The Medellín River

The Medellín River or river Aburrá is a Colombian River which flows through the city of Medellín and its

metropolitan area. Born to 3100 meters above sea level (altitude) at the high of San Miguel, in the municipality

of Caldas, South of the Aburrá Valley, and 100 kilometers later, already with the name of Rio Porce,

pours its waters into the river Nechi.Drains the Aburrá Valley in the Central Cordillera of the

Andes and bathes ten municipalities: Caldas, La Estrella, Itagüí, Sabaneta, Envigado, Medellin, Bello, Copacabana, Girardota and Barbosa, which make up

the Metropolitan Area of the Aburrá Valley.

Pollution of the river. The first manifestations of the contamination of the Aburrá Valley were initially at 60 that are located in the more densely populated of Medellin and creeks that flow into the river without treatment. The presence of these ravines made for the community always it easy to dispose of their waste liquid and solid often.

It is produced by the San Fernando plant of the public companies from organic chemist.

Processes to purify itall the sewage from homes and industries are carried by interceptors, large pipes placed along the Medellin River, arriving to San Fernando, where they are treated by different processes until you have 80% less pollution. This is what is called a plant for secondary treatment that remove the SST and reduce the BOD.

San Fernando plant

San Fernando Plant is located in the Municipality of Itaguí in Medellin limits, being a neighbor of the Central Wholesale Food. Receives wastewater from residences, industry and trade Itaguí, Envigado, Sabaneta, La Estrella, part of the municipality of San Antonio de Prado, later also receive Caldas Township.

San Fernando plant

Projects to stop river pollutionEPM, continuing the "Sanitation Program Medellin River and its tributaries" plans to build a new plant for wastewater treatment for municipalities Bello and Medellín.The plant will be three times greater than San Fernando, but will have the same secondary treatment process. It is planned to start construction in 2010 and has a budget of 336 million dollars.San Fernando, and the other three plants to be built, one in Bello, another in Barbosa and another in Girardota, contribute to the dream that we all see the River Antioquia Medellin transparent, clean, odor-free and even aquatic life.
