Introduction
The hotel and leisure sector is constantly evolving, adding new
segments such as the boutique hotel, the golf resort, the apart-hotel
and the destination resort. Architectural and interior design is
vital to create a memorable experience, and sustainable design
is increasingly important in mitigating the impact of travel and
tourism on fragile environments.
PRP has designed numerous hotel and leisure facilities, from city centre
business hotels to luxury resorts, in climates ranging from temperate
to tropical. Our integrated teams of architects, interior designers,
masterplanners, urban designers and landscape architects can design
for any scale of development and for the most complex and sensitive
locations. Our environmental team ensures an appropriately
sustainable response to local environments.
Hotel and leisure design is about creating experiences, we consider every aspect of the project in detail, from the site through to the interior design

Whether we are designing a small boutique hotel in a city centre or a
multi-storey waterfront resort, we apply a rigorous approach to design.
We consider every aspect of the project in detail – starting with the site
and the opportunity it presents, assessing the impact on ecology and
environment – through to the interior design, furniture and ambience.
We work with clients to assess tourism demand and provide site
assessments to inform our architectural, environmental and landscape
response, and we can also assist in the development of new brands
and products. We work with our clients to develop sustainable tourism
and social development plans that are aligned to regional plans and
tourism investment programmes.

Bab Ezzouar translates as ‘gateway for travellers’; the design concept
for this mixed use development is derived from the name itself, where
a 5 star business hotel acts as a portal or doorway to the city of Algiers.
This multi-faceted scheme comprises a 300 bed luxury hotel with
serviced apartments, convention centre, shopping mall and retail
plazas, exclusive residential apartments and penthouses, cultural
centre and ancillary entertainment facilities such as restaurants, cafes
and a sports and wellness centre.
Drawing on the traditional planning principles of Arabian architecture,
with specific focus on passive design strategies, the proposal
celebrates a rich and sensitive heritage with contemporary inflections
and state of the art technology. The design creates interconnecting
courtyards lined with water channels, intricate rectilinear geometries,
micro-climatically receptive use of wooden screens or mashrabiya,
narrow shaded corridors and wind catching niches.
A world-class resort destination designed to preserve and enhance
the local ecology and natural resources, and to generate a social and
economic legacy for the local community.
Velika Plaza is a unique stretch of coastline spanning some 15km to
the north of Montenegro. The proposals centre around two major new
towns, Porto Milena and Velika Plaza Town, and four additional small
settlements and will provide for around 45,000 inhabitants and visitors.

At the heart of the vision is a desire to protect and enhance the
ecology of the destination. World-class facilities such as a marina,
specialist sports and leisure facilities, golf courses, hotels, spa,
conference centre, casino and hospitality academy will position
Velika Plaza as an international holiday destination.

Oxford Street is fast becoming a vibrant hub in one of China’s fastest
growing cities. It reflects the ambitious economic, environmental and
social goals for the region.
The development comprises six towers, two of which incorporate
hotels and four of which are residential. The two hotels add a
significant component to a mixed use quarter offering leisure,
residential and retail elements. The development makes a positive
contribution to the former industrial zone, responding to the river
valley and adjacent wooded hillside. Contributing to the client’s
aspiration for an exemplar sustainable development, the tower
buildings incorporate a series of aerial gardens that bring naturally
tempered air to sections of the buildings.

Located on the Black Sea, the development of the Olympic University
Plaza includes a new University Sports Business faculty, two hotels,
a 750 seat conference centre, student housing and 250 apartments
with retail units, cafes and bars fronting the promenade and beach.
The University faculty buildings and two hotels are arranged in a cross
formation with the conference centre at the heart. The University
faculty will accommodate 500 post-graduate students along with
student housing. The hotels, a 200 bed 4 star hotel and 150 bed
5 star hotel, benefit from dramatic sea views. The apartment buildings
also maximise their setting amongst the pine trees overlooking
the beach front.

The Park is a new sustainable mixed use development located at one
of the key entrances to Abu Dhabi Island. It is one of the first projects
to be designed in line with Abu Dhabi’s new Estidama sustainability
programme.
The hotel and office components are separated by a dramatic eleven
storey atrium with galleries running the length of the structure. The
20,000 sq.m office space is functional and pragmatic with a rectilinear
form. It responds to neighbouring Khalifa Park with the symbolic
reflection of the trees in the elevation. The 250 room Marriott hotel is
imaginative and symbolic using a combination of traditional Islamic
geometric patterns and the undulating forms of sand dunes as the
inspiration for its textured, irregularly-geometric form.

PRP completed the refurbishment and interior re-orientation of this
iconic, Grade II listed, 12,500 seater entertainment venue as part of the
Wembley City Regeneration Masterplan.
In revitalising this treasured building a new feature restaurant and bar
have been created overlooking the impressive double height foyer.
The scheme remains sympathetic to the original concrete structure
and provides an elegant and understated design solution in keeping
with the existing context.
The Arena has hosted, amongst others, acts such as The Beatles, The
Rolling Stones, Madonna, ABBA and Christina Aguilera and will be
hosting badminton and gymnastic events for the 2012 Olympic Games.

This 220 room 5 star luxury hotel is the first of seven ‘Pearls’ to be
restored in what is known as Edinburgh’s ‘String of Pearls’. It forms
part of Edinburgh City Council’s masterplan for the rejuvenation
and reactivation of the city’s most famous shopping thoroughfare.
Situated at the western end of Princes Street, this prominent hotel
is being refurbished for the Jumeirah Group. It will include high-end
retail units at both the ground and first floor level. The design
celebrates the former 1920s Art Deco department store by retaining
the existing façade. Additional guest rooms rise within a glass
envelope several stories above the existing properties and the
building culminates in a spectacular top floor restaurant with
views across the city.

The mineral waters in the city of Pyatigorsk are known for their healing
properties and have long attracted people, from all over southern
Russia, seeking treatment and recuperative holidays.
The 42ha site, located on the lower slopes of Mount Mashuk in
Pyatigorsk, aims to create a new health resort integrating high quality
hotel facilities with medical centres employing the latest technologies.
The leisure facilities include indoor and outdoor swimming pools,
a gym, tennis and five-a-side football pitches.
The masterplan centres around a new public square which will be
the focal point for all visiting the resort. The schemes orientation takes
advantage of the mountainside location and the associated clean
air and cooling breezes.

Gdynia is an historic 1930s naval, trade and industrial port city.
Over the last 20 years the city has transformed and reinvented this
area into a leisure, arts and tourist destination.
Gdynia Waterfront is an invited competition heralding this reinvention.
PRP’s entry creates a distinctive conference centre and hotel design
which is adjoined through a large glass central lobby. A new civic
square, cafes, restaurants and boutiques create a lively dockside setting.
The contrasting stone hues of the hotel and office block reference the
historic port city of Gdansk nearby and the ‘modernist’ architecture of
Gdynia itself. The facade design provides a sustainable solution to the
internal environment, employing passive design principles.

Set in a heavily wooded site on the Black Sea coastline, Gelendzhik
resort will be the first of its kind in Russia. The new holiday resort will
be developed solely for 18-to-25 year olds as an exclusive members
club. The resort design will be sensitive to its natural environment,
with a central new village located in clearings within the woodland.
Accommodation will be located in ‘camps’ that provide a variety
of living spaces and facilities for the young visitors to maximise their
social experiences. An old ferris wheel on the site will be brought back
to use and set alongside an outdoor area which will stage music
concerts. A cable car that crosses the site will link the resort to the
nearby beach and the mountainside behind.
