1. Formalities: Presentation and Agreement of Agenda The Study Committee A1 (SCA1) meeting in 2011 was held in Beijing, China from 10th to 14th of September, and it was accompanied by one-and-a-half days Colloquium. Two technical tours were organized on September 9th and 16th to present delegates the capabilities of China about Power Generation and Electrical Machines manufacturing industry. The SC A1 meeting was chaired by the chairman, Erli Ferreira Figueiredo, BR, and it was attended by 53 members and experts from 20 countries. This number of attendees was considered excellent in view of the actual financial world crisis. The proposed agenda was accepted (see Annex 1). A coordination meeting with the participation of Chairman, Secretary and Advisory Conveners was held on 10th September, from 18:00 to 19:00hs, where some important matters were discussed. This session proved to be very helpful and it will be held for the next meetings of the Committee. Besides this, a final coordination meeting will also be programmed to discuss the main results obtained and suggest improvements. These meetings establish strategic administrative directions of the Committee, and will be held in odd and even-years.

2. Acceptance of Minutes of Meeting, Paris 2010 The final draft of the Minutes of last Meeting in Paris was accepted by the Committee. The definitive Minutes of the Meeting are included on the website: www.cigre-a1.org under the page Members area / SC Meetings Minutes.

The Webmaster presents the status of an active Working Group for “Website Redesign” leaded by Central Office. The scope of this Working Group is to redefined online presence and identity of CIGRE on the grid, to create a user friendly site, and to develop a source of information for users and members. This activity is focussed on Study Committee websites and National Committees websites as well. The Working Group had identified that it is necessary a new structure and organization of the information at the webpages, with more flexibility to create areas at the sites, simplifying the management of information.

4. Technical Committee Meeting Feedback The Chairman attended the Technical Committee on March and April 2011, and summarizes the main subjects mentioned during this meeting:

• Highlights: o Panel Session on “Recent Developments in Wind Power Generation”, with presentations of

eight top world manufacturers during Paris Session 2010. o Coordination and selection of papers for the Colloquium on “New Developments of Rotating

Electrical Machines”, to be held in Beijing, China, where 106 abstracts were received. o Total number of publications in 2010: 6, being 1 Technical Brochures, 3 Reports in Electra

and 2 Reports on SC A1 website. o Publications Plan for 2011: 5 Technical Brochures and 1 Report in Electra. o 5 Tutorials presented.

• Technical Committee Project: “The Network of the Future”: A new project launched by the Technical Committee is presented. The scope of this project is to identify a strategy and a set of activities to be undertaken by CIGRE SCs to study the expected long term future development of electric networks. Concerning SC-A1 the expected increase in renewable generation will modify the actual structure of the generation sector and the future expansion of the transmission systems, as well the manufacturing of large turbo-generators. The main characteristics of the Network in the Future will be:

o Micro grids are locally-generated power systems where power is produced, transmitted, consumed, monitored, and managed all on a local scale.

o A super grid is a large scale electricity grid network linking together a number of countries, or connecting areas with a large supply of electricity to an area or areas with a large demand.

o A smart grid is an intelligent electricity grid that connects centralized and decentralized energy sources spread all over the transmission and distribution systems to the load centres in an optimized way to both producers and consumers. Typically, small generation such as wind generators, solar panels, photovoltaic systems and gas turbines are combined with energy management to balance out the load of all the users on the system.

The contribution of the Study Committee A1 this project is identified in: o Superconducting generators development, as an alternative for increasing generation

efficiency, reducing size, weight and improving power system stability in comparison with conventional generators

o Near-future dielectrics. The utilization of polymer nano-composites is promising as near-future HV electrical insulation in rotating machines and in other applications.

o On wind generation, with development on small wind farms located nearby the centres of comsuption, reducing the number of transmission lines and decreasing looses on transmission system.

o Standardisation for new generator-grid interaction requirements and motors. It has been observed an inconsistency between generator standards and grid code requirements around the world. CIGRE, through SC A1, is compiling the grid code requirements

Page 12: Provisional Minutes of CIGRÉ SC A1 Meeting Beijing, China ...a1.cigre.org/content/download/24580/1109746/version/1/file/MoM... · Beijing, China, 2011 . 2 Table of Contents 1. Formalities:

12

worldwide, identifying extra requirements imposed by the grid codes with respect to IEC and IEEE/ANSI standards for electrical machines. The results of this survey may conduct to an optimization of the interaction generation-transmission system improving the efficiency of the overall power system

o Electrical Motors. Electric motor systems consume large amounts ofelectrical energy and can provide an opportunity for significant energy savings. Even a small improvement in efficiency could result in significant energy and operational cost savings. Investing a little more money upfront for a more efficient motor will be paid back in energy savings.

o Improvements on machine monitoring, diagnosis and prognosis, to optimize performance, reliability and efficiency and to take maintenance decisions through understanding behavior and signs of deterioration.
