Centre for Democracy and Governance Launched at the University of Huddersfield

The.new.Centre.for.Democracy.and.Governance.at.the.University.of.Huddersfield.was.launched.by.Baroness.Shirley.Williams.on.26th.April.2006.The.Centre.builds.on.the.well-established.and.externally.recognised.tradition.of.Politics.research.at.the.University..Over.the.years,.this.has.developed.with.a.distinctive.focus.on.issues.around.Democracy.and.Governance..Members.of.the.Centre.have.a.wide.range.of.interests.and.political.standpoints,.ranging.from.urban.regeneration.to.Conservative.Party.leadership,.from.radio-communications.to.the.Orange.Order,.from.feminist.theory.to.case-based.learning,.and.from.privatisation.in.South.Africa.to.the.politics.of.the.Simpsons..They.are,.however,.united.by.a.concern.with.the.processes.and.beliefs.through.which.some.groups.and/or.individuals.gain.political.voice,.while.others.are.excluded.or.marginalised.from.political.involvement,.or.participate.outside.conventional.political.institutions..This.has.led.some.members.to.a.related.focus.on.the.means.and.modalities.through.which.citizens,.aspiring.citizens.and.stakeholders.engage.with.the.changing.nature.of.governance.as.a.global,.international,.national,.regional.and.local.phenomenon.In.her.opening.remarks,.the.Centre’s.Director,.Professor.Valerie.Bryson.identified.some.of.the.distinctive.features.of.Politics.research.at.Huddersfield.as.its.cooperative.and.democratic.nature,.and.its.active.linking.of.research.to.teaching..She.stressed.

that.good.teaching.thrives.as.part.of.an.active.research.culture,.in.which.students.can.share.a.sense.of.intellectual.excitement.and.gain.access.to.a.wider.research.community..She.argued.that.it.is.important.that.research.in.relatively.small.Centres.continues,.as.this.keeps.movement.in.the.research.system.–.for.if.research.were.to.become.concentrated.in.a.few.specialist.universities,.these.might.become.inward.looking,.self-perpetuating.and.closed..The.links.between.Politics.research.at.Huddersfield.and.other.universities.was.illustrated.by.the.attendance.at.the.launch.of.two.former.Huddersfield.staff.members:.Professor.Tony.Payne.(1978-86),.recent.head.of.the.Politics.Department.at.the.University.of.Sheffield.is.now.heading.the.Politics.HEFCE.Research.Assessment.Exercise;.Professor..Andrew.Taylor.(1977-2000).did.much.to.build.the.Politics.research.culture.at.Huddersfield.and.is.now.Deputy.Head.of.the.Department.of.Politics,.University.of.Sheffield.Baroness.Williams.spoke.warmly.in.support.of.the.new.Centre..She.noted.that.it.is.strong.not.only.in.highly.academic.research.but.also.in.applied.research..She.praised.Professor.Brendan.Evans’.work.on.urban.regeneration.and.community.involvement.in.Manchester.as.particularly.important,.welcomed.the.case-based.learning.project.headed.by.Dr.John.Craig.and.Dr.Sarah.Hale.and.expressed.particular.interest.in.Professor.Valerie.Bryson’s.research.on.feminism.and.the.politics.of.time..Baroness.Williams.then.delivered.the.annual.Harold.Wilson.Memorial.Lecture.on.‘Human.Rights:.A.new.religion?’.to.a.packed.audience.from.the.university.and.the.local.community.

