PSALM 144
What are mere mortals that you think of them?
Daily life?
what to buy?
where to go?
how to cope?
something’s that happened?
something you’re afraid might
happen?
David’s daily life:
3000 years ago 3000 miles away Enemy soldiers Foreign adversaries Barns, sheep oxen, Breached walls, Cries of captivity
yet full of the same questions..
Principle of daily living:
1. Look to God
2. Look at yourself
3. Look at the problem.
1. Look to God
If you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 4.29
Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labour on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare. Isaiah 55.2
Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness Matthew 6.33
David – a man after God’s own heart?
Messy! But he kept his eyes on God!
Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle.
2 He is my loving God and my fortress, my strong-hold and my deliverer,my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples
under me.
Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines;though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food;though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls; yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Saviour.
Psalm 144. 1-2 Habakkuk 3.17-18
Principles of daily life:
1. Look to God
2. Look at
yourself3. Look at the problem.
Look at yourself:
PSALM 144. 3-4LORD, what are human beings that
you care for them, mere mortals that you think of them? They are like a breath; their days are like a fleeting shadow.
Look at yourselfOh, who am I, that for my sake, my
Lord should take frail flesh and die?
God cares for you! He thinks of you!
God so loved the world that he sent his only Son, so that YOU might not perish, but have eternal life!
Principles of daily life:
1. Look to God
2. Look at yourself
3. Look at the
problem.
Look at the problem….
Powerful enemies (v.6)? Liars and deceivers (v.8)? Breaching of walls (v.14)?
I will sing a new song to you, my GodOn the ten-stringed lyre I will make music
to youTo the one who gives victory to kingsWho delivers his servant David. (vv 9-10)
Look at the problem….
Relationship? Cannot forgive? Financial
collapse? Hopes dashed? Choices to be
made? Tempted?
I will sing a new song to you, my God
On the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you
To the one who gives victory
Who delivers his servants!
Look at the problem….
People who need help
Bereaved Drained Unable to make
choices Refugees In need of healing
We can sing for them:
I will sing a new song to you, my God
On the ten-stringed lyre I will make music to you
To the one who gives victory
Who delivers his servants!
2 Corinthians 1.3-5
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.
