCAS Alumni Newsletter. Let me at the outset welcome our 1990-93 batch graduates to our college to celebrate their silver jubilee PSG CAS ReCALL scheduled on 4th-5th of August 2018. This is a golden opportunity to visit the new facilities at our college and experience the joy of living your college youthful days. Do not miss this once in a lifetime opportunity. Come & celebrate in large numbers. I thank them, on behalf of the association for promising Rs 2 Lakhs towards scholarship fund. Thanks to the individual donors.

PSG Arts Alumni Association Annual General Meeting is on 23rd of July where we will review this year’s functioning of the association & plan the activities for 2018-19.

1989-92 batch all subjects met on 5th August 2017,

1990-93 B.Sc. Bio Chemistry batch met on 6th August 2017,

2002-2017 batch Visual Communication & Electronic Media met on 10th September 2017,

1995-98 batch Computer Science alumni met on 25th November 2017,

1981-84 batch all subjects met on 10th December 2017,

1985-88 batch B.Sc. Physics alumni met on 23rd December 2017,

1988-91 batch B.Sc. Botany alumni met on 21st January 2018,

Commendation Ceremony for Commerce alumni held on 2nd February 2018 and

Doubles Badminton Tournament for PSG Alumni & Faculty held on 24th & 25th February 2018.

The 1986-89 & 1989-91 B.Sc. & M.Sc. Computer Science batch alumni met on 7th July 2018. They enjoyed their homecoming to their alma mater. The faculty & staff definitely enjoyed their visit .More such meetings should take place. Around 4000 graduates pass out of PSG CAS every year & hence we could have a few alumni batch meet every month. You are most welcome to conduct your batch meetings.

I would like to extend my gratitude for your overwhelm-ing response to our first edition of ‘CASIANS,’ the Alumni News-letter of PSG CAS. We are proudly presenting you the next edition recording the events from April to June 2018. It covers events conducted and coordinated by various departments and the Alumni Association of PSGCAS. It includes events conduct-ed during vacation time and marks the beginning of the next academic year covering the reopening of the College. We have outlined the admission and elections followed by celebrations and competitions hosted by various departments. Winners of International sports competitions are also a part of this edition. Meetings conducted for organizing the mega Silver Jubilee Re-union of 1990-93 batches of all the departments is a pinnacle of this newsletter. PSG ARTS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION

The PSG College of Arts & Science Alumni Association has a full-fledged office from the year 2007. The Alumni Executive Committee meets once in three months.

One of the main purposes of our Alumni Association is to support a network of former graduates who will, in turn, help to raise the profile of the college. They participate as mentors and donors for the students.

Alumni Association awards scholarships to meritorious students. Every year, our alumni association celebrates Teachers’ Day and honors all the past and present teachers of the college. It organizes two to three fund raising programmes with the support of the Office Bearers and Committee Members to help the students through scholarships. Number of alumni get-togethers and Silver Jubilee Reunions are organized by the PSG Arts Alumni Association.

NIRF RankingAmong the Arts and Science colleges in India, PSG College of Arts & Science secured the 11th Rank consequetively for the second time in 2018 in the National Institutional Ranking Framework by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

ISO TrainingThe College has taken initiatives to upgrade the ISO Certification of the College from ISO 9001:2008 to ISO 9001:2015. For this purpose an agency, “The Consulting Co,” Coimbatore has been engaged to train our Internal Auditors for the certification process. The first one-day training of Internal Auditors was on 4th & 5th April 2018. A total of 53 faculty members representing various departments participated in the programme and were certified as Internal Auditor ISO 9001-2015.

Admissions 2018Admission process for UG courses were started after the publication of results for +2 examinations. Admissions were done by duly formed committees following Government norms for communal and other reservations.

For postgraduate courses, admission process was started after the publication of UG results by Bharathiar University.

The sale of applications for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in both the aided and unaided streams was started by the Secretary, PSG CAS on 11th April 2018. Having initiated digitalization at our campus, the applications for the postgraduate courses were made completely online this year. Number of applications sold for the different streams are as follows:

The entire admission process was transparent; the college attracted meritorious candidates across the state and outside.

Total number of seats for UG under unaided programmes was 2770 and under aided programmes was 830. For postgraduate courses, the applications were made only online. College ReopeningThe College reopened for the senior students of UG & PG programmes on 18th June 2018 and for the students of I year UG programmes on 25th June 2018.

Orientation ProgrammeAn orientation programme for the first year UG students was organized on 25th June 2018. The Principal welcomed the gathering and gave a detailed presentation on the salient features and functioning of the College.