Politics.and.International.Relations.at.Royal.Holloway,.University.of.London,.is.a.young.Department..While.we.have.our.origins.in.the.Department.of.Social.Studies.and.Economics.established.at.Bedford.College,.University.of.London,.in.1919,.PIR.was.founded.only.very.recently.–.August.2004..This.followed.a.strategic.assessment.of.the.growing.research.strengths.of.the.Politics.and.IR.group.in.what.was.then.the.multidisciplinary.Department.of.Social.and.Political.Science..Since.2004.we.have.been.building.our.research.and.teaching.base.in.Politics.and.International.Relations..When.the.current.Head.of.Department,.Andrew.Chadwick,.joined.the.College.in.2001,.it.had.just.five.staff.in.Politics.and.IR..Today.there.are.fourteen.permanent.staff.and.two.postdoctoral.researchers..The.building.of.a.Department.that.has.clear.and.developing.strengths.in.exciting.areas.of.the.discipline.is.now.well.and.truly.underway..We.have.tried.to.create.an.environment.in.which.a.team.of.early.and.mid-career.scholars.can.play.a.major.role.in.shaping.the.future..The.Department.is.located.in.one.of.the.top.ten.higher.education.institutions.in.the.UK,.with.strong.institutional.commitment.to.high.quality.research.and.research-led.teaching..We.are.fortunate.enough.to.work.on.a.beautiful.parkland.campus.containing.what.is.arguably.among.the.most.impressive.architecture.in.UK.higher.education:.our.famous.Founders.Building.The.Department.currently.has.250.undergraduates.across.the.three.cohorts,.36.taught.postgraduates.and.22.research.students..Undergraduate.programmes.are.offered.in.Politics,.Politics.and.International.Relations,.European.Studies.(which.has.recently.been.formally.brought.into.the.Department).and.a.variety.of.joint.programmes.with.cognate.disciplines..At.the.Master’s.level.the.Department.is.now.in.the.third.year.of.its.MSc.in.International.Relations.and.the.second.year.of.its.MA.in.Democracy,.Politics.and.Governance..Both.programmes.have.recruited.strongly.

Greek Politics Specialist Group (GPSG) secures government funding

This.group.was.founded.in.the.autumn.of.2006.with.the.goal.of.exploring.the.issues.of.political.leadership.in.western.societies.from.a.determinately.political.perspective..Leadership.is.a.staple.of.the.other.social.sciences.but.it.has.been.relatively.neglected.in.the.political.mainstream.even.though.there.are.many.distinguished.studies.(dating.back.to.the.time.of.Machiavelli).of.political.leadership..The.aim.of.the.group.is.to.bring.together.academics.and.interested.observers.(and.participants).with.a.view.to.developing.the.theoretical.and.empirical.understanding.of.political.leadership..James.McGregor.Burns.once.remarked.that.leadership.is.‘one.of.the.most.observed.and.least.understood.phenomena.on.earth’;.with.this.in.mind.it.is.the.intention.of.our.specialist.group.to.set.up.conferences.and.workshops,.in.the.first.instance,.and.to.assist.or.promote.research.in.the.near.future..Although.the.topic.of.political.leadership.has.been.summarily.dismissed.because.of.its.assimilation.to.the.‘Great.Man’.view.of.politics.(a.direct.result.of.the.works.of.Carlyle.and.that.school.of.thought)..Yet.leadership.is.a.key.area.of.study.and.it.is.a.test.bed.for.assumptions.about.political.behaviour.and.models.and.approaches.in.contemporary.political.science..It.has.been.generally.agreed.that.leadership.as.a.political.institution.has.had.effects.on.the.wider.systems.even.if.those.are.uncertain.and.the.mechanisms.of.causality.are.disputed..The.group.looks.to.involve.American.contributions.based.on.the.work.of.the.students.of.the.presidency.as.a.phenomenon.of.political.leadership.in.its.discourse,.symbolism.and.‘hersthetics’..There.are,.of.course,.distinguished.studies.of.political.leadership.from.different.angles.and.approaches.in.the.UK.(these.include.the.works.of.Atkinson,.Blondel,.Ionescu,.and.of.Iremonger.and.others).but.these.need.to.be.supported.by.further.work.in.this.field..The.group’s.remit.is.wide.and.it.does.not.exclude.looking.at.the.ethical/moral.aspects.of.political.leadership,.rhetorical.leadership.as.the.role.of.the.political.entrepreneur,.leadership.in.the.solution.to.collective.action.problems.as.well.as.at.the.empirical.and.statistical.aspects.of.political.leadership.through.both.comparative.studies.and.case.studies..The.intention.of.the.group.is.to.open.up.the.exploration.western.political.leadership.from.the.viewpoint.of.the.discipline.in.its.many.aspects,.practical.and.moral,.and.to.disseminate.this.material..We.are.interested.in.comparable.western.systems.because.these.have.an.approximate.equivalence.and.they.face.similar.problems.of.governance.(we.have.excluded.dictatorship.and.military.governments.

