The design of this study was an experiment that used a mixed within and between subjects design. There were two independent variables. The first was sentence type (positive, negative or neutral), with three levels. The second was tone of voice of the speaker (positive, negative or neutral), also with three levels. There was an additional between-subjects variable, namely whether the participant spoke English as their first or second language. The within-subjects variables were the type of sentence and the tone of voice,.