Details regarding PSG Arts Alumni Association, Grievances Cell for Women and Anti-Ragging Committee were presented to the students and parents through respective Staff In-charge.

Principal introduced the Heads of all Departments to the students and the respective HoDs took their students to their Departments.



Induction Programme for First Year Undergraduate StudentsAn induction programme was organized from 26th June 2016 to 29th June 2018 to sensitize the freshers on the academic culture of the Institution and to enable them to bridge the gap between the school and collegiate education.

Fourth International Day of Yoga – 2018

International Yoga Day was celebrated on 21st June 2018 at GRD Auditorium. The function was organized in association with the World Community Service Centre (WCSC – Coimbatore Zone). Thiru.K.Periaiah, IPS, Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City inaugurated the function. The Secretary, Prof. Dr.V.Selvarajan and the Principal, Dr.D.Brindha participated. Yoga demonstrations were performed by the members of WCSC and students. The Chief Guest distributed prizes for the winners of various competitions. More than 900 students and staff participated.

NPTEL Workshop

A one-day Workshop on National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) was jointly organized by the NPTEL, IIT Madras and the Department of Library, PSG College of Arts & Science on 22nd June 2018 at the Library Seminar Hall. The Principal, Dr.D.Brindha inaugurated the workshop. Prof.Dr.Prathap Haridos and Ms.Bharathi Balaji, NPTEL, IIT Madras delivered lectures. A total of 250 faculty members from 80 colleges in and around Tamil Nadu and Kerala attended the workshop.


National Statistics DayThe Department of Statistics, PSGCAS celebrated the National Statistical Day themed on “Quality Assurance in Official Statistics” on 29th June 2018. Quiz and essay writing competitions were conducted for the students of St. Thomas Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Karuvalur, and Sri Hayagrivar Higher Secondary School, Avinashi. Around 160 school students participated in the event.

Swachh Bharat Summer Internship- 2018In pursuance of the objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission launched as a national movement on 2nd October 2014, the Ministry of Human Resource Development in association with the Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin and the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, is launching a ‘Swachh Bharat Summer Internship’ programme, which is aimed at engaging college students in the government cleanliness drive. Accordingly PSG CAS has so far registered 111 students and 2 Nodal Officers and has been working in two locations.

Location, Service & Time

1. Harijan colony, Devarayapuram, Thondamuthur, Coimbatore (11 days in June2018). Survey of socioeconomic status of people, building toilets, waste segregation, etc. were carried out during the month of June 2018.

2. Mallegoundanpalayam Panchayat, Karadivavi, Tirupur district (4 days in May 2018). Survey of socioeconomic status of people, building toilets, waste segregation, awareness on nutrition and tobacco, rainwater harvesting, health problems, first-aid, regular medical check-ups and clean environment were carried out.

Basic Training Program on Human RightsOne-day Basic Training Program on Human Rights sponsored by the National Human Rights Commission, Government of India, was organized by the Department of Social Work, PSGCAS on 15th April 2018. Around 158 beneficiaries from various streams participated. The programme was inaugurated by Mr.S.Sivashanmugam, Assistant PF Commissioner - Legal, the Guest of Honour. He addressed the gathering on Human Rights from a more practical and realistic understanding. The inauguration of the event was followed by three technical sessions under different themes.

Clinical Nutrition & Dietetics1. Dr.K.Kanjana, Head of the Department of Clinical Nutrition along with a team of five

students of I M.Sc. Clinical Nutrition, organized a study on “Nutritional Profile of the Participants” in the Annual Summer Adolescent Students Camp for Girls at the Divine Temple of Consciousness, Aliyar, held from 11th to 30th May 2018.

2. Dr.K.Kanjana along with Dieticians, Ms.Divya and Ms.Karthika, conducted a training programme to the village people of Mallegoundanpalayam, on Healthy Eating Habits. Also Dr.K.Kanjana along with students organized a street play on the same topic.

Ms.P.Srinivetha, a student of B.A. Economics, won Gold and Silver medals in the 10m Air Pistol Women and Mixed Events respectively at the 49th Grand Prix of Liberation 2018 held at Plzen, Czech Republic from 2nd to 7th May 2018.

Again, Ms.P.Srinivetha won two Bronze Medals in the Women and Mixed Events for 10m Air Pistol Shooting at the International Shooting Competitions of Hannover 2018 held at Hannover, Germany from 8th to15th May 2018.

Mr.K.Kamalraj, III B.Sc Zoology won Gold Medals in the South Asian Junior Athletics Championship 2018 (SAJAC) held at Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo, Sri Lanka on 5th & 6th May, 2018 and in the 18th Asian Junior Athletics Championships 2018 held at GIFU, Japan from 7th to 10th June 2018.