Politics.(PREPOL).is.a.collaborative.project.involving.Politics.Departments.at.the.Universities.of.Nottingham.Trent,.Lincoln,.Birmingham.and.Central.Lancashire..The.project.is.worth.£250,000.and.is.part.of.phase.5.of.the.Fund.for.the.Development.of.Teaching.and.Learning,.(FDTL),.managed.by.Hefce.and.the.Department.of.Employment.and.Learning.(DEL)..The.main.aims.of.this.project.are.to:

•. raise.awareness,.relevance.and.profile.of.Politics.. and.International.Relations.in.schools.and.colleges•. establish.young.people’s.attitudes.towards.the.. .. study.of.Politics•. improve.the.quality.of.pre-entry.guidance•. aid.widening.participation.strategies.–.particularly.. focussing.on.women•. raise.awareness.of.the.transferable/employable.. .. skills.acquired.from.the.study.of.Politics.and.. International.Relations

In.order.to.meet.these.aims,.the.project.is.in.the.process.of.conducting.a.survey.of.young.people’s.attitudes.towards.the.study.of.Politics..This.has.been.carried.out.via.questionnaires.followed.up.by.focus.groups.run.at.a.selection.of.schools.and.FE.colleges.located.within.the.regions.of.the.participating.Universities..Once.more.data.has.been.collected,.the.project.will.move.on.to.work.with.these.local.connections.and.hopefully.other.interested.parties,.to.put.together.a.multi-media.Politics.guidance.

package.for.prospective.university.students..In.the.latter.stages.of.the.project,.the.project.team.plan.to.review,.evaluate.and.possibly.re-design.the.first.year.curriculum.at.each.of.the.participating.Universities.in.the.light.of.the.outcomes.of.the.survey.and.the.production.of.the.guidance.package..The.project.will.also.produce.a.report.on.good.practice.on.pre-entry.guidance.which.is.hoped.will.be.of.interest.to.the.Higher.Education.sector.more.generally.as.well.as.those.engaged.with.the.teaching.of.Politics.and.International.Relations.(IR)...

Initial Findings:So.far,.the.project.has.conducted.questionnaires.

at.a.selection.of.schools.and.colleges.located.in.Nottingham,.Lincoln,.Birmingham.and.Preston.totalling.353.students..Of.these,.79.(22%).were.currently.studying.Government.and.Politics.at.AS.or.A2.level..The.questionnaires.asked.students.a.range.of.questions,.such.as,.their.views.on.the.study.of.Citizenship.and.Politics.within.schools,.their.understanding.of.Politics.and.IR.and.what.these.subjects.might.entail.at.university.level,.and.their.perceptions.on.whether.studying.these.subjects.might.help.to.get.them.a.good.job.on.graduation..

The.results.from.these.questionnaires.suggest.that.most.students.did.not.find.the.issues.taught.in.the.study.of.Citizenship.at.schools.very.interesting.and.nearly.all.were.unsure.of.what.the.subject.was.about..In.line.with.this,.studying.Citizenship.had.not.made.them.want.to.go.on.to.think.about.studying.Politics.at.university..The.majority.of.students.indicated.that.they.did.not.really.understand.what.a.Politics.degree.would.involve,.(although.rather.more.felt.that.they.did.understand.what.the.study.of.IR.was.about),.and.two.thirds.thought.that.studying.Politics.or.IR.at.university.was.not.an.appealing.prospect.and.did.not.think.that.these.subjects.would.help.to.get.them.a.good.job.when.they.graduated..

An.examination.of.the.responses.to.the.questionnaires.by.gender.revealed.significant.differences.between.the.views.of.men.and.women..Proportionally,.nearly.twice.as.many.men.than.women.were.considering.taking.politics.or.IR.at.university.and.proportionally,.women.were.more.likely.to.express.a.difficulty.in.understanding.what.was.involved.in.studying.Politics.and.were.more.likely.to.view.both.Politics.and.IR.negatively.–.perceiving.it.to.be.either.boring.or.not.interesting.

These.initial.results.suggest.that.gender,.career.prospects.and.the.study.of.Citizenship.all.possibly.have.an.impact.upon.the.way.in.which.sixth.form.

students.perceive.the.study.of.Politics.and.IR.at.HE.level..In.order.to.examine.these.initial.results.further,.PREPOL.is.currently.returning.to.schools.and.colleges.to.carry.out.a.series.of.focus.groups...As.well.as.exploring.some.of.the.issues.raised.by.the.questionnaire,.the.focus.groups.also.invite.sixth.form.students.to.comment.on.a.range.of.current.pre-entry.guidance.material..Initial.focus.group.findings.broadly.confirm.that.there.is.a.significant.level.of.ignorance.as.to.what.the.study.of.Politics.and.IR.at.HE.level.entails..They.also.confirm.that.students.are.concerned.about.what.career.options.are.available.to.Politics.and.IR.graduates..Whilst.some.students.expressed.surprise.that.many.more.men.than.women.study.Politics.at.university,.they.suggested.that.this.was.probably.because.of.the.male.image.of.politics.–.as.represented.by.Parliament.and.the.fact.that.the.majority.of.politicians.are.male.

Next Steps:As.well.as.focus.groups.at.schools.and.colleges,.

This.year’s.workshop.took.place.in.a.convivial.atmosphere.in.Frankfurt/Oder,.the.lesser.known.German.city.of.that.name..Located.directly.on.the.border.with.Poland.and.only.an.hour.from.Berlin,.the.European.University.Viadrina.offered.the.perfect.backdrop.for.exploring.the.challenges.and.choices.facing.the.German.model.of.governance..Papers.on.Germany’s.role.in.EU.enlargement.(Christian.Schweiger).and.German-Polish.border.cooperation.and.European.security.(Alexandra.Schwell).were.particularly.fitting.in.this.context..They.were.complemented.by.papers.on.German-US.relations.(Klaus.Larres).and.the.Grand.Coalition’s.emerging.foreign.policy.(Ruth.Wittlinger)..Analysis.of.public.attitudes.towards.intervention.and.the.use.of.force.(Joerg.Jacobs).rounded.off.a.differentiated.survey.of.Germany’s.foreign.relations,.which.was.followed.by.a.lively.debate..

Recent.developments.in.domestic.politics.offered.an.inside.view.of.the.evolving.German.model..Hartwig.Pautz.focused.on.the.growing.influence.of.think.tanks.in.government.policy-making,.and.Werner.Reutter.assessed.the.constitutional.implications.of.the.vote.of.confidence.which.led.to.last.year’s.federal.election..Dorothee.Hermanni.questioned.notions.of.German.normalisation.in.the.light.of.unresolved.tensions.between.East.and.West.German.identities,.whilst.Claire.Sutherland.pursued.the.theme.of.national.identity.by.looking.at.recent.developments.in.citizenship.law.as.a.reflection.of.German.self-

The.bridge.on.the.German.Polish.border.in.Frankfurt./.Oder,.where.the.German.Poiitics.Specialist.Group.workshop.was.held.

The.Parliaments.and.Legislatures.Specialist.Group,.formed.in.April.2005,.has.had.a.fantastic.start.in.life,.due.in.no.small.part.to.the.willingness.of.its.members.to.get.involved.and.support.its.activities..Most.things.parliamentary.and.legislative.had.been.conspicuous.in.their.absence.from.the.life.of.the.Political.Studies.Association.until.the.creation.of.the.group,.and.many.academics.in.this.field.had.previously.squeezed.themselves.into.activities.organised.by.other.specialist.groups..Our.new.group.has.addressed.this,.and.it.has.led.to.a.good.deal.of.contact.amongst.parliamentary.scholars.that.might.not.have.taken.place.otherwise..Our.membership.now.amounts.to.around.50.souls.from.a.range.of.different.backgrounds:.lecturers,.researchers,.postgraduates.and.parliamentary.clerks.have.all.received.a.warm.welcome.upon.joining.

The.specialist.group.now.takes.its.place.alongside.a.number.of.other.similarly.interested.groups.in.the.UK..Personnel.from.the.Hansard.Society.count.themselves.among.our.number,.and.we.have.regular.news.items.appearing.in.each.other’s.news.bulletins..The.group.also.includes.membership.from.those.working.at.the.Constitution.Unit,.and.also.from.the.Study.of.Parliament.Group.

Specialist.group.members.are.kept.abreast.of.activities.through.regular.email.news.bulletins..These.bulletins.also.have.the.advantage.of.enabling.members.quickly.to.circulate.information.that.they.think.others.might.be.interested.in,.whether.it.is.news.items.from.the.parliaments.in.which.we.are.interested,.forthcoming.seminars.and.conferences,.or.new.publications.from.group.members.

Our.first.appearance.as.a.group.was.at.the.Association.Conference.in.Reading,.in.April.2006..We.ran.three.panels.at.the.conference,.all.of.which.were.largely.focused.on.the.Westminster.parliament..One.panel.looked.at.parliament’s.impact.on.legislation.and.war.powers;.a.second.looked.at.parliamentary.scrutiny.of.government;.while.the.third.examined.parliamentary.ethics.and.conduct..We.were.delighted.that.the.Parliamentary.Commissioner.for.Standards,.Sir.Philip.Mawer,.and.the.head.of.the.Parliament.and.Constitution.Centre,.Oonagh.Gay,.were.both.able.to.participate.in.the.third.panel,.and.offer.their.insights.and.experience.

In.June.2006,.we.held.our.first.annual.conference,.at.the.University.of.Sheffield,.which.was.dedicated.to.the.Westminster.parliament.and.the.theme.of.Reinterpreting.Parliament..This.one-day.event.included.

a.range.of.papers.and.works-in-progress,.around.such.diverse.topics.as:.the.myths.surrounding.discussion.of.Westminster;.the.legitimacy.of.the.House.of.Lords;.parliament.and.political.disengagement;.parliamentary.scrutiny.and.multi-level.governance;.and.the.utility.of.a.business.committee..We.were.also.fortunate.to.have.Sir.Bernard.Crick.attend.as.our.keynote.speaker.

The.International.Political.Science.Association.Executive.Committee.met.in.Santiago,.Chile.from.16th.to.18th.November.2006....It.was.my.first.visit.to.Chile.and.I.was.impressed.by.how.dynamic.a.country.it.is,.although.clearly.one.with.a.troubled.political.past...Political.science.in.Chile.and.other.Latin.American.countries.have.suffered.from.the.loss.of.a.generation.of.political.scientists.who.went.into.exile.in.periods.of.military.rule.

The.importance.of.the.next.IPSA.Congress.coming.to.Chile.in.the.run.up.to.the.country’s.bicentennial.celebrations.was.emphasised.by.the.welcome.we.received.which.included.a.reception.at.the.presidential.palace.and.dinner.with.the.acting.foreign.secretary...One.of.our.main.tasks.was.to.check.the.facilities.available.for.the.congress.and.the.readiness.of.the.local.organising.committee.to.stage.a.major.event.and.we.were.satisfied.on.both.points....I.was.appointed.to.the.Programme.Committee.of.the.2009.Congress.with.special.responsibility.for.panels.on.public.policy....The.overall.theme.is.‘Global.Discontent:.The.Dilemmas.of.Change’...We.want.the.2009.Congress.to.place.a.special.emphasis.on.Latin.America.and.the.Global.South.in.the.context.of.global.change.more.generally.without.excluding.other.themes....It.is.important.that.as.many.younger.scholars.as.possible.from.countries.such.as.Britain.take.part.and.in.that.connection.I.shall.be.investigating.possible.sources.of.funds.to.meet.travel.costs.

The.Executive.Committee.needed.to.find.a.venue.for.its.next.meeting.and.I.am.very.pleased.that.the.Political.Studies.Association.has.found.it.possible.to.host.them.at.the.Bath.conference..The.Santiago.meeting.coincided.with.the.biennial.meeting.of.the.Chilean.Political.Science.Association.when.the.new.president.was.elected.by.a.margin.of.two.votes,.a.challenge.I.did.not.have.to.face.as.I.mentioned.when.I.congratulated.him...The.IPSA.Executive.staged.a.plenary.on.the.state.of.world.political.science.at.the.Chilean.meeting.and.it.is.hoped.to.repeat.this.at.Bath.

Reasons to be cheerful … ‘Survey of the Profession 2006’Dr Jacqui Briggs, Chair, Education Sub-Committee

The.Political.Studies.Association.has.recently.completed.a.survey.of.members.of.the.profession..The.last.major.survey.took.place.in.2003.and.there.are.now.significant.grounds.for.optimism..Almost.500.academics.responded,.giving.their.views.on.the.profession..The.results.make.interesting.reading.and.provide.a.stimulus.for.those.wishing.to.enter.the.Political.Science.profession..As.pointed.out.in.a.recent.edition.of.the.Times.Higher.Education.Supplement.(1st.December.2006),.political.scientists.are.slightly.happier.with.their.profession.than.they.were.three.years.ago..There.are.a.number.of.positives,.fewer.academics.said.that.they.had.considered.leaving.the.profession.(52.2%.compared.with.62.2%.three.years.ago),.low.pay.is.less.of.an.issue.than.three.years.ago.(in.2003.57.3%.said.that.low.pay.made.them.consider.leaving.compared.with.28.3%.in.2006)..Slightly.more.of.us.are.members.of.a.trade.union.(up.from.23.8%.to.34.2%)..More.of.us.are.earning.over.£40,000.and.fewer.are.complaining.about.long.hours.(18.3%.compared.to.33.5%.three.years.ago)..Fewer.of.us.say.we.have.low.pay,.more.paperwork.and.say.we.are.stressed.than.was.the.case.three.years.ago..We.also.appear.to.be.taking.longer.holidays..This.greater.sense.of.job.satisfaction.could,.in.part,.be.due.to.the.subject.being.more.buoyant.than.in.the.past,.due.to.increasing.student.demand..Fewer.of.us.feel.we.have.been.treated.unfairly.due.to.gender.or.age.but.there.is.a.slight.increase.in.the.numbers.who.feel.that.they.have.been.treated.unfairly.due.to.their.ethnic.origin.(up.to.3.7%.from.2.4%)..As.one.respondent.states,.there.are.‘…too.few.ethnic.minorities,.too.many.white.middle.class.males’..Some.also.felt.unfairly.treated.due.to.being.on.a.temporary.contract.or.because.of.their.particular.research.area.

The.response.rate.(23.5%).is.relatively.low.but.this.is.perhaps.hardly.surprising.given.the.time.pressure.upon.colleagues.and.the.frequency.of.surveys..PSA.members.constituted.62.4%.of.those.who.replied,.whilst.Departmental.staff.made.up.37.6%..It.is.interesting.to.note.that.almost.half.of.our.respondents.have.only.been.in.their.current.institution.since.2000.and.also.that.over.25%.earn.over.£50,000..The.typical.political.scientist,.according.to.the.results.of.the.2006.survey,.is.white,.male,.born.in.the.1960s,.has.a.PhD/DPhil.and.no.dependent.children..Most.of.our.respondents.are.professors.and.work.in.the.‘old’.university.sector..Most.have.only.been.working.in.their.current.institution.since.2000..Most.teach.International.Relations,.Comparative.Politics.or.British.Politics,.teach.six.hours.per.week.and.supervise.two.research.students..It.is.interesting.to.note.that.95%.of.our.respondents.work.full-time.and.85%.are.on.permanent.contracts..Of.those.who.are.not.permanent,.30%.do.not.know.whether.their.contract.is.likely.to.be.renewed,.with.33.8%.saying.theirs.is.not.likely.to.be.renewed..The.majority.of.our.respondents.earn.between.£40,000.and.£45,000.

Trade.union.membership.is.up.in.2006,.compared.with.2003.but.65.8%.of.respondents.are.not.currently.a.member.of.a.trade.union..30.6%.of.respondents.have.applied.for.another.job.in.the.past.year.(roughly.the.same.as.in.2003)..With.respect.to.teaching.techniques,.political.scientists.use.a.whole.host.of.teaching.and.learning.methods..The.traditional.lecture.format.is.still.the.most.popular.but.staff.also.use.group.projects,.gaming.and.simulations.and,.increasingly,.web-based.resources.

The.results.are.generally.supportive.of.the.Political.Studies.Association.but.there.was.a.feeling.that.the.organisation.should.do.more.to.encourage.younger.members.of.the.profession..Respondents.felt.that.the.Political.Studies.Association.could.help.by.offering.greater.support.to.new.staff,.giving.greater.help.with.research.applications,.peer.reviews.and.mid-career.training..As.one.states,.‘Young.aspiring.members.of.the.profession.are.not.given.enough.opportunities’..Another.reinforces.this.viewpoint,.‘Support.new.members/academics..Provide.more.information.to.them.with.regard.to.the.“actual”.state.of.the.profession.(jobs,.research.applications,.surviving.the.peer.review.process,.etc’..Views.were.expressed.encouraging.the.Association.to.prioritise.publishing.journals,.research.promotion.and.representing.the.profession.to.policy.makers..In.summary,.whilst.the.survey.does.provide.an.optimistic.picture.of.the.profession,.there.are.still.areas.for.improvement.and.a.role.for.the.Political.Studies.Association.to.fulfil..
